Certain statements/allegations made about Clan MacTavish will be addressed individually. Disingenuous statement 1: Thom(p)son is not MacTavish. That statement is extremely misleading. The Clans, Septs, and Regiments of the Scottish Highlands (CSRSH), 8th Edition, 1984, pp. 301, 554, Frank Adam, revised by Lord Lyon Sir Thomas Innes of Learney, states: pg. 111 Date of the 8th Edition of CSRSH is 1984, and pages 331 & 554 therein reflects that MacTavish is a clan, and that Thompson and Thomson are MacTavish septs. It does not say that ALL Thom(p)sons are of Clan MacTavish; as that would be a totally false assumption. Providing a reference footnote was the most expedient method to correct a long-held belief that MacTavish was a sept of Campbell, without reformatting the pages in this section.

    Clan MacTHOMAS Society Modern Ancient CREST: A demi-cat-a-mountain rampant guardant Proper, grasping in his dexter paw a serpent Vert, langued Gules, its tail environing the sinister paw MOTTO: Deo Juvante Invidiam Superabo, With God's help I will overcome envy SEPTS: Combie, MacOmie, MacOmish, McColm, McComas, McComb, McCombe, McCombie, McComie, McComish, Tam, Thom, Thomas, Thoms, Thomson A Short History: Thomas, a Gaelic speaking Highlander, known as Tomaidh Mor ('Great Tommy'), was a descendant of the Clan Chattan Mackintoshes, Thomas lived in the 15th century, at a time when the Clan Chattan Confederation had become large and unmanageable and so he took his kinsmen and followers across the Grampians, from Badenoch to Glenshee where they settled and flourished, being known as McComie (phonetic form of the Gaelic MacThomaidh), McColm and McComas (from MacThom and MacThomas). To the Government in Edinburgh, they were known as MacThomas and are so described in the Roll of the Clans in the Acts of the Scottish Parliament of 1587 and 1595 and MacThomas remains the official name of the Clan to this day. The early chiefs of the Clan MacThomas were seated at the Thom, on the east bank of the Shee Water opposite the Spittal of Glenshee. In about 1600, when the 4th Chief, Robert MacThomaidh of the Thom was murdered, the chiefship passed to his brother, John McComie of Finegand, about three miles down the Glen, which became the seat of the chiefs. By now, the MacThomases had acquired a lot of property in the glen and houses were well established at Kerrow and Benzian with shielings up Glen Beag.

Our Chief, Andrew MacThomas of Finegand, will be coming to the United States in May 2013. Finegand has been invited to be the Guest of Honor and Chief of the Greenville Games in Greenville, South Carolina on May 24-25, 2013. This will be the first visit from our Chief and his wife Anneke to North America in 20 years. Please put this historic event on your calendars and plan to join us as we welcome our Chief to our country. We plan to have a Branch meeting in conjunction with Andrew’s visit to these games. As this is a new development, plans for the weekend have not been developed yet, but will include events at least from Friday, May 24th to Sunday May 26th. While there will be activities in which Finegand is required to participate as the Guest of Honor of the games, there will be plenty of time for members to visit with Andrew and Anneke during the weekend. A meet and greet with our Chief will most likely be included, as well as our usual Branch Banquet and a Branch business meeting. We will sponsor a tent at the games on Saturday, May 25th will give us a “home” during the day between the other traditional games activities. We will be the Honored Clan at the games and our Branch will lead the clan parade on Friday evening.

The index to the first 28 volumes was one large index with no sub-divisions. As a great number of queries were published it was decided to include these in a section of their own from volume 29 onwards. From volume 41 the index was split into the following sections: General index; Article Titles; Contributors; Reviews; Work in Progress; Queries. A separate section for Illustrations was included in the index for volumes 45-52. NUMBERING There has not been uniformity in the numbering format used by the different compilers of the indexes. A volume covers one year during which 4 journals were issued usually in March, June, September and December. In the current index these have been harmonised to follow the most commonly used pattern: Volume number - Roman numerals capitals Journal number - Roman numerals lower case Page number - Arabic numerals Example: XXXIX.iv.116 -Volume 39, December issue, page 116. Page numbering Page numbering in the journals has not been consistent over the years.
