Stoops and company welcomes the Mississippi State Bulldogs to Commonwealth October 2016: Temp: 62 deg. (5 deg. above avg.) Stadium on Saturday October 22, 2016. Game time is 7:30 pm (eastern) and will be shown Precip: 2” (1/2 “ below avg.) on the SEC Network. The Dogs are a 1.5 point favorite at this time. Coach Stoops is hoping for a repeat of two weeks ago (Vandy win), as a win over 01 - 05: Showers, cool. the Bulldogs would put the Cats in a much better spot to become bowl eligible. If that 06 - 13: Isolated showers, warm. happens there are at least 2 more winnable games left on the schedule, possibly at Missou 14 - 17: Showers, mild. or Georgia & back home against Austin Peay. 18 - 24: Sunny, quite warm. Mississippi State took it on the chin again last week losing in double OT to BYU 28-21 25 - 29: T-storms, then sunny, cool. and are starting to show some chinks in their armor. So far this season they have under 30 - 31: Snowy, cold. achieved and are trailing the SEC west division. Kentucky has lost seven in a row to the Bulldogs from Mississippi State, but this year the dogs have lost three out of their last four while Kentucky has won three out of four. Kentucky stands at 3-3 overall (2-2 SEC) and Mississippi State stands at 2-4 overall (1-2 SEC). My advice, let the Cats QB, Stephen Johnson loose and this game could be the Cats turning point in achieving that illusive bowl bid. All in all, Kentucky has enough talent to defeat the Dogs in Lexington but will have to play good SEC defense to do it. I hope Coach Stoops can put on a defensive show for the fans and get the ball rolling once again. State has a different QB this season, Nick Fitzger- ald and he has shown some greatness at times, especially in his running game. He can also pass the ball and is a little elusive at times. Fitzgerald averages about a dozen rushing attempts and 70 rushing yards per game. Contain their QB and chances are the Cats will be in victory lane at the end of this game. This is the time to show Cat fans and the SEC world that Kentucky is a force to be reckoned with and as the Jefferson‟s song used to say; “We‟re moving on up, to the East Side.” Let‟s hope we can all be singing this song at the end of the game. ……………………………………. Harvest Pumpkin Soup [ 2 T unsalted butter, 1 large potato, 1 large onion, 4 1/2 C chicken broth, 1 can pure pumpkin, salt, freshly ground pepper, 1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg, 1/2 pt. heavy cream ] In a large pot over medium heat, melt butter. Add potato & onion & cook, stirring occasionally, until onion is translucent, about 8 minutes. Add chicken broth & bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat to low, and cook until potato is tender, 10 to 12 minutes. Stir in pumpkin. Using an immersion blender, purée mixture until smooth. (Or, use a blender to purée mixture in batches, then return to pot.) Stir in 1/2 tsp. salt, 1/8 tsp. pepper, & nutmeg. Increase heat to medium-high & bring mixture to a boil. Cover, reduce heat to low, & cook for 10 minutes. Stir in cream & heat thoroughly. Season with salt & pepper, if desired. Serve hot. Makes 8 servings.

Harry Potter's Pumpkin Juice [ 2 C of pumpkin-chopped up into chunks, 2 C of apple juice, 1/2 C of pineapple juice, 1 tsp. of honey (more or less to your liking), Cinnamon, Ginger, Nutmeg &/or Allspice (all ground, to taste) ] Juice the pumpkin pieces by squeezing through a cheesecloth or using a juicer if you have one. Pour the pumpkin juice, apple juice & pineapple juice into a blender. Add the honey (recommend you start with 1 tsp., as you can add some later!) to the juices & blend thoroughly. Add your spices (to taste). This might take some experimentation to get right. Chill your pumpkin juice or serve iced & enjoy!

Pumpkin Roll [ 3 large eggs-room temperature, 1 C granulated sugar, 2/3 C pumpkin puree, 1 tsp. lemon juice, 3/4 cup all-purpose flour-3 1/2 ozs., 1 tsp. baking powder, 2 tsps. ground cinnamon, 1 tsp. ground ginger, 1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg, 1/2 tsp. salt, 1 C chopped pecans-optional ] Cream Cheese Filling: [ 8 ozs. cream cheese-softened, 5 T butter-softened, 1 C confectioners' sugar plus more for sprinkling, 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract ] Heat the oven to 350* F. Grease a 10-by-15-inch jelly roll pan & line it with waxed paper. Grease & flour the waxed paper. Place a kitchen tea towel (not terry cloth) on the counter & sprinkle it liberally with powdered sugar. In a large mixing bowl with an electric mixer, lightly beat the eggs. Gradually add the sugar; beat until thick & light yellow in color. This will take about 4 to 5 minutes. Add the pumpkin & lemon juice & beat on low speed until blended. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, spices & salt. Add to egg mixture, mixing well. Spread batter into the prepared jelly roll pan. If desired, sprinkle chopped pecans over the batter. Bake in the preheated oven for about 12 to 15 minutes. The cake will spring back when touched lightly with a finger. Remove the cake from the oven & immediately turn out onto the sugared tea towel. Carefully remove the waxed paper. Starting at the 10- inch side, roll the warm cake up, towel & all. While cake is cooling in the towel, prepare the cream cheese filling. Sift the powdered sugar into a small bowl & set aside. Beat together cream cheese & butter until fluffy; gradually beat in the sifted powdered sugar & vanilla; continue beating until the mixture is smooth. Carefully unroll the cooled cake. Evenly spread the cream cheese filling over the cake. Roll the cake up -- without the towel -- & wrap it in plastic wrap. Kentucky's Abandoned Ghost Ship

Tucked away, about 25 miles downstream of Cincinnati, rests an abandoned ghost ship. She's not actually Ohio's ghost ship, rather she's really Kentucky's Abandoned Ghost Ship. She's been slowly rusting away in a small creek, just a stone‟s throw from Cincinnati. She's only accessible by hiking across a field & paddling out to see it up close. What‟s so amazing is that it's virtually hidden behind trees, driftwood, & massive reeds. But, there she is, the Celt (though over the years she's gone by many names). Lilly Rosa Bordeaux Merlot Jack The story behind this abandoned ghost ship is actually quite incredible. She first set sail back in 1902 from Wilmington, Delaware, originally as a luxury yacht, commissioned by a wealthy railroad executive, J. Rogers Maxwell. Maxwell was a passionate yachter, having won the 1907 King‟s Cup with his other ship Queen, a race off Newport against Commodore Vanderbilt. Celt was over 180 feet long & steam-powered. The Celt was sold to Manton B. Metcalf prior to WWI. According to the Daily Mail: The Celt left the hands of its first owner in 1917, when the US Navy started renting small, fast boats to outmaneuver German U-Boats to supply Great Britain during World War I. The boat was renamed the Sachem & was outfitted with depth charges to sink U-boats & machine guns to defend against torpedoes. During WWI, Celt was renamed USS Sachem, & carried Thomas Edison as a passenger while he conducted government-funded experiments in New York Harbor, when he was hard of the Naval Consulting Board. After WWI the Sachem was sold to Philadelphia banker Roland L. Taylor, & ultimately came into the possession of a Captain Jacob „Jake‟ Martin, a Brooklynite who used the ship during the Great Depression as a chartered fishing boat. Then, in 1941, the ship went back to the Navy (for a cool $65,000) & used to train soldiers learning to test sonar equipment in Key West Harbor. It was renamed the USS Phenakite. Eventually she patrolled Long Island Sound & was eventually returned to Captain Martin, after the war. After various owner-changes & several name changes, she‟s had quite the adventurous life. After having fought in two World Wars, the Sachem then ferried tourists around New York City for over 40 years (under the name Sightseer & then Circle Line V). In fact, it was Captain Martin‟s father Dave Martin, who worked as “the chief engineer for the Circle Line tour boat fleet sailing from Manhattan.” To top off an exciting life, the ship even had a cameo in Madonna‟s “Papa Don‟t Preach” music video. Eventually a Cincinnatian bought her & sailed her to the Midwest. According to Queen City Discovery the yacht was purchased by Robert Miller, a resident of Lawrenceburg, KY, in the late „80s for the rock-bottom price of $7,500. And then she was forgotten. For over 30 years. Rusting away in the Ohio River. Today you can see the ship either by paddling up the creek, or via the Ohio River. You can also see it from the road, but it‟s worth getting out of your car to experience the full gravity of its sheer abandoned awesomeness. This Week: The Lexington Home of "" ~

In 1976, Sybil; a two-part, American television miniseries starring as Sybil & as her psychia- trist, Dr. Corneilia Wilbur was aired on NBC over two nights. Based on the book Sybil by Flora Rheta Schreiber, the movie dramatizes the life of a shy young graduate student, Sybil Dorsett (in real life, Shirley Ardell Mason), suffering from dissociative identity disorder (split personality) as a result of the psycho- logical trauma she suffered as a child. With the help of her psy- chiatrist, Sybil gradually recalls the severe child abuse that led to the development of 16 different personalities. Mason spent more than a decade in therapy with Wilbur & in 1965 the two declared Mason's 16 personalities merged into one. Field's portrayal of Sybil won much critical acclaim, as well as an Emmy Award. Shirley Ardell Mason was born in 1923 & raised in Dodge City, Minnesota. As an adult, she taught art at Rio Grande College in Ohio & eventually moved to Lexington, KY to sell paintings from her home on Henry Clay Boulevard. Dr. Wilbur had moved to Lexington as well where the two remained close. After suffering from Parkinson's disease, Dr. Wilbur relied on Mason's care during her final years. Wilbur died in 1992 & left Shirley $25,000 & all of her Sybil royalties. Residents in the desirable Fairway neighborhood in Lexington had no idea that their unassuming, reclusive neighbor at 345 Henry Clay Boulevard was indeed the notorious Sybil of Hollywood fame. Shirley enjoyed gardening, painting, & taking care of her cats. She remained faithful to her Seventh Day Adventist Church which she attended near by. Built in 1942, Mason purchased the home in 1973 for $ 33,500. The 1866 sq. ft. 1.5 story Cape Cod house has 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, a year round sunroom with French doors & an unfinished basement. Today, mature landscaping surrounds the par- tially fenced yard with a private wrap around deck for outdoor entertaining. It was here that Shirley died in 1998 from breast cancer, 6 years after her initial diagnosis. Shirley was cremated & part of her estate was left to a T.V. ministry. Many of her paintings were sold at auction & her home on Henry Clay Boulevard has sold three times since her death. Mental health professionals have challenged Dr. Wilbur's diagnosis of Shirley claiming Wilbur had manipulated Mason in order to secure a book deal. At one point, Shirley admitted to a psychiatrist that her diagnosis had been embellished. In the end, through letters, Mason confirmed to a close friend that she had suffered from multiple personalities. 10 11
