The History and Evolution of Clogging An Honors Thesis (HONRS 499) by Lindsay Schultz Thesis Advisor Ball State University Muncie, Indiana Presented: December 2009 Graduation: May 2010 · .::: 'I Abstract Dancing is a wonderful way for people to express themselves. There are so many styles of dance in our world today, and each ofthese dance styles had to evolve from something before it. That is how a new dance is born. Old styles of dance are changed or combined to form something new and different. In order for everyone to appreciate dance, it is important for them to be exposed to many styles of dance and learn how it evolved. This helps people understand why each dance style is special and unique. Clogging is one style of dance that is not as well known in the United States by most people in the general public. This thesis project is made to showcase this wonderful style of dance as well as educate the public about what clogging is and where it came from. I will present the findings from my research about the evolution of clogging, show a video of traditional Irish dancing (which greatly influenced clogging), as well as perform a modem clogging routine I choreographed myself. I want everyone to hear about the history as well as see what clogging looks like today in order to gain a greater appreciation for this special dance style. 2 Acknowledgments -I would like to thank Mr. Greg Lund for working with me as my advisor on this project. Year 8 Dance Project Black History Through Dance I am trying to show the world that we are all human beings and that colour is not important. What is important is the quality of our work – Alvin Ailey A range of dance styles originated through black history including the tribal dances of Africa, the slave dances of the West Indies and the American Deep South, the Harlem social dances of the 1920s and the jazz dance of Broadway musicals. These styles of dance are hugely influential, inspiring new choreography as well as supporting the story of black history. TASK 1 – Read all of the information below Africa and the West Indies The two main origins of black dance are African dance and the slave dances from the plantations of the West Indies. Tribes or ethnic groups from every African country have their own individual dances. Dance has a ceremonial and social function, celebrating and marking rites of passage, sex, the seasons, recreation and weddings. The dancer can be a teacher, commentator, spiritual medium, healer or storyteller. In the Caribbean each island has its own traditions that come from its African roots and the island’s particular colonial past – British, French, Spanish or Dutch. 18th-century black dances such as the Calenda and Chica were slave dances which drew on African traditions and rhythms. The Calenda was one of the most popular slave dances in the Caribbean. It was banned by many plantation owners who feared it would encourage social unrest and uprisings. In the Calenda men and women face each other in two lines moving towards each other than away, then towards each other again to make contact - slapping thighs and even kissing. -

K-12 Performing Arts Series Thursday, November 3, 2016 North Carolina Youth Tap Ensemble Percussive Dance Review As an integral part of the Performing Arts Series, APPlause! matinées offer a variety of performances at venues across the Appalachian State University campus that feature university-based artists as well as local, regional and world-renowned professional artists. These affordable performances offer access to a wide variety of art disciplines for K-12 students. The series also offers the opportunity for students from the Reich College of Education to view a field trip in action without having to leave campus. Among the 2016-2017 series performers, you will find those who will also be featured in the Performing Arts Series along with professional artists chosen specifically for our student audience as well as performances by campus groups. Before the performance... Familiarize your students with what it means to be a great audience member by introducing these theatre etiquette basics: • Arrive early enough to park, walk up to the Schaefer Center, find your seats and settle in before the show begins (20-30 minutes). • Remember to turn your electronic devices OFF so they do not disturb the performers or other audience members. • Remember to sit appropriately and to stay engaged in the performance so that the audience members around you can enjoy the show too. Vad är det som påverkar låtförmedlingen i de olika miljöerna? Undersökningen har sin utgångspunkt i observationer och intervjuer med representanter från en institutionell respektive icke-institutionell miljö där vi har försökt att ta reda på upplevelser av miljön, stämning, roller och prestationer. Slutsatsen av undersökningen är att de två förmedlingssituationerna är mycket lika men att intentionerna skiljer sig. I den institutionella miljön är utgångspunkten att lära sig att spela och det finns en nyttoaspekt i lärandet av låtar där syftet är att på lång sikt utvecklas inom folkmusik i stort. Inom skolan finns ett ”läxtänkande” där studenten bär ansvar för att utanför lektionerna öva på låtarna och att även där göra sin egen musikaliska tolkning av dessa. BEGINNING CLOGGING: LEVEL I Welcome to the Beginning Clogging: Level I Class. Thank you for coming. Our class will be held one hour per week for six weeks. There are eight basic steps in clogging; in this session you will learn four of those eight steps, as well as other pertinent information about clogging. The following pages of this booklet describe clogging "on paper", and will be useful in remembering the steps I teach. Also, you may want to make notes that could be helpful later on. Kelli McChesney, National Instructor Gainesville, Florida [email protected] http://www.kellimcchesney.com/ A BRIEF HISTORY OF CLOGGING Written and researched by Kelli McChesney Clogging is a folk dance similar to tap and Irish step dancing. It is making rhythmic tapping sounds with the feet. Clogging is said to have originated in the Lancashire regions of England during the Industrial Revolution. Mill workers during this time wore wooden shoes, called "clogs," to protect their feet from the harsh environment. After getting off work, the workers danced on the stone streets in small contests to see who could make the most intricate sounds. Often they tried to imitate the sounds the mill machines made. As the speed of the steps increased, the clogs proved to be dangerous and were replaced with soft leather shoes with hard soles. English copper pennies were then screwed on the heels and toes of the shoes to emphasize the sounds. Eventually, the pennies were replaced with metal "taps." With influences of many European folk dances, clogging has evolved through the years into different styles. -
