  • Early Mycenaean Arkadia: Space and Place(S) of an Inland and Mountainous Region
Early Mycenaean Arkadia: Space and Place(s) of an Inland and Mountainous Region Eleni Salavoura1 Abstract: The concept of space is an abstract and sometimes a conventional term, but places – where people dwell, (inter)act and gain experiences – contribute decisively to the formation of the main characteristics and the identity of its residents. Arkadia, in the heart of the Peloponnese, is a landlocked country with small valleys and basins surrounded by high mountains, which, according to the ancient literature, offered to its inhabitants a hard and laborious life. Its rough terrain made Arkadia always a less attractive area for archaeological investigation. However, due to its position in the centre of the Peloponnese, Arkadia is an inevitable passage for anyone moving along or across the peninsula. The long life of small and medium-sized agrarian communities undoubtedly owes more to their foundation at crossroads connecting the inland with the Peloponnesian coast, than to their potential for economic growth based on the resources of the land. However, sites such as Analipsis, on its east-southeastern borders, the cemetery at Palaiokastro and the ash altar on Mount Lykaion, both in the southwest part of Arkadia, indicate that the area had a Bronze Age past, and raise many new questions. In this paper, I discuss the role of Arkadia in early Mycenaean times based on settlement patterns and excavation data, and I investigate the relation of these inland communities with high-ranking central places. In other words, this is an attempt to set place(s) into space, supporting the idea that the central region of the Peloponnese was a separated, but not isolated part of it, comprising regions that are also diversified among themselves.

  • ANASTASIOS GEORGOTAS “Archaeological Tourism in Greece
UNIVERSITY OF THE PELOPONNESE ANASTASIOS GEORGOTAS (R.N. 1012201502004) DIPLOMA THESIS: “Archaeological tourism in Greece: an analysis of quantitative data, determining factors and prospects” SUPERVISING COMMITTEE: - Assoc. Prof. Nikos Zacharias - Dr. Aphrodite Kamara EXAMINATION COMMITTEE: - Assoc. Prof. Nikolaos Zacharias - Dr. Aphrodite Kamara - Dr. Nikolaos Platis ΚΑΛΑΜΑΤΑ, MARCH 2017 Abstract . For many decades now, Greece has invested a lot in tourism which can undoubtedly be considered the country’s most valuable asset and “heavy industry”. The country is gifted with a rich and diverse history, represented by a variety of cultural heritage sites which create an ideal setting for this particular type of tourism. Moreover, the variations in Greece’s landscape, cultural tradition and agricultural activity favor the development and promotion of most types of alternative types of tourism, such as agro-tourism, religious, sports and medicinal tourism. However, according to quantitative data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority, despite the large number of visitors recorded in state-run cultural heritage sites every year, the distribution pattern of visitors presents large variations per prefecture. A careful examination of this data shows that tourist flows tend to concentrate in certain prefectures, while others enjoy little to no visitor preference. The main factors behind this phenomenon include the number and importance of cultural heritage sites and the state of local and national infrastructure, which determines the accessibility of sites. An effective analysis of these deficiencies is vital in order to determine solutions in order to encourage the flow of visitors to the more “neglected” areas. The present thesis attempts an in-depth analysis of cultural tourism in Greece and the factors affecting it.

The 2018 Report is extremely important to us, as 2018 signals the operational completion of our project, and during this year: A) Both the construction and the full operation of the Ionia Odos motorway have been completed, a project linking 2 Regions, 4 prefectures and 10 Municipalities, giving a boost to development not only in Western Greece and Epirus, but in the whole country, B) Significant infrastructure upgrade projects have also been designed, implemented and completed at the A.TH.E Motorway section from Metamorphosis in Attica to Scarfia, a section we operate, maintain and manage. During the first year of the full operation of the motorways - with 500 employees in management and operation, with more than 350 kilometres of modern, safe motorways in 7 prefectures of our country with a multitude of local communities - we incorporated in our daily operations actions, activities and programs we had designed, aiming at supporting and implementing the key strategic and development pillars of our company for the upcoming years.

However, a key part of the National Energy and Climate Plan is to gradually phase out the use of lignite, which includes the decommissioning of all existing lignite units by 2023, except the Ptolemaida V unit, which will be closed by 2028. This plan makes Greece a frontrunner among countries who intensively use lignite in energy production. In this context, this paper investigates the environmental, economic, and social state of Megalopolis and the related perspectives with regard to the energy transition, through the elaboration of a SWOT analysis, highlighting the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of the municipality of Megalopolis and the regional unit of Arcadia.

Its contribution to the historiography of the period stems from the fact that it constitutes the first academic study of the third largest resistance organisation in Greece, the 5/42 regiment of evzones. The study of this national resistance organisation can thus extend our knowledge of the Greek resistance effort, the political relations between the main resistance groups, the conditions that led to the civil war and the domestic relevance of British policies.

GIANNOULIS, IMANTOSIS Documentation, Greece Abstract: The following paper refers to the Large-Scale Documentation of Cultural Her- itage in extreme regional and environmental conditions, with the use of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). Three large scale survey sites in Greece are presented, all located in Southern Greece at the Peloponnese region. Case studies are: The Old Philosopher’s Monastery, the Penteskoufi Fortress, and the Acrocorinth Castle. The paper focuses on the encountering difficulties on site, the methodology and techniques used for surveying, the workflow followed during documentation and the deliverables of each study. For each case study, detailed documentation of the difficulties faced on site due to inaccessibility takes place. The most common problems for the working team where: extremely bad or quickly changing weather conditions, dense vegetation that covered the surveying sites, frequent rock falling, lack of power charging spots near the site and the inability of trans- porting heavy equipment. Additionally, the combination of methods applied to overcome every challenge is elaborately presented. The sites were surveyed with the use of Un- manned Aerial Systems supported with high accuracy geodetic equipment. Stereoscopic Photography took place not only in vertical and horizontal position, but in diagonal also, in order to capture detailed aspect and all the ground folds. Finally, using 3D Photogram- metry, billion numbered Point Clouds, Digital Surface Models (DSM), Digital Elevation Models (DEM), 2D Cad Blueprint visualizations and Orthophotomosaics were generated. CHONDROPOULOS ABSTRACT: The systematic status and the geographical distribution of the 30 snake taxa occurring in Greece are presented. Compared to lizards, the Greek snakes show a rather reduced tendency to form subspecies; from the total of 21 species listed, only 5 are represented by more than one subspecies. No endemic species has been recorded, though at the subspecific level 8 endemisms are known in the Aegean area. Many new locality records are provided. KEYWORDS: Ophidia, Checklist, Greece INTRODUCTION The Greek snake fauna consists of 21 species belonging to 4 families: Typh- lopidae (1 species), Boidae (1 species), Colubridae (14 species) and Viperidae (5 species). Sixteen species are either monotypic or each one is represented in Greece by only one subspecies while the remaining rest is divided into a sum of 14 subspecies.
