3 Physician’s Oath As I enter the practice of medicine, I solemnly pledge to give my life and talents to the service of humanity. I will practice medicine with conscience and dignity. I will not permit considerations of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, nationality, ideology or social standing to intervene between my art and my patient. The health and life of my patient will be my first consideration and I will abstain from whatever is deleterious or mischievous. I will hold in confidence all that my patient confides in me. I will give respect and gratitude to my deserving teachers and all who have helped me in my pursuit of knowledge, empathy and wisdom. My colleagues will be my brothers and sisters and, by instruction and example, we will impart a knowledge of the art to those who wish to learn it. I will maintain the utmost respect for human life and the dignity of my fellow man. I will not use my knowledge contrary to the laws of humanity and will strive to do no harm. May God grant me the wisdom and compassion to practice this art. I make this oath freely and upon my honor.

18 The History of Academic Attire The history and significance of the hooding ceremony dates to the 12th century when many European universities required gowns of their cleric students. Although gowns and hoods may have served more utilitarian purposes in the days when these scholars frequented unheated buildings, these garments, then, as now, signify intellectual achievement and status. The academic gown was first used at the University of Cambridge in 1284, and was soon followed by the University of Oxford. The custom was brought to the in colonial times by King’s College in New York, now Columbia University. In 1885, American universities and colleges standardized academic styles and developed the Intercollegiate Code for Academic Costumes. In general, the academic regalia has followed the Cambridge tradition with the characteristic elements of the gown, hood and the cap.

To assist in the identification of the academic garb worn tonight, please note the following: •• The gown is usually of black material, specifically silk for the doctorate. It has wide, round, open sleeves that are faced with panels of velvet and have three chevrons of velvet across each sleeve. •• The hood, which drapes down the back, identifies the nature and source of the degree. •• The color of the velvet edge represents the academic category of the degree, and the colors of the silk lining represent the institution. Examples of representative colors for degrees are: Arts, Letters, Humanities...... white Education...... light blue Philosophy...... dark blue Science...... golden yellow Medicine...... dark green

•• The doctor’s hood, in particular, signifies that an academic faculty has considered the recipient of such a hood to be mature in judgment, consistent in scholarship, and responsible in action. •• The cap, a soft velvet hat in European and Canadian universities, but a square mortarboard in American universities, bears a gold tassel for the doctorate.

Although the standards and dress of academic garb have been revised periodically, they have changed very little since their inception and are pretty much as you see them tonight.
