MTA’s Pandemic Federal Wish List Seeks $8B for Subway Elevators, Escalators and More By Jose Martinez THE CITY The future of the MTA’s $51.5 billion blue- print to improve the transit system has been cloud- ed by uncertainty since being put on hold last June because of the pandemic-driven economic crisis. But a new document offers a window into which capital projects are eligible for federal fund- ing — such as subway accessibility, elevator and escalator replacement and station renovations — as the MTA attempts to get some of its 2020-2024 capital program on track. The MTA is requesting more than $8 billion in financial assistance this year from the Feder- al Transit Administration, including $770 million for station accessibility upgrades, $620 million to replace elevators and escalators and $210 million for station renovations. The agency last January requested nearly $11 billion in federal funds for capital projects. He loved his game. As the article said, he smoked his pipe after each game. He was in no hurry to leave the clubhouse. “To leave the club- house was to leave baseball,” and he was in no hurry to do that. And that was every day there was a game. Older he may have been, but he was also sharp enough to remember not to sign his note. Now for Mr. Erskine, one of the great gentle- man stars of baseball. In those days, short of do- ing something unignorable like wife swapping, a player’s life was his own. Only the most dedicat- ed knew that Erskine had a severely learning-dis- abled child. While well-paid for the day, this was a time when ball players shared rides to the ball- park when playing at home, or as was the case in Brooklyn, at any of the two other major league stadiums in the city. Today, starting accountants and lawyers, or good tradesmen, make more than the Carl Er- skine made back in the day. There were no multi- multi-million-dollar contracts. In fact, today, rook- ies start out making more than a guy like Erskine did his whole career. Who and how was this child to be cared for? If Erskine had pitched after Don Drysdale came along, money might not have been an issue; but it was. And the end of his playing days, the great over-hander moved back home to Indiana. He is 94. He still cares for his son. And he’s still a gen- tleman. He wrote me a lovely note bemoaning the arthritis that had overtaken his hands and ruined in handwriting.
