  • Colin Linden – Blow Biography
Colin Linden – bLOW Biography “Got a coin in my pocket heavy and gold/It don’t own me I need to let it go/Cause having is wanting/Desire can make you weep” – “bLOW” Colin Linden’s tale is the stuff of legend, the kind told in the Coen brothers’ O Brother Where Art Thou or Inside Llewyn Davis, both of which featured his guitar playing on the soundtracks. That film would begin with an 11-year-old meeting his musical idol Howlin’ Wolf at a matinee show in his native Toronto, accompanied by his mom, who took a picture of the two during a nearly two-hour long conversation before the gig, the legendary bluesman idling over coffee and cigarettes. “I’m an old man now, and I won’t be around much longer,” Wolf told him. “It’s up to you to carry it on.” Linden still carries that frayed photograph in his wallet, along with a Sears 5/8” socket wrench in his pocket to play slide guitar. He has taken Wolf’s plea seriously, performing since he was 12 years old, leaving home as a teenager to travel the south at the invitation of Mississippi Sheiks delta blues guitarist Sam Chatmon which took him to Detroit, Chicago, Indianapolis, St. Louis, Memphis and Hollandale, Mississippi, meeting and visiting the sites of his heroes – Brownie McGhee, Muddy Waters, Sippie Wallace, Tampa Red, Blind John Davis, the Rev. Robert Wilkins, Sleepy John Estes and Son House, visiting the landmarks and juke joints, many of which he’s played in during the course of a 45-year career producing and playing blues and roots music.

  • Colin Linden
Colin Linden Colin Kendall Linden (born 16 April 1960) is a Canadian musician, songwriter and record producer. He has worked with a wide variety of artists, including Bruce Cockburn, Lucinda Williams, T-Bone Burnett, Colin James, Leon Redbone, Rita Chiarelli, Chris Thomas King, the Band, and Bob Dylan. Linden is a versatile guitarist, both on acoustic and electric guitars, specializing in slide guitar and country blues and ragtime fingerpicking. He frequently collaborates with country and folk performers. He is also a member, with Stephen Fearing and Tom Wilson, of the group Blackie and the Rodeo Kings. Early years Linden was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada When he was still an infant, his family moved to White Plains, New York. The ten-year-old Linden heard rock performers in New York venues, such as Van Morrison, the Flying Burrito Brothers, James Taylor, John Mayall, Johnny Winter and Taj Mahal 1970s When the family moved back to Toronto, Linden became interested in performers such as Taj Mahal, Mississippi Fred McDowell and Howlin' Wolf. When Howlin' Wolf played at Toronto’s Colonial Tavern, the then-11-year-old Linden spent three hours talking with the elder bluesman. A young Linden began performing at a local coffee house, the Fiddler’s Green Coffee House, singing and strumming a guitar. By 1973, Linden began learning how to finger pick. When Linden met David Wilcox, Linden decided to learn how to play slide guitar. Wilcox gave 140 blues albums to young Linden, to help Linden to learn about blues styles. Paul Mills, the producer of Sylvia Tyson’s Touch the Earth show, at the Winnipeg Folk Festival and an outlet on CBC Radio for acoustic roots music, booked Linden in 1975 .

  • Music Notes Delta State University Department of Music Fall 2006 Volume 4, Issue 1
Music Notes Delta State University Department of Music Fall 2006 Volume 4, Issue 1 Welcome to the 4th edition of the DSU Music Department Newsletter. Currently, in Northern Mississippi, we are experiencing the worst drought in six years. Even though the earth is parched, the thirst for music is great in the Delta. Our freshman theory classes have the largest enrollment in many years. Our traditional music degree programs remain strong, but we are also attracting new students for our sound recording technology degree. DSU is also pleased to welcome Tricia Walker as the new director of the Delta Music Institute. Dr. Shelley Collins, Assistant Professor of Flute, joined our department this fall, replacing Keith Pettway who retired after 26 years. She has enthusiastically tackled several different classes and is already recruiting flute students for next year. Dr. Collins, as well as any of our other studio teachers, would welcome a visit from former or prospective students. As we begin a very active year of recitals and concerts (please look at the Calendar of Events), I would like to draw special attention to Dr. Ed Bahr’s recital on October 17th. As some of you may know, this will be Dr. Bahr’s farewell recital as he will retire in May. Dr. Bahr has served our department for over 20 years and has helped to mold hundreds of students through his teaching and guidance. As always, the music faculty remains extremely productive, from chairing various committees, to performing around the country. Drs. Karen Fosheim and Mark Butler have just presented an adaptation of Prokoviev’s Peter and the Wolf to hundreds of school children in Greenville.
