Ifyouonlyreadonethinginthisissueofthe“OilyRag”makesure itisthechairman’sreport.Thislaysoutthesituationwithregardsto ourtenancyattheCreechsitewhichcouldhaveaseriouseffecton theclubasawhole.Relationswithparishcouncilscanbedifficult. Themembershipofthesecouncilschangesfrequently,theirviews evenmoresoandthereisnorequiremen tforcouncillorstohaveany administrativeorbusinessexperiencetohelpthemmakerational decisions.Asaresulttheactionsofparishcouncilsareoften perverseanddifficultforthoseoutsidetounderstand.Miniature railwaysaregenerallyviewedasassetsbytheirlandlords.Soitis rathersadthattheparishcouncilconsiderashortterm“charity shop”leaseastherightwaytocontrolourtenancy.Toaddtothis theParishCouncilhavetriedtoforceustosignthisinappropriate documentbyusi ngthreats.MaybePerecRachmanisaliveandwell andlivinginCreechSt.Michael! Thevillageneedsimprovedleisurefacilit iestocopewiththerapidly increasinglocalpopulation.Moneyisavailablefromtheextensive residentialdevelopmentinthearea.Therecreationparkcould becomeasportsandleisurecentreanyparishwouldbeproudof. IamcombiningmynoteswiththeregularCreechreportthistimeas theyaresolelyaboutthesituationwehavereachedintryin gtoagree arevisedtenancyagreement. Memberswillrecallthatwehavebeenindiscussionswiththe ParishCouncil(PC)forsome3yearssincetheydecidedtotake directcontroloftherecreationfieldinsteadofthrougha managementcommitteeashitherto.Intheprocesstheyindicated thatourprevioustenancyagreementsignedin2003withthis managementcommitteeneededtoberevisedtoreflectthechanged circumstancesasitwasconsiderednolongervalid.Ourdiscussions thereforehavebeenbasedonupdatingtheoriginalagreementtaking intoaccountthetermsandconditionsitcontainedwhichwe continuedtohonourbymain tainingtherentpaymentsoverthe timescalethathaselapsed.Ourviewwasalsothataslandlordthe PCshouldcontinuetohonourthesetermstoreflectourpositionas sittingtenants. Overseveralmeetingsajointworkingpartyof3ParishCouncillors and2TMEmembersmettodiscussandhadagreedthechanges neededbythesecondhalfof2013.Thisfollowedonushaving receivedaformalstatementfromthePCinMaythatouroriginal tenancyagreementhadnovalidityastheirmanagementcommittee didnothaveauthoritytosub-letanylandunderthetermsofthe TrustDeedunderwhichtheyoperated.TheDeeditselfhadals o expiredandnotbeenrenewed.Thiseffectivelynullifiedthetermsof ouroriginalagreementandtheprovisionforprogressivetenancy renewalsforupto20years. 4 AlthoughthePCwerestillraisinginvoicesfortherenttwiceyearly! ItalsoconflictedwithTMEasthetenanthavingbeeninvitedbythe PCtobejointapplicantsforthedesignationofthefieldasa‘Field inTrust’undertheprotectionoftheNationalPlayingFields Association.Thiswasapprovedlastyearandisnowformally recordedattheLandRegistry. Thelastjointworkingpartymeetinginlate2013confirmedthatwe wereinagreementonthebasisforarevisedtenancyagreement whichthePCwo uldputtotheirsolicitorstoproduceaformallegal documentthatboththePCandTMECommitteememberscould approveandsign .Atthatstageitwasexpectedthatthistenancy agreementwouldbelaidoutinaformatsimilartotheoriginal agreementon4pagesofpaper. Thedocumentthatactuallyarrivedturnedouttobe14pagesofa formalleaseplus3pagesofadocumentthat requiredTMEto relinquish‘securityoftenure’ofthesitebeyondthe5yeartermof thelease.AtthispointyourCommitteedecidedthatlegaladvice wasneededbeforeproceedingfurther. FollowingdiscussionwithafriendlysolicitorTMEsentaforma l lettertothePCaskingforanexplanationoftheirchangein approachandinparticularwhytheynowconsideredaformalleas e wasrequiredinplaceofasimpletenancyagreementorlicencesuch asweenjoyforVivaryPark.Theresponseon2Junewasth atthe PCwishedamoreformaldocumentwithspecificlimitationsto preservetheirrightto‘regaincontrolofthewholefield’shoulditbe desiredatsomestage.

HoweverthefollowingdayanemailwasreceivedfromthePC demandingthatTMEsignthele asewithin2weeksorelse! Followinganemergencycommitteemeetingthenextdayand furtherdiscussionwiththesolicitorTME haveformallyrejectedthe PC’sultimatumon2counts –

5 TheleasewasincorrectinreferringtoTMEasbeingcharity; TheactionproposeddidnotcomplywiththePC’sownrecorded minuteofJune2013thatthedraftleasebejointlyagreedbetween theirandTMEsolicitorsbeforesignature.

WealsoaskedthatthePCinstructtheirsolicitorstosendaformal copyoftheleasetothesolicitorwehavenowformallyaskedtoact onTME’ sbehalffortheoutstandingconsultationtotakeplace.A briefingmeetingwithoursolicitortakesplaceon30Junetocover theaspectswherewethinkchangesareneeded.

Inviewoftheactionwearenowtaking,yourCommitteehashadto sanctionpaym entoflegalfeesuptoaspecifiedamountbut, dependingontheprogressmade,itmaybethatwehavetocallan EGMofTMEif thesecostsescalate.WeintendtocallanEGMin anyeventforTMEmembershipinduecoursetoapprovethefinally agreedterm softheleasebeforecommittingTMEtotheinitial5 yeartermweexpectwillapply.

It’sbeenmixedfortunessofar,withtheweathereithersowetthat runningwasnotpossibleorglorioussunshinebringinginbig crowds. Sadly,EasterSundaywasawashout.Usuallytherearelongqueues allafternoonasVivaryParkhoststheirannualEa sterEggHunt,It wasverydisappointingforboththeorganisersandforTMEbutthe goodnewsisthattheyarehopingtostage thehuntduringthe summer –weatherpermitting! 6 On1stJune,goodweatherprevailedandseveralmembersbrought theirlocos,whichbothsharedtheloadforthedriversandgave the childrenalovelychoiceofwhichtraintochoose. Allwecandoistohopethattheweatheriskindtousandshines every1stand3rdSundayuntiltheendofOctober. 7 TheThe engine’s first rally

Afterelevenyearsofleisuretime,theMcLarenisfinallycomplete andevenpainted.IdecidedtopainttheengineinFirstWorldWar liveryastheoriginalwasorderedbytheWarOfficeforservicein thatconflicttoaccompanyseveralotherMcLarenengi neswhich werebeingusedtohaul8and9inchhowitzers,althoughthis particularexampleneveractuallywentintoservice,notbeing completeduntil1919.Thiscolourschemeseemedparticularly appropriategiventhatthisyearisthecentenaryoftheoutbreak.

(That’smystoryandI’mstickingtoit!Nothingtodowithmy dislikeofliningoutenginesandlookingforexcusesnot todoso.) Anyway,Iwasgenerouslygivenatinofcorrectcolourpaintbya well -knownmemberwhoshallbenamelesssavethat hehasseveral FirstWarlorries.Thepaintingproceededwithoutundueproblems, thenIcametothequestionofhowwasItopai nttheWDandthe arrowtypicalofsuchlivery?AfterconsiderablethoughtIdrew 8themonthecomputer,printedthem, cutroundthemwithascalpelandstuckthis“stencil”totheengine withpvaglue.Whendryitwasasimplemattertopaintoverthem withwhiteHumbrolandsubsequentlypeeloffthepaper. Ihadpreviouslyhadanhydraulictestcarriedoutsoallthat remainedwasthesteamtest.Thiswasperformedandtheengine wasdeclaredfitforuse.Withthedateofthefirstrallyrapidly approachingIheldmybreathastowhethertheinsurancewould comethroughintime,asmemberswillbeawaretouseatractio n engineinapublicplaceRoadTrafficActcompliantinsuranceis requiredbylaw.Thedocumentationtogetherwiththerequisit e NTETdiscdulyturnedupsowesetofffortheAbbeyHillSteam Rallyin. AlthoughIhadsteamedtheengineseveralti mesIhadnever actuallydrivenitsoitwaswithsometrepidationIengagedagear andsetoff.Itisremarkablewhataturnofspeedthisenginehas,top gear(ofthree)canbealarminglyfastsoIspentmostoftheweekend usingsecondgear. Onthefir stmorningIwasapproachedbyachapwhosaidtome“I havebuilta3inchscalemodelofan8-inchhowitzer,itlooksthe partbutdoesnotfire.Wouldyouliketohitchituptoyourengine andseewhatitlookslike?”(Seepicturesofthetwomodel s.)He saidhethoughthispaintdidnotlookasauthenticasminesoItold himthestoryoftheoldlorries,hewasmostimpre ssedandasked forthemanufacturerandnameofthepaint,Iwasabletoenlighten him,followingconsultation. Weeventuallyputthetwoitemstogetherandwhataninterestthis generated!Photographicenthusiastsappearedfromalloverthe placeandwe hadquiteacrowdaround.Thebuilderofthegun intendstocreateanammunitionboxonthelimberandsitonthisto drivehis tractionenginewhenhehasfinishedbuildingit.Ilook forwardtoseeinghimanditagaininthefuture.

Atarecentcommitteemeetingitwasdecidedtoaskthemembersif theywereinfavourofaddinganextrarailtogiveusa2.5"gauge trackatVivaryPark.Thefortunesof2.5"gaugehavechanged wildlyoverthelast70years.Afterthelastwar2.5"gaug ewasstill thegaugeofchoiceofmostminiaturelocomotivebuilders,but greateraffluenceresultedinasteadymigrationtolargerscales.By the1970'sitlookedasthoughthegaugecouldgothesamewayas gauge2andbecomevirtuallyextinct.Nowlar gelyduetothe activitiesofthe"National2.5"GaugeAssociation"thenumberof modelengineersbuildingandrunninglocomotiv esinthisgaugeis steadilyincreasing.AddingtheextralinewouldgivetheTME membersbuilding2.5"gaugeenginessomewhere torunandwould almostcertainlyattractnewmemberswithaninterestinthegauge. Acommonobjectionto2.5" gaugeisthat itisnotseenas suitableforpassengerhauling. Indeedsomedoubta2.5” gaugeenginecouldhaulalive loadatall.Inpract ice,allbut thesmallest2.5"gauge engineswillhaultheirdrivers andatapinch,largermodels PhotoG.Chandler couldevenbeconsideredfor haulingthepublic 10 SteveEaton’sKURGarratt Smallsimplelocossuchas "Toby"areidealforbeginners andmoreexperiencedbuilders whowantsomethingtheycan buildquickly.Attheotherend ofthescalehugeprototypes resultinmodelswhicharefar moreeasytohandlethanthey wouldbeinlarger scales. Itisimpossibletopredictthe amountofusethenewtrack PhotoG.Chandler wouldget.Buttheredoesseem tobemoreinterestnowin PaulWootondrivinghisToby smallergaugesthanwasthe caseafewyearsago.Onlyin thisgaugecanyoutakealocomotivetoarallyonaSaturdayand enjoydrivingitaroundaraisedtrack,thenvisitafriendonthe Sundaywithagauge3layoutandusethesameenginetohaul a scaletrainonascenicrailway.Onarrivinghome,youcanthen placeitonapieceofdisplaytrackonyourbookcase,rather thanit becomingsomethingtotripoverinthegarage. Thecostoftheproject wouldbekeptdownby usinglightersection steelforthenewrail. Butclearlytherewillbe workrequired. ManyTMEmemberswillbynowhavevisitedtherailwayinIsle Abbots,andasthean nualclubgatheringisnowrapidly approaching,youreditorhasofferedmetheopportunitytosayabit moreabouthowtherailw aycameabout. In1980wemovedfromourVictorian“Semi”nearDorkingtoIsle Abbotshereinrural.Inthosedaysth erewasahugeprice differencebetweenhousesinLondon’scommuterbeltandthe countryside,sowewereluckytopurchaseasto nefarmhouseanda five-acrefield,whicheventhenImentallyearmarkedforafuture railway. Sometwentyyearsof runningabusinessand family -rearingthen ensued,althoughI clungontothedream ofbuildingmyown railway,spurredonby visitstoPau land SylviaMash’s Chaldonlightrailway inSurrey,Bob Washington’snow closedrailwayat Eckington, PhotoM.Rickitt Gloucestershire,and ofcourse,Pecoramaat IsleAbbotscentralstation. nearbyBeer.

12 Twoeventswerethefinalcatalystforcommencingconstructionof theIsleAbbotsRailway.First,Imanagedtodisposeofmybusiness inSeptember2000,andtheninMay2001ourfirstgrandson,Max, arrived.Ratherrashly,Ipromisedthatenoughofthera ilwaywould beopentogiveridesatMax’sfirstbirthdayparty. Ijoinedthe7¼”GaugeSocietyandplacedanadvertisementintheir magazineappealingforinformationonrailwaybuildingandsome basicequipment.Ialsowroteforallthetradepricelist sthenon offer.Oneoftherespondentstomyadvertisementwastheever - helpfulTonyGosling.HeinvitedmetoaTauntonModel Engineers openeveningathishouseinShute.Tonyhassincebeenthesource ofmuchhelpandencouragement,andhasalsohelped melocate someoftherollingstocknowresidentontheline. Imadetwodecisionsquiteearlyon.Firstly,Iwantedtogivea slong arideasthelandavailableallowed,andinordertokeepeverything feelingas“big”as possible,Iwouldadopta “narr owgauge”standard. Luckilythefieldadjoining ourhouseisfairlyflat,and Ieventuallyproduceda six -stageconstructionpla n. Thisgaveacircuitof aroundhalfamilewithan additional“panhandle” loopthroughadense plantationofashtrees Atrainleavingthe“panhandle” closetotheengineshed thatIhadplantedsome20 yearsearlier.Thiswasdesignedasaturningcirclebutisalsonow oftenincorporatedintothecompleterunningcircuit. IsleAbbotsCentralstation,closetothehouse,hasthreeplatforms,

13 nominallyoneineachdirection,withabi-directionaltrackinthe centre,althoughforTMErunningdaysallthreeplatformsar e normallyusedinthesamedirection.Platformonehasdirectaccess totheengineshedanddepotfan,solocosinneedofserv icingcan bedirectedoutofservicedownthisroad.Atthepointinthecircuit mostdistantfromthestationthereisaveryw idepassingloopwitha circleenclosedwithinit,inwhatisknownasGreatWood(planted bymein1982); thisoffersthechoiceofreturningbacktoIsleAbbotsCentralinthe oppositedirectionratherthandoingacompletecircuit.Thereisan additionalpassingloopatOakTreeHalt –thisisasummerhouse thataneighbourwasabouttoconsigntothebonfireandwas quicklyre scued!Ourmaximumgradientis1in50andthecurves areusually60ftdowntoaminimumof30ftradius. In2001CromarWhite wereswitchingtosupplyingplasticsleepers, andIwasgivenanattractivepricetoclearalltheirexistingstockof hardwoodsleepers,togetherwith32mmhighaluminiumrail,for stages1-3ofmyplan.Theyalsorolledsomeoftherailto30ft radius. Havingdecidedonabasictracklayout,Isetaboutclearinganarea ofbarntomakean18ftlongbenchonwhichtoconstructmy 15ft trackpanels.Iusedtemplateswithslotstodropinsleepers,whichI creosoted(ugh!)andpre -drilledtotaketrackscre ws.Aftersome earlierexperiments,trackscrewshavebeenstandardisedon32mm roofingsheet -to -timberscrewsfromScrewfix,wh ichareproving verysatisfactory.Ihavetwotracktemplates,onestraight,andone tomakeupa30ftradiuscurve.Inmyearly attemptsattracklaying, alllinewaseitherstraight,ortoa30ftradiuscurve,abitlike HornbyDublo.Laterexperiencehasshownthatbycombining straightandpre -rolled30and60ftradiirails,anyradiuscurve, togetherwithquitenicetransitionscanbemadeup.Morecomplex itemslikepointsandcrossovershavebeenfabricatedwiththehelp ofanoldfriend,RichardPes kett,whohasthenecessaryworkshop 14 facilitiesincludingthemillingmachinenecessarytoproducepoint blades. Mynextpurchasewashousingforthefuturerollingstock.Luckily theexistingwallofaredundantmilkingparlourwasavailableas onesideofalean -tostructure,soa40ftlongshedwideenoughto accommodatethreetrackswasorderedfromForestersGarden Buildings,HatchBeauchamp.Istillhavevividmemoriesoftrying toerectthisintheteethofagaleinJanuary2002.

AlthoughIhadreadupalltheliteratureIcouldfindontrack construction,muchstilldependsonindividualconditions,andin particularthecompositionofthelandonwhichthetrackrests.Most ofmyrailwaywastobeonfairlywell -drainedmeadow,whichhad notbeenploughedforover30years,sodiggin gtoodeeplydidnot reallymakesense,especiallyasthespoilremovedhadtobe replacedwithexpensiveballast.Otherpartsoftheroutehadtobe clearedofaforestofbrambles,andabridgewasconstructedovera stormoverflowbehindapond.

15 Amotorwayengineerwholivesnearbyshowedmehowtosurvey levelsontheproposedroute,banginginpegsat5-metreintervals andusingalaserleveltoproduceagradeprofile.Byusingan exaggeratedverticalscale,Imanagedtofrightenmyselfby producingagradientprofileresemblingtheDarjeelingHimalayan Railwayratherthanmyrelativelyflatfield! Havingre -checkedmymeasurements,Isetaboutpreparingthe track -bed.Manymemberswillbefamiliarwithgeotextile,more usuallyknownasTer ram,whichisavailablein14mx1mrolls. Witha10cmmargineachside,thisgivesaconvenientballastwidth of80cm.Havingmowedthemeadowasshortaspossible,Imarked outthetrackbedwithspray -markerroadpaintandhiredaturf - cuttertoremove varyingdepthsofturfwithaminimumof3”.I tradedtheturfthusproducedforpavingslabswithaneighbourwho wasre -design inghergarden.Theslabsnowformstationplatforms.

The geotextilewaslaidintheresultanttrenchandthiswasthenfilled with20mmMendiplimestonechippingsandcompactedwithan industrialcompactorplate.Eventuallywegotthroughsome180 tonsofballast.Initiallytheballastwasnotedged,butthiswasa majorerror,asgrassandweedsquicklyinvadedfromthesi des. Whenanattemptwasmadetorectifythisbystrimmingtheedges, notonlythevegetation,butalsotheballast,wasflunginall directions!ThiswasremediedbyinsertingTanalised100x10mm edgingboards,aprocessachievedfarmoreeasilyduring constructionthanafterwards,andatechniqueadoptedfor subsequentphases.Layingthetrackpanelsandballastingprovedto betheeasybit,andtherailwayopenedinstages,withMichael PritchardfromPecoramakindlyperformingaformalopeningforus on20thJuly2004.

InspiredbyPaul&SylviaMash’sChaldonLightrailway,Iinitially hadplanstoinstallasignalbox,togetherwithpoweroperated points. 16 Subsequentexperiencehasshownthatsprungpoints,togetherwith manualpointleversoperatedfromthelocomotive,areafarmo re practicaloptionforthetypeofminimally -staffedoperationmy railwayusuallysees.Mostoftheleversaresetabout12ftbackfrom thepoints,andIhaveaddedarouteindicatorbytheblade mechanismsotheroutesetcanbeseenbydriverssomeway before thepointsarereached.

IsleAbbotsisasmallandfriendlyvillage,andmanyoftheresidents havehelpedwiththeirvariousskills;surveying,electrical knowledge,loanofvariousequipment,etc.Inreturn,severalvillage fund-raisingeffortshavebenefitedfinanciallyfromrailwayopen days.Onedownsideoftheseeventshasbeenthepressureonour owndomesticfacilit iesatIsleAbbotsStationHouse(wecarried over400passengersonagardensopenday).

Turningalocoatthevillagehallstation

Tohelpresolvethis,withthepermiss ionofthefarmeronwhose landitruns,abranchlinewasconstructedtothebackofIsleAbbots VillageHall,whichhasitsowntoiletandrefreshmentfacilities.

17 ThisnewlineinvolvedbranchingofftheturningcircleinGreat Wood,adiamondcrossingovertheexistingcircuit,theconstru ction ofa15ftbridgeoverastream,400feetofadditionaltrackandanew 3-platformstationattherearofthevillagehall. Weinstalleda second-hand10ftturntablefromPecorama(renderedsurplusby theirnew12ftinstallation)attheendoftheVil lageHallstation.Use oftheVillageHallbranchbymorethanonetrainmadesignalling verydesirable,asthissectionoftrac kisbidirectionalandsowe nowhaveasmallautomaticcolourlightsignalsystemtocontrolthis partofthesystem. Forabitofaddedinterest totheline,wearein processofcompletinga 40fttunnel –overground ofcourse;inIsleAbbots anunderg roundtunnel wouldbefullofwaterfor mostofthewinter!The tunnelhasbeenmade frompalletsandislined withblackgeotex tileto maximisethegloomand Thenewtunnelunderconstruction terroriseouryounger passengers!Ultra -violet lightsandskeletonsaddtotheeffectatHallowee n!

Lastyearwebuiltanew2 -road40ftengine/carriageshed.This currentlyhousesanexHiltonValleyListerdiesel -electric together withitstwocoveredcarriages,whichiscurrentlyonloanand lookingforanewhome.Whilstitisanimpressivebeast ,itisreally outofproportiontotherestofthesystemandtheoccasional derailmentpresentsamajorchallenge!

WellImustsaythatIhavebeenlookingforwardtothistripto SwanseafromtheveryfirstreadofBillse-mail.Ihavenothad muchsuccessingettingdrivingtimeinovertheyearandtherefore formeitwasmythirdreasontolookingforwardtotheday.Myfirst reasonwasachangetomeetagainthatgroupofwelcomingcheerful membersofSwanseaclub.ThesecondwasbecauseI knewthistime howgreattheircompanyandhelpfulnesswouldbe.Andthethird wasasecondgoontheirgreattrackwithallit stwistsandturns, tunnelsandhills. IwashopingtotakemyRoyalScot,buttheideaoftowingatrailer allthewaytoSwan seawasnottoopleasingandmyPollywasinthe repairshopaftermytakingafewmonthstopullitapartandrefitit. onlyfo rmetotripoverournew walkingdog.(foryearsourpetPug hasnotbeenabletowalkduetothe actionsofitsfirstownersusinghim asafootball)Thenewdogcanwalk andIwasjustnotusedtothatidea. Bythistimeothermembers ofTauntonhadstartedtoturnup,along withtwomembersfromYeovilclub.Welltheweatherimproveda bitandtakingfulladvantageIwasfirstoutontothetrack.Wellit wasjustasgreatasIremember.Withthetrackdroppingdownfrom thestationin toalefthandbend.Thenintothefirsttunnel,backout intodaylightandtheslowclimbtothenextbend.Morebendsanda furthertunnelandIfoundmyselfbackatthesmallstationImust sayatthispointthingswentabitwrong.TheMaidofKenthas slidingdoorstothefireboxandabitofcoalhadbecomestuckunder oneofthedoorsandIcouldnotopenitonthemove. 21 Thelossofsteampressuresoonslowedthelocotostop.ThereIwas busyclearingoutthefireboxdoorsandhopingthatnoone had noticedmymishap.IfoundthattheMoKfiredupalotmore willinglythanthePolly,evenifitusedalotmorecoalonceonthe move.Maybearound40percentmoreinfact,Ihadalotlesscoalat theendofthedaythanIrememberedfromlastyear.Withafurther fewlapsundermybeltandwithwaterinthetendergettingvery low,itwasalltosoontowithdrawandallowso meothersontothe track.Fromthewarmcheeryatmosphereoftheclubhousecomplete withawelcomepotbellystoveandlotsof baconrollsanddrinksof alltypes,cakesandhomemadebiscuits. IwatchedasBarrytookBob’slocoout forarun,sadtosa yitwasarepeatof lastyearsperformanceandalldidnot gowell.Lackofsteampressureforced BarryoffthetracksoonerthenIthink hewouldofwished.Ican’tremember seeingBilloutonthetrack,butthanks Billforarranging,yetagain,agreat day’soutingfortheclub.John Pickeringwasseenenjoyinghimself andIthinkIamcorrectinsayingthat Johnwasthelastoffthetrack.Mike fromYeovilwasmorethehappyto showthepowerofhis5inchgauge Kinglocomotive,afinelookingengine “Salome”handleswell thatIhaveseeninactionafewtimes. OneoftheissuesatCreechisthatwehavenomeansoflifting heavyitems,andtheproblemwith71/4ingaugeisthateverything isheavy.Thecarriageshedwasoriginallybuiltverysubstantially withtwoheavyconcretepiersinthecentre –justright forabeam acrossthewidthofthebuilding,andmostfortunately,asuitable steelbeamrecentlyappearedinthescrappileof alocalengineering company.ThiswascuttotheexactlengthandbroughttoCreech.A suitablerecesswascutineachsideofthebuildingtoaccommodate thebeamends,andthenitwasontothetrickysubjectofhowto raisethissteel,weighing3cwt,intoplace.

TheThursdaygangspentsometimetalkingaboutthis,(the Thursdaygangseemtospendalotoftimetalkingabout everything!)andtheprosandconsofwhichwasthebestwayof doingthejob.

23 Itwouldbeeasierwithalargegroupofhelpersofcourse,buteven thentheliftwouldbewellaboveheadheightandratherri sky. Intheend,asusualforsuch things,theactualworktook alotlesstimethanwehad spentmusingoverit.The beamwas liftedbitbybit, oneendatatime,making useofthebenches,a cupboard,andpartsofa scaffoldtower,before slidingthe raisedbeam Almostthere effortlesslyintoplaceinthe recesses. Theoperationtookjustover40minutes.Thebeamisnowconcreted intoplaceandiscapableoftakingapointloadatitscentreoftwo tonswithaconsiderablesafetyfactor,andthisshouldbeample for anythingweneedtoliftatCreech!

NaturallyIwasdevastatedatlosingsuchagoodjob,OYeah!! TherewasonethingIhadomittedtosay,thatIhadmetupwithan oldgirlfriendandthatwaswhyIdecidedtohaveaspellashore. Thiswasfinetostartwithbutafterawhileshegottobeabit “clingy”andwantedustogetsomewheretolivetogether,inreality shewashavingtroubleathomeandwantedoutandI happenedto behandy.FortunatelyformeIhadatelegramtojointheParaguay StarsoIwasoffthehook. 24 Isignedonasamaingreaserandwesailedonthe3rdMay.This shipwasasistershiptotheUruguayStar(myfirstship)soI knew thelayoutoftheengineroom,Iwasonthe12-4watch.Alsothe greasershadtolookafterthedonkeyboileraswellasthegenerators wheninport.

ItwasearlyeveningwhenwegottoLasPalmastotakeonfueloil andweweretostayovernightan dsailinthemorning.Justbefore midnightIwentdownbelowtorelievethe8-12manandIhadjust finishedcheckingroundwhenthe2ndengineercamedownandsaid tomewouldIratherbegoingashore?Ithoughtwhatastrangething tosay,butIsaidye s.Offyougothenhesaid,meandthe3rdhavea jobtodosowecanwatchtheboilerforyou.Ididn’tneedtelling twicesoI wasoffbeforehecouldchangehismind.

WesetoffinthemorningontheeightdayjaunttoRio.WhenI wentonwatchmidday the8-12mansaidwhathappenedtoyoulast night?SoItoldhim,allhesaidwas,Ithoughtthat2ndisastrange oneandwele ftitatthat.Afteranuneventfultripwegottotheriver plateandtiedupattheNewPortdockmoreorlessinthecentreof BuenosAriesthiswasforthepassengersandbaggagetobe unloaded.Atleastitwasquiet,notlikeayearorsoagowhenwe almostbecameacasualtyoftherevolution.

JustbeforeweleftforSouthDockthecustomssearcherscame aboardbutasusualtheyopenedafewcupboardsandliftedafew mattressesthendisappeared.Itwasawellknownfactthatthe shippingagentpaidthemtoputtheir“blindfolds”on.

Nextmorningwiththeboilersshutdownthecleaningandscaling begun,thistimeImissedallthatasIkepttoseawatchestotendthe donkeyboiler,generatorsandanypumpsstillrunning.Atabout 12.30allthehands werestillatlunch.

Iheardalotofshoutingupabove(thedonkeyboilerwasdownin 25 thelowerlevel)soIwentuptoseewhatwasgoingon.Thiswasa propercustoms“rumblesquad”.Tenmeninoverallswithcrowb ars, mirrorsonpolesandtorchesalsotwoarmeddock,tomethey lookedserioussobeingnoheroIsuddenlyhadtocheck thewater levelintheboiler.

InOilyRagno.107ImentionedthelargefunnelsontheBlueStar ships,thisonebeingasist ershiptotheUruguayStaralsohadan emergencyfeedwatertankinthefunneljustthesameholdingsix tonsofwater.

Whathappenedwasthis,oneofthecustomsmenwalkingpastthe tankcaughtitaglancingblowwithhisbaranditsoundedhollowa secondblowsoundedthesame,nexthecheckedthesightglassand itwasfullofwater,thenonopeningthedraincockwaterran out andtheglassremainedempty,sohecalledtheboss -manandoneof theguards.Thechiefengineerwascalleddownaswellandthe inspectiondoorwasunbolted.Thetankwascrammedfullwith casesofcigarettes.Thatwasthejobthe2ndand3rdengineershad todoinLasPalmas.

Theoutcomewastheywerechargednotwithsmugglingbut seriouslyendangeringtheship.

The2ndengineerwasstrippedofallhiscertificatesincludinghis chiefsticketforthatwouldhavebeenhisnextmove,alsohewas putonaplanefortheU.K.athisownexpenseandtoldhewould nevergotoseaagain.The3rdwasinstantlydismissedbuthadto workhispassagehomeanditwassaidhewouldbehardpressedto getajobontheWoolwichFerry.Thetwoofthemhadinvest edalot ofmoneyintheschemeandnaturallytheylostallofthataswell. Theonlypersontocomeupsmellingofroseswasth e12-4greaser whohadanightashoreinLasPalmas.
