Daniel Goh 吴佩松

Political Experience Daniel started volunteering with the Workers’ Party of in the General Election of 2011 and joined as a member in 2013. He contributed to the Party’s grassroots work in the Paya Lebar division of Aljunied GRC (MP ) from 2011 to 2013 and in Punggol East SMC (MP ) from 2013 to 2015. He contributed to the Party’s policy research work. He is the President of the Youth Wing and Chair of the Media Team. He was one of the Workers’ Party’s candidates for the East Coast GRC in the General Election of 2015. In February 2016, he was elected as a Non- Constituency Member of Parliament in Singapore’s 13th Parliament.

Professional Career After graduating from the National University of Singapore with a First Class Honours Degree in Sociology and a Master’s Degree in Sociology, Daniel was awarded the International Institute Fellowship, Department of Sociology Teaching Fellowship and the Rackham Graduate Fellowship to pursue his doctoral study in sociology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA, from 2000 to 2005. He was also appointed Senior Tutor and was a recipient of the National University of Singapore Overseas Graduate Scholarship. On his return to the National University of Singapore in 2005, he was appointed Assistant Professor at the Department of Sociology. In 2012, he was awarded tenure and promoted to Associate Professor. He is currently the Deputy Head of the Department of Sociology and the Convener of the Cultural Studies Minor and Cultural Studies in Asia PhD Programme. His scholarship has focused on political sociology, urban sociology, cultural studies, sociology of religion, and sociology of ethnic and multicultural relations.

National Service At the end of his statutory service age of 40 as a Military Police Specialist, Daniel voluntarily extended his national service to 50 years of age and was promoted to the rank of ME4 after undergoing conversion and training.
