Like generations of believers before you, you’re looking around at a world that seems to be coming apart at the seams and you’re wondering just how much longer it could possibly be before Jesus comes back and puts an end to such sinfulness. This seminar is my long answer to the real question(s) burning on the minds of so many Christians today - “Are we the generation that will experience the 2nd Coming of Jesus, and if so, what can we expect to happen?” Let me warn

Preface Rome and the huge Empire it built during the first centuries AD extended over vast swathes of Europe, the Near East and North Africa. This Empire has fascinated people since the days of the Enlightenment. In the wake of Rome’s military conquests, Roman culture also spread and began to influence the cultural expressions of the societies it vanquished. These developments, combined with intensive mobility and trade – especially within the Empire – ensured a flourishing exchange between cultures and peoples. When Rome’s expansion came to an end, linear frontiers known as limites were created from the 1st century AD onwards to secure the borders.

  • The Impact of Roman Imperium on the Administrative and Monetary Systems of the Provincia Asia (133 BC - AD 96)
‘Romanizing’ Asia: the impact of Roman imperium on the administrative and monetary systems of the Provincia Asia (133 BC - AD 96) by Lucia Francesca Carbone A Dissertation Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Columbia University 2016 © 2016 Lucia Francesca Carbone All rights reserved Dissertation Abstract ‘Romanizing’ Asia: the impact of Roman imperium on the administrative and monetary systems of the Provincia Asia (133 BC - AD 96) Lucia Francesca Carbone The impact of Roman power on the pre-existing administrative and economic systems of the conquered provinces has been a significant issue of scholarly debate for decades. With the studies of D. Mattingly (MATTINGLY 2011) and C. Howgego (HOWGEGO 2005), attention has shifted from the idea of Romanization as a top-down phenomenon to a much more articulated process, which could be interpreted according the model proposed by GOSDEN 2004 of ‘middle ground imperialism’, in which the element of cultural interaction between the conquering power and the conquered populations was central and led to the creation of locally hybrid cultural forms. This dissertation analyzes the ways in which local cultures and identities interacted with Roman ones in the years between Attalus III’s testament and the end of the Flavian age. I chose to focus my research on these centuries as they include four key moments for the Provincia Asia: the moment of its institution in 129/6 BC with

  • T.His Essay Is on a Relatively New Topic of Cultural History Called
chinese polymaths howard l. goodman Chinese Polymaths, 100–300 ad: The Tung-kuan, Taoist Dissent, and Technical Skills .his essay is on a relatively new topic of cultural history called T polymathy. I examine well-known scholars and writers of an early period of China with specific attention to their mixtures of skills and teachings, why and which ones, and how those skills and teachings might (or might not) have worked synergistically. To some, this may seem mysterious, since it involves, in some sense, smartness and mental goings-on as reified subjects. It can seem superficial as well, if we do not rise above merely cataloging the different things people learned, or could do. I want to avoid both mistakes as much as possible by giving solid cultural and social contexts for a time in China when skills were compounded and advanced, and by looking into certain polymaths’ lives and styles of intellectual expression. The word polymathy comes out of ancient Greek debate and criti- cism. One pre-Socratic reference, though a negative one, is Heraclitus’s criticism of other schools. The relevant passage accuses Pythagoras’ “polymathia” of being trite and overly broad (a mere concoction of oth- ers’ opinions and writings) — implying that it was a type of malpractice.1 Heraclitus valued instead learning that stemmed from “sight, hearing” and “experience,” as opposed to hearsay and writings,2 which tended I appreciate the insights and corrections offered by both Chou Min-chih (passages from Chin- shu) and David Knechtges (comments on a previous draft and leads to articles by current Chi- nese scholars).
