The IT Computer Technical Support 1 Newsletter is complements of Pejman Kamkarian Turning Off the Windows If you simply click the Windows 8.1 Start Button, it does not produce a pop up menu. Instead you’re taken directly to the Live Tile interface. So follow a few quick tips to make the most of this feature. 1. Hover over the Start Button. 2. Right-click using a mouse, this will produce a pop- up screen. 2 | IT Computer Technical Support Newsletter 3. Hovering over Shut Down opens an additional and familiar pop-up that allows you to put your PC to sleep, shut it down, or restart it. IT Computer Technical Support Newsletter | 3 Windows Mobility Center (laptops only) Click to open Mobility Center, Device Manager, Network Connections, Task Manger, Control Panel, File Explorer and other options opens up familiar menus where you can further tweak your Windows 8.1 experience. Windows PowerShell opens a command line option. 4 | IT Computer Technical Support Newsletter Windows Mobility Center allows users to tweak a PC screen brightness, battery settings, system volume, sync settings and to manage connected displays. IT Computer Technical Support Newsletter | 5 Burn a CD or DVD in Windows 8 1. Log on to Widows 8 computer with your user account. 2. Insert a blank CD or DVD is inserted into the CD/DVD optical media drive. 3. If not in desktop mode, click Desktop tile form the Start screen to go to the desktop. 4. Once on the desktop screen, click File Explorer icon from the taskbar. 6 | IT Computer Technical Support Newsletter 5. Click Computer one the left pane. 6 5 6. On the displayed Burn a Disc box, type the appropriate title for the disc in Disc title field. 8. On the opened window, copy the desired contents from the hard disk that are to be added, and paste them to the blank CD/DVD window. 10. Once added, right-click on the white area. 11. For viewing on the computer screen A slide show is an automated presentation that shows a series of digital photos on the computer screen in sequence, possibly with background music, captions, titles, spoken narration, and video effects. Good for distributing photos to friends and family that have a computer. If you have a CD-R burner on your computer, you can copy photos and slide shows to a CD-R for easy distribution. 1. Windows XP Picture and Fax Viewer. If your computer has the Windows XP operating system, you can open any folder containing pictures, right-click on any one of the pictures, and select Open with... => Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. Click the > button to see the next picture in the folder. To see a simple slide show of all the images in that folder, click on the little movie screen icon at the bottom OR press the f11 key on the keyboard. To stop it, press the ESC key. 2. Picasa 2. An excellent free photo organizer program. Download it from picasa.com. Has a built-in full-screen slide show mode. You can also add captions to each photo. I am running Windows 7, and got my DVD's working with Neuroguide by downloading the codecs from http://www.windows7codecs.com/ I went there and found that they also offer a Windows 8 package at http://www.windows8codecs.com/ You may want to try that. -- Jim Friess Sorry to be late in posting about DVDFab. There is a free version which I find excellent. I copy all DVDs (often double density DVDs are needed), and never have difficulty. The copy only includes the movie so there is no ploughing through warnings and adverts. The copy works equally well with Neuroguide and Brainmaster DVD players. Google “DVDfab free” to find it. These are static tiles, which only provide the functionality to perform two actions by pushing the button or the icon. Be aware, that you have to edit the Windows registry and that this can potentially damage your Windows installation! So only perform the following steps, if you really know what you are doing! Requirements Windows Vista or 7 How it works The Windows Mobility Center contains system defined “Tiles” for the quick control of hard- and software, e.g. screen brightness, monitor connection. On a laptop the mobility center is opened by pressing windows-key+x. Figure 1: The Windows Mobility Center The above screen shot shows the mobility center with the additional tiles (lower row with three tiles). The buttons and icons open editors, the control panels and sound controls. These are the tiles described in this note. The following description is based on the Microsoft document: Windows Mobility Center – Extensibility Version 3.1 (2006).
