    Australian National Botanic Gardens Climate Change Strategy Council2010-2015 of Heads of Australian Botanic Gardens November 2008 Australian National Botanic Gardens Climate Change Strategy 2010-2015 1. Background The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Fourth Assessment Report concluded that human induced climate change is expected to have a discernable influence on many physical and biological systems. The resilience of many ecosystems is likely to be exceeded over the course of the twenty- first century and approximately a quarter of all plant and animal species are likely to be at increased risk of extinction if increases in global average temperature continue to match current projections (IPCC 2007). Botanic gardens, in partnership with herbaria, will play an increasingly critical role in ex situ plant conservation as climate change impacts on natural populations of plant species. Made up of series of remnant bush areas often associated with the suburb-fringing hills and ridges dotted around our city, CNP contributes to the character of Canberra as the ‘bush capital’ and provides an easily accessible escape from the rigours of city living. A feature of CNP is its wonderful diversity. From forested slopes to grassy plains, CNP contains many and varied landscapes and ecological communities. CNP provides habitat for several threatened plant and animal species including two significant endangered ecological communities, Natural temperate Grassland and Yellow Box/ Red Gum Grassy Woodland.

We took an extra day to investigate some of the fascinating geology of the area, then moved on for several days of off-track walking amidst the bounteous wildflowers and elusive rock pinnacles of the Ka Ka Mundi Section of Carnarvon National Park.
