1 /40 3.6 Donald Trump to Silicon Valley Elites: ‘Keep Going with the Incredible Innovation’ (8.99/9) Trump addressed the room of tech executives from companies such as Apple, Twitter, Alphabet, and Tesla, discussing the future of technology in America and praising the executives for their skills.

“Even more importantly, we want you to keep going with the incredible innovation,” said Trump. “There’s nobody like you in the world. In the world. There’s nobody like the people in this room. And anything we can do to help this go along, and we’re going to be there for you. And you’ll call my people, you’ll call me. It doesn’t make any difference. We have no formal chain of command around here.”

“And we’re going to make fair trade deals. We’re going to make it a lot easier for you to trade across borders,” added Trump.

“There’s a lot of restrictions, a lot of problems that I think you see. And if you have any ideas on that, that would be great. Because there are a lot of border restrictions and a lot of border problems,” he said. “You probably have less of a problem than some companies. Some companies have massive problems. But we’re going to solve those problems.”

2 /40 2.9 Kim Kardashian returns to Instagram after 10 week hiatus with twerking video (3.12/9) She's been absent from social media since being held up and robbed at gunpoint in Paris. But Kim Kardashian made a return on Wednesday - in avatar form, at least. The reality television star - who has been absent from the public eye for 10 weeks - promoted her new Kimoji merchandise, just in time for the holidays. Because nothing says Christmas like a shaking backside, the star's verified Kimoji Instagram account shared a video of an underwear clad kimoji, showcasing her curves. She also shared a cleavage-heavy picture of what appears to be herself, in a festive red bra and underwear set emblazoned with the word Savage on the trim. The content is captioned 'December 16', which means the Kimoji merch is set to drop on Friday. It's the first time the star has been seen on social media since the harrowing ordeal, when Kim was robbed by five armed men dressed in police uniforms, who bound and gagged her. She was then placed in a bathtub after she reportedly begged for her life. The heist saw the thieves rob Kim of over $10 million worth of her personal jewellery. And while her personal account, with 88.9 million followers, has lain dormant, she has liked the posts on her Kimoji account. The star has been reclusive since the robbery, avoiding red carpet events and social media. Meanwhile, Kim's husband Kanye West has recently been released from hospital following a series of bizarre incidents. The 39-year-old was taken to hospital on November 21 after suffering a 'psychotic break'. He had been taking part in a gym session at the West Hollywood home of trainer Harley Pasternak when he became agitated and allegedly began screaming that people were trying to kill him. Dr Michael Farzam was called to the scene and West was placed on a 5150 hold, which allows a physician to forcibly admit a patient to hospital, before being taken to the UCLA Medical Center. West is said to have been handcuffed to a gurney during the journey, which came two days after he launched a bizarre rant on stage in Sacramento, California, and 24 hours after he announced that he was canceling all remaining dates on his Life of Pablo tour. He and Kardashian are thought to have been arguing a lot in the run-up to his meltdown, while the attack on her in Paris on October 2 is also believed to have contributed. Kanye traveled to NYC on Wednesday to discuss his thoughts on the world, which he managed to squeeze into a fifteen minute meeting with the President-elect, who referred to the rapper as a 'great friend' on a self- signed copy of Time magazine. A source told People that the couple - who share daughter North and son Saint - will be spending the holidays together this year, despite the current strain the last few months has left on their marriage. 'Kim still denies they are getting a divorce, but things are definitely not great between her and Kanye,' the insider told the publication, adding that the couple has spent little time together since his release from the hospital. 'Kim acts annoyed. She seems miserable and is spending a lot of time with her family.' However, another source added that they are in constant contact, 'especially about the kids.'

The ABC late-night host will pull in just $15,000 for the gig, a low figure considering the Academy Awards ceremony is one of the biggest events in Hollywood. The late-night host — who hosted this year’s Emmy Awards — had previously joked about the job during his monologue on Monday’s episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” saying he was the only person willing to accept it.

“The producers and the Academy went through a long list of names, and in the end they decided that since I am already right across the street from where they do the show, I was the closest person to host,” Kimmel quipped, in reference to his studio on Hollywood Blvd. — literally across the street from the Dolby Theatre where the Oscars are held.

“I guess I have to get a tux now,” he said. “Or maybe I’ll wear jean shorts? Has anyone ever done that?”

LOS ANGELES — Patti Smith says that when she stumbled over the lyrics of a Bob Dylan song during the Nobel Prize ceremony last week, it was because she was overwhelmed with nerves by the enormity of the experience, not because she forgot the words to "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall. "

Smith writes in an essay published Wednesday by the New Yorker that after loving the song since she was a teenager and rehearsing it incessantly in the months and days leading up to the ceremony, its lyrics "were now a part of me. "

"I hadn't forgotten the words that were now a part of me," she writes. "I was simply unable to draw them out. "

The singer-songwriter explains that she had chosen one of her own songs when she was invited in September to perform at the Nobel ceremony in honor of the eventual literature laureate. But when Dylan was announced as the recipient, she chose one of her longtime favorites from his catalog.

Smith writes that on the morning of the ceremony, "I thought of my mother, who bought me my first Dylan album when I was barely sixteen. "

"It occurred to me then that, although I did not live in the time of Arthur Rimbaud, I existed in the time of Bob Dylan," Smith writes. "I also thought of my husband and remembered performing the song together, picturing his hands forming the chords. "

Smith suddenly stopped singing during her performance at Stockholm's Concert Hall on Dec. 10 and asked the orchestra to begin again. "I apologize. I'm sorry, I'm so nervous," Smith said at the time.

In her candid, poetic piece published Wednesday, she says guests at the ceremony received her kindly and told her that her performance "seemed a metaphor for our own struggles. " She says the experience made her "come to terms with the truer nature of my duty. "

"Why do we commit our work? Why do we perform? " she writes. "It is above all for the entertainment and transformation of the people. It is all for them. The song asked for nothing. The creator of the song asked for nothing. So why should I ask for anything? "

7 /40 1.8 Russell Westbrook of Oklahoma City Thunder irked by continual triple-double talk (1.02/9) SALT LAKE CITY -- Russell Westbrook , the Oklahoma City Thunder 's historically prolific point guard, is sick and tired of hearing and talking about triple- doubles.

Westbrook failed to get a triple-double for the third consecutive game in the Thunder's 109-89 loss Wednesday to the Utah Jazz , which qualifies as noteworthy due to his remarkable production so far this season.

"Honestly, man, people and this triple-double thing is kind of getting on my nerves," said Westbrook, who was 7-of-25 from the floor and committed five turnovers. "People think if I don't get it, it's like a big thing. When I do get it, it's a thing. If y'all just let me play. ... If I get it, I get it. If I don't, I don't. It is what it is. I really don't care. For the 100th time, I don't care. "

Westbrook is on pace to join Oscar Robertson as the only players in NBA history to average a triple-double for an entire season and recently had a streak of seven in a row, joining Michael Jordan , Wilt Chamberlain and Robertson as the only players to ever accomplish that feat.

But Westbrook wanted nothing to do with triple-double talk after his 27-point, six-rebound, five- assist outing in the lopsided loss to the Jazz.

"All I care about is winning, man, honestly," Westbrook said. "All the numbers, s--- don't mean nothing to me. "

Westbrook's numbers do appear to mean a lot to the Thunder, however.

Oklahoma City is 9-3 when Westbrook records a triple-double this season. The Thunder are 6-8 when he falls short of a triple-double, including back-to-back blowout losses to the Portland Trail Blazers and Jazz the last two nights. He had 20 points, six rebounds and six assists in the loss in Portland on Tuesday night.

Westbrook has had fewer than six rebounds in a game, his total in both of the back-to-back losses, only once this season. The five assists he had against the Jazz matched his season low.

Westbrook, who is averaging 30.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 10.6 assists, brushed off a question about whether it was realistic to expect him to continue to put up an average statistical line not seen in the NBA since Robertson's 1961-62 season.

"I don't know what's realistic," Westbrook said. "I just go out and play every night and that's it. I really don't care what people think is real or not. I just go out and compete and that's it. "

Thunder coach Billy Donovan pointed to the Thunder's poor shooting (36.6 percent from the floor) and the Jazz's outstanding shooting (58.3 percent from the floor) as the primary reasons that Westbrook didn't approach a triple-double Wednesday night. Donovan downplayed concern about the Thunder, who were 18-0 when Westbrook posted a triple-double last season, being so dependent on the point guard's all-around production.

"He is going to be who he is," Donovan said. "I think the biggest thing we talk about with Russell all the time, and I think Russell really talks about this a lot, is just playing efficiently. ... He had a hard time getting a triple-double tonight because of the shooting percentage that Utah shot and the fact that we didn't shoot the ball well. So there goes the rebounds and assists right off the board there. "

OKC's Westbrook not a factor as he falls well short of another triple-double in Jazz win deseretnews.com

8 /40 2.4 Made In Chelsea's Millie Mackintosh dares to bare by going braless in gold jumpsuit (1.00/9) She's completely loved-up with her boyfriend Hugo Taylor. But Millie Mackintosh put in a solo appearance without her former Made In Chelsea beau to celebrate the launch of the Wonderland winter issue at Bo Lang in London on Wednesday night. The 27-year-old star dared to bare by going braless in a gold silk jumpsuit that left little to the imagination. Scroll down for video Millie's slinky ensemble was embellished with black lace trim that accidentally showed off more than she bargained for. The brunette beauty's slender figure was on full display thanks to the sheer panels, which also offered a glimpse of her flat stomach. The gold ensemble was accessorised with a pair of black strappy heels, adding an extra touch of glamour. She wore her hair down loose and opted for a bronzed beauty look to accentuate her already glowing tan. Millie was joined by the likes of Dougie Poynter and Vanessa White at the bash, chatting away at the star-studded bash. Millie and Hugo went public with their rekindled romance in May when they travelled to the Monaco Grand Prix for Hugo's 30th birthday celebrations - the same week that Millie's divorce from rapper husband Professor Green, 33, was finalised. They previously dated back in 2011 when they met on the E4 reality show, Made In Chelsea. But the union was not to last and ended rather dramatically when Millie discovered Hugo had cheated on her with her friend, Rosie Fortescue. At the time, Millie claimed she would always love Hugo, saying in an interview: 'I loved him - those feelings don’t disappear – but I just always have to remind myself why we’re not together. 'I do think that, for the rest of my life, every time I see him, I’ll get that feeling in my stomach. I don’t think I could ever not get that butterfly feeling.'

10 /40 0.0 Students sing Christmas carols to their teacher suffering from cancer A sixth-grade teacher who is suffering from cancer was serenaded by her students in the front of her home in a heartwarming moment. Students from Baker Intermediate School in Kentucky gathered in the driveway of Kristy Blackwell's home on Monday and sang several Christmas carols to her. The gesture was one of many made by the students to keep Blackwell's spirits high, especially closer to the holidays, ever since she was diagnosed with brain cancer. Scroll down for video 'We're very blessed to be able to bring that to her,' Chorus Instructor Stephanie Puckett told LEX 18. In the video capturing the sweet moment, Blackwell is seen standing just steps from her front door, bundled in a blanket, as the group sings Christmas tunes. Blackwell, 34, who is a married mother of twin four-year-old boys, suffered a seizure while on vacation in June and was later diagnosed with stage 3 brain cancer. As soon as she told her students about the diagnosis, they promised she would not fight it alone and her fellow colleagues said she kept a positive and humble attitude. 'She came every day with a big happy big smile on her face and did her job just like normal, and teaching takes a lot out you,' math teacher Kara O'Rourke told LEX 18. Surgeons have since removed the tumor, according to a Gofundme page started up by staff and students at the school. In September, Blackwell left the school to begin treatments and students started a campaign called 'Be Well, Mrs. Blackwell.' Students have sold bracelets, made cards and are planning a spring fundraiser as they await Blackwell's return to the classroom. 'I want to help her,' sixth-grader River Gilkison told LEX 18. 'I want to do things for her because she did a lot for us in the two months that she was here.' Students have also started a Gofundme page to help Blackwell, her husband and their two sons financially and emotionally. 'With funds earned, Ben and Kristy can travel to and from treatments, provide for childcare when needed, buy for her dietary needs, and focus less on financial burdens and more on health and healing,' a note on the Gofundme page read. One of Blackwell's colleagues noted that sometimes the teacher feels like she does not deserve it. 'Like, she says she's just an ordinary person and really she's extraordinary,' social studies teacher Jessica Pedigo told LEX 18. The Gofundme account was created at the end of August and has since exceeded its $8,000 goal, raising $9,065.

11 /40 1.3 Aleppo's residents await safe passage from besieged areas According to Ahmad Qurah Ali, spokesman for the Ahrar al-Sham rebel group, Aleppo residents will be allowed to leave on Thursday, the injured going first.

CNN cannot independently confirm that all parties have agreed to the latest deal but reports from the city said things were generally calm. The original ceasefire collapsed less than a day after it began.

Deaths were reported on both sides Wednesday, while some 50,000 civilians are thought to remain inside the small pocket of eastern Aleppo still under rebel control.

Latest developments

Diplomats from Turkey, Russia and Iran will meet December 27 in Moscow to discuss the situation in Aleppo UN human rights chief says resumed bombardment in Aleppo likely a war crime Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accuses Syrian regime of breaking ceasefire Iranian President Hassan Rouhani called Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to congratulate him, state media says

Ceasefire a 'false hope'

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein said he was appalled by the swift collapse oft the initial ceasefire agreement.

"While the reasons for the breakdown in the ceasefire are disputed, the resumption of extremely heavy bombardment by the Syrian government forces and their allies on an area packed with civilians is almost certainly a violation of international law and most likely constitutes war crimes," he said in a statement Wednesday.

An Aleppo resident who spoke to CNN on condition of anonymity gave a harrowing account of the scene at a hospital in a rebel-controlled part of eastern Aleppo.

"I thought I walked into a slaughterhouse. There were dead bodies everywhere," the resident said. "There were many, wounded people. The doctors are not able to cope with the load anymore. They ran out of plasma and other medical supplies. "

In rebel-held areas, food and supplies are running out, the resident said. "People are living on the very last remaining sacks of baking flour they have. They are using wood from furniture they take from the house to use for cooking. There is no more cooking gas. "

Speaking to CNN from Aleppo Wednesday night, ITV correspondent Dan Rivers described what he said was a "constant percussion of artillery tank-fire. "

"We've seen rockets streaking behind us," he said.

Aleppo: Five years to ruins

The Syrian regime is on the brink of taking the whole city of Aleppo, having made sweeping gains in just over two weeks since its forces, backed by airstrikes, entered the enclave by ground.

Rebel groups held eastern Aleppo for more than four years after the Arab Spring uprising, and a regime siege on the area had essentially cut it off from the outside world, sparking a humanitarian crisis.

If the regime does take control of the key city, it would mark a turning point in the brutal five-year civil war that has killed hundreds of thousands of people.

'Why are you silent?'

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday accused the regime of breaking the truce.

"Turkey will not leave the people of Aleppo alone," he said, according to state-run news agency Anadolu.

"I call all parties and international society to respect the ceasefire, to support it. A humanitarian corridor should be open and innocent people should be able to leave with no obstacle and sabotage. People of Eastern Aleppo should leave safe and sound. "

The top diplomats of Turkey, Russia and Iran are set to meet on December 27 in Moscow to discuss the situation, Anadolu reported Wednesday, citing Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu.

But diplomatic efforts so far have seemed to have little impact on the streets of Aleppo, where the situation Wednesday appeared increasingly grim.

Fatemah Alabed, the mother of a 7-year-old girl whose tweets from the city have captured the world's attention, said intense bombing was taking place, asking: "Why are you silent? Why? "

Alabed also tweeted directly to Cavusoglu, saying they had hope Tuesday, "but what's happening now? Please help us now. No more time left. "

Cavusoglu responded, saying "Keep your hope my sister. Turkey hears your call. "

15 /40 1.4 Jazz get a taste of wholeness SALT LAKE CITY — It was quite an attractive look the Jazz rolled out, Wednesday at Vivint Arena. Plenty of attitude, lots of pizzazz. As for variety, they were a regular 31 flavors compared to most nights.

But the inventory waxes and wanes.

For the Jazz, that’s been the case all year. Don’t be surprised if it remains, to greater or lesser extent. Twenty-six games into the season, they have proven consistent in numerous areas, one of them being players on the injured list.

You wonder if somebody’s going to get hurt taking out the trash.

Speaking of trash, that’s what the Jazz did to Oklahoma City, in a 109-89 win. Even with the return of Derrick Favors and Rodney Hood, the Jazz just weren’t entirely themselves. They had most, but not all their pieces in place.

But it was a big improvement when it came to roll call.

Favors appeared in limited action, logging 13 careful minutes. His first appearance after a 13- game absence came with 3:04 left in the first quarter. In six first-half minutes he registered his only two points, four rebounds and a well-received block on former Jazz player Enes Kanter.

But the returnee with the most power under the hood was Hood. After a two-game absence, he came out looking like a guy fresh from a weeklong vacation: 25 points, including five 3-pointers. He shook the Thunder with a combination of outside touch-shots and stretching drives. His brief absence due to a balky hamstring ended with him in the starting lineup.

Still, others were missing as always. No George Hill. No Alec Burks. Getting everyone together at once is like staging a reunion. Always, someone has a reason to miss. This is something Jazz fans have come to accept, forever waiting for a complete picture. But this team isn’t likely to go the rest of the way with all hands on deck.

The Jazz seized first place in the Northwest Division with the win. Nearly a third of the way through the season, the pattern seems to be cast. The Jazz remain a strong bet for the playoffs. They began the night three games behind third-place Los Angeles and Houston in the conference standings.

There’s bound to be gridlock at spots 3-8 in the standings next spring. But to be among them now says something. Already the separation between contenders and the wretched refuse has begun.

The Jazz have positioned themselves regardless of an abbreviated menu, by rotating enough healthy players to get by. Still, the preferred starting lineup of Gordon Hayward, Rudy Gobert, Favors, Hill and Hood has started together only once all season.

The hope for the Jazz was that it would happen Wednesday. Both Favors and Hood were listed as questionable but played, as did Dante Exum, who was iffy thanks to tendinitis.

Favors had what coach Quin Snyder called “a minutes restriction.” But Hood could hardly have looked better. He made his first shot, a serene 3-pointer to start the game and followed with a corner trey. A 7-0 lead never entirely vanished.

For now the Jazz are in a good place. Where they finish the season is the question. They’ve missed 74 player-games due to illness and injury — 75 if you count Snyder’s single-game absence. The Jazz coach got blindsided by a 103-degree temperature and turned duties over to Igor Kokoskov.

Kokoskov, too, stepped in and won.

Meanwhile, don’t ask about Hayward’s healed finger. It still gives him pain some nights. (He finished with a quiet 17 points.) But the Jazz got 15 points from Shelvin Mack, 11 from Joe Ingles and three irritable blocked shots by Gobert.

This injury business is complicated. Yet the piecemeal approach has worked. Danger lurks, though. Utah isn’t the only team that has to adjust to absences. Oklahoma City played without its second-leading scorer, Victor Oladipo, who was out with a wrist sprain.

Still, for the Jazz it was a considerable morale boost. They reacquainted with one another. As usual, they got something extra from the stand-ins. But when Hood and Favors started the fourth quarter together, it provided a sense of completeness the team has missed. A full family picture would be something to keep.

The former One Directioner’s stepfather continued: “So from Johannah one last time, thank you for everything xxx.”

Ahead of a previously planned performance on “The X Factor” Saturday, Tomlinson similarly thanked his fans for their words of love and encouragement.

“All the support has been incredible,” the 24-year-old singer tweeted. “Let’s do this together tonight.”

Tomlinson sang his solo song “Just Hold On” live and wrapped up his performance by kissing his fingers and pointing them toward the sky to honor his late mother.

18 /40 18 /40 0.0 Don't let scammers snow you with iTunes or other gift cards When we popped into a CVS Pharmacy one evening to pick up holiday stuff before a snowstorm, I was taken aback when I heard something far different from Darlene Love singing "Marshmallow World. "

The in-store radio was broadcasting a rather lengthy warning about how you shouldn't buy iTunes gift cards after you get a call, supposedly from the Internal Revenue Service, demanding lots of cash.

The unsaid, underlying message: Don't let scammers snow you.

As we enter the gift card season, it's interesting to spot the extra efforts to warn consumers about the perils of buying gift cards for scam artists. No, we're not talking about the dangers of putting $5 or $10 on a McDonald's gift card for the crafty kid next door who works overtime to be too cute to ignore.

We're talking about the hard-core, steal-every-dollar-you-can and make-somebody-feel-really- dumb scammers. One of the hot, new scams of 2016 — getting victims to put cash on iTunes gift cards — is being addressed in the fragrance aisle and at the cash register in some stores.

"Gift cards and prepaid-card scams are a challenge to all retailers," said Stephanie Cunha, public relations manager for CVS Health in Woonsocket, R. I.

As a result, CVS is also incorporating a new point-of-sale warning when it comes to gift cards, too. If you buy a gift card at a CVS register, you'll see the following message on the screen at the check out: "Protect yourself from prepaid-card scams. Common scams include requests related to lotteries, taxes, a new job and helping someone in need. "

The warning goes on to tell consumers never to provide any prepaid-card information, including a PIN number or card number, to someone they don't know.

"If you feel you are a victim of fraud, reconsider your purchase and contact local law enforcement," the screen says.

A customer can even hit "cancel" on the screen when it comes to buying that prepaid card if they think they're about to hand over money to a con artist.

Such warnings come not a minute too soon, especially as we'll jump into tax season once again in January.

I wrote a story in late September about a young college student who put $1,762 on iTunes cards to pay what a con artist convinced her that she owed in back taxes. She didn't owe anything.

Sophisticated fraudsters — who saw sizable resistance lately from authorities — will no doubt soon resume attempting to file fraudulent tax returns in order to generate generous tax refunds for themselves.

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) issued a new poster and a new flyer on Tuesday to warn taxpayers about the fraudulent calls from people impersonating the IRS and Treasury Department officials. The poster is designed to be printed out and used wherever gift cards are sold. But it can be helpful at senior centers or other locations to warn people about this crazy gift card scam, too.

TIGTA is working with a range of private and public partners to fight the scam. And Apple is engaging with retailers on in-store communications efforts, such as the one I heard at a CVS in Ferndale.

Unfortunately, we cannot get the word out enough about why you don't want to put money on an iTunes gift card to pay tax bills — or deal with other demands from random callers.

"Despite the excellent progress we have made in our investigation of this matter, the callers are aggressive and relentless," J. Russell George, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, said in a statement.

"Once they have your attention, they will say anything to con you out of your hard-earned cash. "

Widely publicized law enforcement actions took place in October in the U. S. and India, and reportedly have cut into much of the tax-related scam activity.

After a three-year joint investigation, the U. S. Department of Justice obtained an indictment in October involving dozens of alleged fraudsters based in the U. S. and five call centers in India, all accused of tricking people into paying fake tax bills either by wire or by placing money on prepaid cards.

At one point, authorities were hearing of 150 new scam victims a week. But for the week that ended Dec. 5, only 11 consumers reported falling victim to the scam, according to TIGTA's records. A month earlier, TIGTA had heard reports from 60 new victims for the week ending Nov. 7.

Still, federal watchdogs are concerned that "scammers will attempt to restart their engines at any time, or copycats will get into the game as soon as the filing season begins on Jan. 23, if not before. "

The iTunes part of the scam began heating up in the spring. TIGTA put out warnings in April and June that scammers were demanding payment on the Apple iTunes gift cards, as well as on other gift cards.

Con artists — including those involved with other scams — often request payments on Green Dot Prepaid Cards, MoneyPak Prepaid Cards, Reloadit Prepaid Debit Cards and prepaid credit cards.

Earlier this month, the IRS warned that consumers are being targeted by automated calls, on which scammers leave urgent callback requests demanding that someone settle a “tax bill.”

Another type of scam: Con artists are calling and pretending that they have your tax return and asking to "verify" details, including bank account numbers.

And the IRS reports that it has received numerous reports from around the country of scammers sending phony CP2000 notices for underreported income.

"Generally, the scam involves an e-mail or letter that includes the fake CP2000. The fraudulent notice includes a payment request that taxpayers mail a check made out to “I. R. S.” to the “Austin Processing Center” at a Post Office Box address," the IRS said.

The bottom line: The con artists are clever and come up with new ways to trick consumers at every turn.

If you're not careful to watch for warning signs, what might sound legitimate — or initially scare you to pieces — could very well snowball into a very big scam.

20 /40 20 /40 0.9 Destiny's Child singer Michelle Williams praises actress of same name for SAG nomination after journalist mixes them up Michelle Williams, the singer principally known for having been part of Destiny's Child, got a bit of misdirected love on Wednesday. A journalist had tweeted at the songstress about being 'thrilled' over the latter's Screen Actor's Guild Award nomination. The hitch: as the Rockford native pointed out, the reporter had meant to address the actress Michelle Williams, who's not on Twitter, rather than the musical artist. DuJour senior editor Frances Dodds had originally tweeted: '@RealMichelleW so thrilled about your #SAGAwards nom, you were a delight to interview for @DuJourMedia!' The Hello Heartbreak singer quoted the tweet and responded: 'I'm the "other" Michelle Williams but congrats to Michelle Williams!' adding an emoji of a winking face emitting a heart from its puckered lips. An abashed Dodds replied, and the former Strictly Come Dancing contestant graciously retweeted: '@RealMichelleW GAH OMG so sorry Michelle, lol, auto-pilot tweeting!! But I love you-- would die to interview you too!!' Actress Michelle did, indeed, scoop up a Screen Actors Guild Award nod for her supporting performance as a bereaved mother in Manchester By The Sea. The My Week With Marilyn Star, herself a mother, told Dobbs during that interview with DuJour that the filming period 'was a really painful time. I was very happy whenever I could go back home to New York.' As she explained: 'Once you’ve let your mind go to that place, it’s very hard to walk it back. It’s every parent’s worst nightmare… it’s the place that you don’t let yourself go, because even to glance it as a thought is just too painful. So to sit in that space for hours or days at a time was agonising.' What gave her such anguish was 'Not only imagining something like that in my own life, but knowing there are mothers - women, walking the planet today - who are dealing with that. It breaks my heart how broken their hearts must me.' As she pointed out: 'I’m lucky enough that I could dip in and out of that place. But to know that there are mothers who cannot leave that place'. The Brokeback Mountain actress explained: 'That was the thing that really got me. 21 /40 0.6 Katie Price sets record straight after claims she 'used son Harvey's badge to park in a disabled space' by posting video of the unrestricted bay on Twitter Katie Price has taken to Twitter to dispel claims she parked in a restricted bay using her son Harvey's disabled badge without him present. The 38-year-old star uploaded a video to the social media site which showcased that the space she had parked in was not disabled. The fiery response comes after reports she headed alone to a local tanning salon in Sussex and left her son's disabled parking permit on the dashboard of her Mercedes van - an act that could have garnered fines up to £1,000. Scroll down for video In the clip, Katie expresses her desire to prove the claims made against her wrong as she films the space and its accompanying signs. Panning across the bay and the signs denoting the parking limitations, the former glamour model proves that the bay was in fact not disabled, but a Car Club space instead. She then proceeds to film her pink Range Rover, which she has parked in an ordinary and unrestricted space for her day of errands. Providing a voice over, the mother-of-five explains in the video: 'I was actually parked here in this spot, here, and they’ve said it was disabled [pans to parking sign] but there’s no disabled sign, absolutely nowhere. 'They got it wrong again and even if I come near where my car is parked, it’s still not disabled. Exactly.' Moving on from the tense issue, she then expressed her excitement about appearing on the upcoming episode of Loose Women in a follow-up Tweet. However several viewers have still called her up on her parking in responses to the Tweet - highlighting that she has not parked in the lines, which still warrants 'a parking penalty notice'. The video response comes after she reportedly used her disabled badge to park in a restricted space without her son Harvey present. Harvey, her 14-year-old child from a previous relationship with Dwight Yorke, suffers from a rare genetic condition called Prader-Willi syndrome, as well as autism, ADHD and blindness. The Sunday Mirror report that the model- turned-businesswoman was alone when she parked the white van in the spot before heading into the Horsham salon. The publication claimed that after fixing the time on the card, which are permitted to those with severe mobility problems, Katie headed into the salon alone. Last week's reported incident was the second time Katie has hit headlines in issues surrounding parking, having suffered another altercation six years ago. Katie was under investigation back in 2010 after arguing with a pensioner over a disabled parking space - but no arrests were made after police spoke to both parties. The model was alleged to have become involved in a disagreement with an elderly man after her husband Alex Reid used a disabled bay at the Comet store in Goldstone Retail Park, Hove.

22 /40 1.1 This girl's like Brian Blessed in sequins screaming love songs: QUENTIN LETTS experiences a vortex of volume as Dreamgirls opens in West End DREAMGIRLS For more than an hour after seeing Dreamgirls I had ear-ache. This must be the noisiest show ever. Its star, Amber Riley, has a voice so beefy, it could be served on a trolley next door at Simpson’s-in-the-Strand. Miss Riley, big in America (and not small here, come to that), does not so much sing to an audience as sand-blast it. As a boy I was brought up near Fairford aerodrome when they were testing Concorde in the early 1970s. I swear it was never as loud as Miss Riley. A blast of dynamite would be mere rhubarbing compared to this lady’s larynx. She makes the late Whitney Houston sound pianissimo. I’m amazed the backstage staff have not gone stone deaf during previews. Miss Riley plays Effie, lead singer in an early 1960s Chicago singing trio, The Dreamettes. They are taken on by a sharp manager (Joe Aaron Reid, rather good). Although he is having an affair with Effie, he demotes her in favour of the more glamorous Deena (the splendidly named Liisi LaFontaine). The group is renamed The Dreams and by the time the 1970s come along they have dropped Effie altogether and achieved world supremacy. First seen in 1981, the tale may or may not be based on that of the Supremes. Tom Eyen’s script does not flesh things out much (and makes oddly little play of the race-equality theme). Barely a few sentences separate Henry Krieger’s pulsating R&B songs. The numbers include Cadillac Car, I Want You Baby and One Night Only, which in a less stentorian rendition can be a lovely ballad. Miss Riley’s bone-juddering decibels – never lustier than when she roars the pre-interval And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going, and I swear my glasses nearly blew off my nose, such was her vocal power – push the show into a terrifying vortex of volume. The orchestra starts giving the score dollops more mustard to match her and the other singers follow suit. Imagine a kingdom where everyone shouts like television sets on full-notch loudness. Imagine Brian Blessed in a sequin-shimmery gown, screaming soprano love songs. Aiee, the din! In row F of the stalls, I felt my chipmunk cheeks doing that G-force thing astronauts used to suffer in pre- launch tests. Lord knows why director Casey Nicholaw bothered to use any of his budget on microphones for the honking Amber. Even without amplification she’d be audible down on Trafalgar Square. The physical discomfort was accentuated by piercing whistles from several people near me; and that tells you that the show is, yes, good fun and likely to be a hit. Staged colourfully and slickly, it will make jolly holiday fare for many. It has great costumes and incessant dancing. Adam Bernard is ace as the Dreams’ co-star. Tyrone Huntley does well as Effie’s brother. Those with a taste for simple storylines may enjoy the ruthless schmaltz as Effie fights her way back to fame after her fall. But I bet the Savoy’s loop system has blown a gasket. And might not just the occasional softer number make for a more rounded evening’s art?

26 /40 2.5 ‘The Batman’ Is Officially Coming In 2018, Ben Affleck Explains Why It Has Taken So Long Affleck explained,

“We still have to get a screenplay and get it together. I’m a real believer in not reverse engineering projects to meet a window or a date, but rather when you get the right story, the right idea, the right thing, then you make the movie. That’s what we’re doing, and I’m hoping to get that done. I’m spending a lot of time working on that, but also working on other stuff.” “If I could, there’s nothing I’d love more than to direct a stand-alone iconic, great Batman movie. But it’s been done. Chris Nolan did three really great movies. I’m really mindful of that. I’m not in any hurry to jam the mediocre movie down the pipe. I really want to make sure, if we do it, we get the great version and one that’s worthy of tradition of guys like Tim Burton, Chris Nolan, and Christian Bale.”

“At a certain point you have to look forward and try to believe in your own vision for it and not be looking over your shoulder the whole time. I go into that movie with a tremendous amount of respect for the people who came before me.”

27 /40 1.5 Emma Stone dazzles in a chic floral blouse at La Land Reception in London After being tipped for multiple gongs, the La Land cast were no doubt shocked to see it had been left out of the top film category in the Screen Actors Guild nominations. But leading lady Emma Stone - who herself received a Best Actress nod - seemed to put the snub behind her as she attended a reception in honour of the film at The Arts Club in London on Wednesday. Looking effortlessly chic, the 28-year- old actress donned a printed baby blue blouse that flattered her porcelain complexion. Scroll down for video She teamed the garment with cropped black trousers, whilst she added some height in a pair of patent black heels. Leaving her auburn locks loose and tousled, she styled her glossy tresses in a side parting that framed her pretty features. Beaming broadly, she seemed in high spirits as she mingled with the guests, which included the likes of Samantha Barks, Poppy Jamie and Lady Amelia Windsor. The event was thrown in honour of La Land just hours after it was snubbed by the SAG Awards. Captain Fantastic, Fences, Hidden Figures Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight all received nods for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, but the musical didn't make the grade. However, Emma and her co-star Ryan Gosling did earn nods in the Best Actor female and male categories. The Easy A star also earned herself a Golden Globe Best Actress nomination for her role in the musical. Emma's double nomination should be a welcome boost as she looks ahead to the forthcoming Academy Award nominations and a reasonable chance at winning her first Oscar. La Land picked up nods in almost all major film categories outside the Drama nominees as the Golden Globe nominations were read out earlier this week. The film picked up acting nominations for its leads Stone and Gosling in the Musical Or Comedy categories, as well as Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Director for Damien Chazelle, Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Song. La Land harks back to Tinseltown's golden era of big musicals. The story focuses on an actress and jazz musician who fall in love while struggling to make it. The film goes on general release in the United Kingdom on January 13, 2017.

29 /40 1.0 Backing up files, keeping software updated can help fend off ransomware Imagine hackers holding your computer and all of the files on it hostage, then demanding money from you to recover access.

It's a growing problem, even in the Triangle.

A Raleigh man became a victim to the scam this fall. While on his computer, a security warning popped up with a phone number to call. Hackers locked his computer using ransomware.

Consumer Reports says it can happen to anyone.

"If you are victim of ransomware, you will see a pop-up window on your computer screen. It will say, 'all your files have been locked and to get them back, you’re going to have to pay a ransom,'" Consumer Reports' Jerry Beilinson said. "We suggest that you not click on the window unless you are willing to pay. "

Consumer Reports says to make sure the pop-up isn't fake by closing your browser window. If it comes back when you reopen, you could have a real problem.

The solution to the problem is in backing up files beforehand.

"If you have a recent backup of your data, you probably won't need to pay the ransom. But if you don’t have recent backup, you very well have to pay the ransom in order to get your files back," Beilinson said.

If you have a backup, you can transfer files to a clean computer or use them to rebuild your current one. A computer professional can usually help rebuild a machine or help set up a new one.

To make it harder for hackers to gain access, keep your operating system and all software, including security software, up to date.

Turning on automatic updates for those programs can help with that.

Consumer Reports recommends other preventative measures such as carefully reading any pop-up before you click, even on trusted websites.

The Raleigh man who fell victim to the scam called the number of his screen thinking he was working with Microsoft. He initially paid the fee to "fix" his computer, but ultimately, his daughter was able to get his computer unlocked and his money back.

31 /40 2.4 Ferndale’s Otus Supply looks to be worth the wait More than a year ago, restaurateur Thom Bloom gave me a tour of a gutted, 10,000-square-foot space on E. Nine Mile that would become Otus Supply, his bar, restaurant and music venue in downtown Ferndale.

I prodded him throughout the year about when he thought it may open. First it was late 2015, then the plan was spring. Now he’s confident that food and beverage service will be ready to go for the public on Tuesday.

Last week at I got a peek at the finished product and understood why it took more than a year to finish. Details of this quality take time.

Named after a genus of owl, the restaurant has an incredibly interesting design that conjures comparisons to the world of Harry Potter, with some steampunk touches. Although brand new, different areas of the dining room — separated by walls with circular doorways that are a nod to an owl’s nest — look lived-in and inviting.

Chicago-based designer Alex Morales has created a space that gives diners a reason to look up from their menus and cell phones and enjoy the surrounding view. One wall is made of reclaimed wooden pallets, which leads into a room with walls like leather patchwork. That leads into a library-like space with silver, gold and black damask wallpaper. Another wall has bits of assorted wood and legs of wooden tables and chairs tacked to it and painted over one grayish- white color.

Art is everywhere at Otus Supply, which has a bar inside the 150-seat dining area, and another inside an adjacent live music room.

Metro Detroit artist Malt designed a mural of colorful birds for the lobby, and Kobie Solomon (he did the lion mural at Russel Industrial Center that is visible from Interstate 75) has two pieces inside the restaurant, including a 50-foot mural in the front of the dining area where garage doors can roll up to allow open-air dining in appropriate weather.

Bloom says chef Myles McVay is preparing to debut a farm-to-table menu that is inspired by the bounty of the Great Lakes region and uses no GMOs or corn syrups. Much of the food served — including the shrubs and tonic used in the craft cocktails — will be made in-house from scratch. Details of the menu are under wraps, but we know that there will be some small plates, handmade pasta, pizza and other items prepared in a wood-fired oven. McVay, who has worked at D’Matos and Opus One to name a few places, is also a rock musician in the Detroit band Dirtwolf. This is just one of many components of Otus Supply that connects it to the local music scene.

Bloom and his partner at Otus Supply, Scott Myrick, have known each other since the early 1990s when they were in the local concert business. So it’s no wonder they carved out a special place at their new venue for live music.

The live music area is called the Parliament room. It’s named after the term for group of owls (and also because “we don’t hate George Clinton,” Bloom says). The room has its own bar and room for 200-300 people, depending on the setup.

Music industry veteran Scott Guy and Detroit-based promoter and talent buyer Joe Choma will work on booking acts. Upcoming shows include Greg Burns and Friends on Dec. 30 and Kitchen Dwellers and Whistle Stop Revue on Dec. 31. Both shows will serve as after-parties for the Greensky Bluegrass shows at Royal Oak Music Theatre. The Rebirth Brass Band will play Jan. 16.

Michigan hitmakers from the 1990s, the Verve Pipe, will perform Saturday. Drinks will be flowing that night, but Bloom says food service won’t be available until next week.

Otus Supply is at 345 E. Nine Mile in Ferndale. Visit otussupply.com.

■Another Ferndale restaurant named after a bird, Black Eagle pop-up kitchen (which operates out of the Bosco) will debut a brunch menu this weekend. Sweet and savory “brunch bowls” will be served 10 a.m.-3 p.m. The Bosco, which also has a full bar, is at 22930 Woodward.

■A second MEX location will open at Great Lakes Crossing Friday. The original MEX opened in 2013 in Bloomfield Hills. It’s owned and operated by Peas & Carrots Hospitality, which also oversees Social Kitchen & Bar in Birmingham and Beau’s Grillery in Bloomfield Hills. The 6,000- square-foot restaurant will serve lunch and dinner and is at the entrance of District 6, near Legoland Discovery Center. [email protected]

The Phantom of the Opera star, 30, tweeted the good news on Wednesday, December 14. “Playing Fiona Gallagher has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. I’m so happy to continue w my SHAMELESS family! Back to work in May!” she wrote.

An insider told Variety that Rossum was offered pay equality months ago, but she held out and asked for more. The Day After Tomorrow a ctress asked to be paid more than Macy to “make up for previous seasons where she was making significantly less than him,” according to the website.

As an Emmy winner and Oscar nominee, Macy started off with a higher salary when the series began in 2011. Seven seasons later, Rossum has become a lead and an integral part of the storylines, while Macy’s character Frank Gallagher was almost killed off in the season 6 finale.

33 /40 3.4 Bob Krasnow, executive who revived Elektra Records and guided Natalie Cole to a Grammy, dies at 82 An ugly list of marching orders awaited Bob Krasnow when he took the helm of Elektra Records in 1983.

Once a powerhouse label for the rock titans of the day — the Doors, Queen, the Eagles — Elektra was struggling and Krasnow had unpleasant business ahead of him. The label’s Los Angeles office would have to be closed, 200 of the company’s 300 employees let go and its stable of 150 recording artists gutted.

“I went through the roster with a hacksaw,” he told the Los Angeles Times in a 1989 interview. “It didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out they needed to get rid of most of those acts and start over.” The feeling in the industry was that Krasnow had unwittingly taken on a mortician’s job and that Elektra would soon be dismantled.

Instead, the record executive put the label back together as a leaner. more diverse collection of singers and bands, from new talent like Tracy Chapman and 10,000 Maniacs to rock hipsters like the Cure and the Pixies and heavy metal outfits like Metallica and Motley Crue.

Krasnow, who died Sunday in Wellington, Fla., at the age of 82 , was revered for his taste and his ear, qualities that made him an uncanny spotter of musical talent, motivated him to help found the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and — quicker than many thought possible — made Elektra relevant again.

“When he took over, it looked like he had stepped into a plane that was going straight toward the ground at a very fast speed,” former Virgin Records director Jeff Ayeroff said. “But he pulled it out at the last minute. Because of that, everyone sort of looks at him in awe.”

Born in Rochester, N. Y., on July 20, 1934, Krasnow grew up in L. A. where he would prowl the record shops on the Westside, shuffling through the stacks of singles, and then rush back home to listen to them, sometimes imagining that he was in the studio guiding the artists. His parents were not won over by his musical tastes, particularly the earthy sounds of rhythm and blues that he favored.

“‘Don’t get sidetracked by this music thing,”’ he said his parents cautioned him. ‘“Practice your violin. Take your Hebrew lessons.”’

But he was stubborn. After four years in the Navy, he worked in promotions for James Brown and took a low-paying sales took a job at Decca Records just to get a taste of the industry. He later hooked up with King Records in San Francisco, where the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and other Bay Area groups where shaping what would become the soundtrack of the psychedelic era.

Krasnow moved back to L. A. and worked with Warner Bros. Records and Buddah Records before founding Blue Thumb Records, an early-day alternative label that attracted a broad range of artists from Ike and Tina Turner to T. Rex. He sold Blue Thumb in 1974 and moved to Warner Bros., where he asked to hunt up new talent. He proved so skilled at the job that he was given what seemed a hopeless task — breathe new life into Elektra, fat with talent but lean on profits.

George Martin was a music producer in London, on the prowl for rock ’n’ roll acts in the early 1960s, when he came across a band that had been turned down by every record company in town.

George Martin was a music producer in London, on the prowl for rock ’n’ roll acts in the early 1960s, when he came across a band that had been turned down by every record company in town.

He wasn’t bowled over by the demo tapes, but, as he later recalled, “there was an unusual quality of sound,... He parted ways with dozens of artists. A few, like Linda Ronstadt, he worked to hang on to.

“I took a giant bouquet of tulips to Linda,” he recalled in a 1990 interview with the British newspaper the Independent. “I was like, legs with tulips, that’s how many there were. I walk in. I give them to her. She says, ‘What’s this got to go with me? I make records.’”

Krasnow said he told Ronstadt that he was the new president at Elektra and was the one who would make her records work.

‘”When my records comes out, I’ll worry about who’s president,’” he said she replied. “I thought, ‘That’s welcoming.’”

Ronstadt stayed with Elektra, though others like Don Henley did not.

Krasnow quickly rebuilt the label with fresh talent. He liked Tracy Chapman immediately. He found acts like the Cure, 10,000 Maniacs and the Gypsy Kings to be intriguing. And, after a long weekend of thinking it over, he signed Metallica, even though he was no great fan of headbanger music.

One of his most celebrated moves was persuading Natalie Cole to record an album of duets singing along with classics recorded by her late father, Nat King Cole. “Unforgettable” was a runaway hit and won the Grammy for best album of the year.

Years later, after leaving Elektra, he founded his own label, Krasnow Entertainment. He later retired to Palm Beach, Fla.

His son, Mitchell Krasnow, said that even in retirement his father kept his ears open and sometimes talked with him about alternative artists and independent acts he’d happen to hear. One day, his son said, his father began raving about Lourde, then a little known singer/songwriter from New Zealand.

“I don’t even know where he would hear this music,” his son said.

Krasnow was among a small group that founded the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland in 1983. He was also a board member for the New York City Center and the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

He is survived by his son Mitchell, a daughter Debra and a brother, Paul. His wife, Nada Lantz, died last year. An earlier marriage to Sandy Krasnow ended in divorce.

34 /40 0.4 Pitbull not talking about Florida tourism deal even as pressure mounts — Pitbull and his attorneys are not talking, but pressure is mounting in the Florida Legislature against the Miami music icon over a secret contract he has with the state’s tourism marketing agency to promote Florida beaches.

A day after Florida House Speaker Richard Corcoran filed suit against Pitbull’s production company to force disclosure of the deal, attorneys for the pop star were refusing to talk about the case.

“We have no comment on this matter,” said Leslie Jose Zigel, an attorney representing Pitbull and his company, PDR Productions Inc.

Corcoran’s strong-arm legal tactic is gaining support as state legislators express moral outrage at the music video Pitbull released in the summer that includes bikini-clad women frolicking on the beach. The Sexy Beaches video ends with the social media hashtag #ILoveFL.

“I’m not against people having bold ideas and executing on those,” said state Sen. Jeff Brandes, a St. Petersburg Republican who is chairman of a committee with oversight of the state’s tourism budget. “But I want to make sure that at the end of the day that it reflects the values of the state of Florida. That’s the major concern here.”

House Democratic Leader Janet Cruz called the video offensive because of the “sexualization and degradation of women.”

“It’s demeaning to women,” said Cruz, a Tampa Democrat.

She said if Pitbull wants to make those types of songs and videos, Florida taxpayers shouldn’t be paying for it.

Corcoran has called the lyrics “reprehensible” and called the video terrible.

How much Florida helped pay for that video is a mystery. Visit Florida, the state’s tourism arm, has refused to release details of its contract with Pitbull. Visit Florida officials say terms of the deal are protected as a “trade secret.” Visit Florida CEO Will Seccombe said he’ll never do another contract that doesn’t disclose the terms because of the position the Pitbull contract has put everyone in, but he insists the deal was a good one, allowing Visit Florida to reach an audience that avoids traditional advertising and media.

Pitbull’s attorneys as recently as last week warned the Florida House that disclosure of a trade secret would violate state law and could result in a felony against anyone who discloses the information. Corcoran has seen the terms of the deal and wants it made public. But instead of trying to force Visit Florida to disclose the deal, Corcoran has sued Pitbull’s production company, PDR Productions Inc., arguing the contract is not eligible to be protected under the state’s trade secrets confidentiality clause.

Even Gov. Rick Scott, who has been supportive of Visit Florida’s mission over the years, said Tuesday that he has issues with the Pitbull contract being shielded from the public.

“This is ridiculous and must be fixed,” Scott said on Twitter. “Taxpayers have a right to know how their money is spent.” Corcoran has threatened deep budget cuts for Visit Florida if it can’t provide more detail on deals to advertise the state. Since 2009, the Florida Legislature has increased Visit Florida’s budget from $29 million to $78 million. Visit Florida has requested a $76 million budget for 2017-2018.

36 /40 1.9 Carlsbad desalination plant produces 15 billion gallons of fresh water in first year A mere year after opening, the Claude “Bud” Lewis Carlsbad Desalination Plant is seeing enormous success in its efforts to provide water for California in the midst of the state’s multi-year drought.

Opened on Dec. 14 2015, the Carlsbad plant uses the most technologically advanced seawater desalination equipment of any plant in the nation. Pulling water from the Pacific Ocean, it met around 10 percent of San Diego County’s water demands in its first year, producing more than 15 billion gallons of fresh water.

“This plant is a game-changer for San Diego County,” said Mark Muir, chair of the San Diego County Water Authority’s Board of Directors. “It’s gratifying that this visionary investment our region’s ratepayers strongly supported is paying dividends now, and we expect it to continue to do so for decades to come. Every drop of water we produce locally is a drop that we don’t need to import from outside the region.”

Reverse osmosis is used at the Carlsbad plant, which is then blended with water from other sources. Each gallon of drinking-quality water costs about half a cent to produce. The plant is part of a $1 billion desalination project in the San Diego area that includes three components: the desalination plant adjacent, a 10-mile pipeline that connects to the Water Authority’s regional distribution system and upgrades to Water Authority facilities for distributing desalinated seawater throughout the region.

37 /40 3.6 Want to hear the school choir? Don’t be overly religious – Saunders Kids, listen to Uncle B. S.

If you play this thing right, you may never have to go to school again – except to eat lunch, clean out your lockers and to pick up your diplomas.

Student choirs from four Wake County schools were scheduled to participate last week in the Apex Christmas Nativity Celebration, but NO-SAFEWAEA – the National Organization to Stop Anyone From Ever Worshiping Anything Ever Again – raised a ruckus that could be heard in the heavens.

Oops – as far away as Clayton.

Actually, it wasn’t NO-SAFEWAEA, but the Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation , that put the kibosh on the annual holiday event – proving that cheese isn’t the only thing coming out of that state.

After the students were forbidden to participate because the school board’s law firm, Tharrington Smith, accurately concluded that the ceremony was unconstitutionally akin to religious recruitment, there was the predictable hullabaloo about a “war on Christmas” and political correctness – whatever the heaven that means.

School spokesman Tim Simmons told me that students and schools aren’t forbidden to participate in celebrations that have religious themes, as long as the purpose for the event isn’t to proselytize unto others.

The lawyers – and the school board for acceding to this lawyerly wisdom – probably headed off a lawsuit. Simmons said everything was Kool & the Gang – the choirs would’ve been able to perform – until a pastor made a video explaining “the purpose of the event.” In doing so, Simmons said, the pastor “makes it clear that as part of this great opportunity, you get to provide religious testimony.”

“If I go to a Christmas event and they happen to have a nativity scene but the rest of the event is pretty secular – you know, it’s children singing songs – then you’re not in a position where you’re endorsing a religion,” Simmons said. “When you send a school to an event in which the intent clearly includes something like what was explained in the video, which is, ‘Hey, there’s an opportunity to testify’ – from the lawyer’s perspective, you’re on the wrong side of the line.”

In response to a question from me, Simmons noted that “you could argue that any nativity scene would be an endorsement of a religion, but that’s not how the courts look at it. It has to be more overt than that.”

Now, here’s how students can dramatically reduce their number of mandatory school days and tests. A popular restaurant has as its motto “It’s always Friday somewhere” or “in here it’s always Friday” or something. (Dang, maybe it isn’t so popular.)

Likewise – at least for the purpose of making school less intellectually burdensome – it’s always a religious holiday somewhere, to somebody.

Try this, kids. The next time a teacher flummoxes you with a pop quiz on the mating habits of the musk ox in colonial America or something for which you haven’t studied, you can flummox her and become a hero to your similarly unprepared classmates.

Sorry, Miss Fulton. Today is Irving R. Feldman’s birthday, and the Constitution states that no tests shall be administered on the date celebrating Irving R. Feldman’s birthday.

Simmons said such incidents “are not very common” and are handled on a case-by-case basis.

“The teachers try to be sensitive in those situations,” he said. “The question here (with the nativity celebration) is whether you can send four schools” to a program with the expressed aim of providing religious testimony.

Get angry at the Wisconsin folks at the Freedom From Religion Foundation all you want. Vow, even, to never again eat cheese – unless it’s in macaroni and cheese; hey, we aren’t fanatics. Still, the U. S. Constitution is unequivocal and clear: Keep religion and the state separate.

That doesn’t mean the attendees at last week’s nativity celebration had to be deprived of the sweet, soothing sounds of the school choirs.

How about if the students never actually attended the nativity celebration, but observed the invisible “wall of separation” about which Jefferson wrote by standing out on the sidewalk and singing their secular songs loudly?

Simmons said the songs didn’t have to be secular because “a lot of religious songs have historical value to them – ‘Handel’s Messiah’ and ‘O Come All Ye Faithful’ are pretty historical pieces of music.’ You don’t have to stick to singing ‘Frosty the Snowman’ or whatever.”

Cool, but to be on the safe side of the Professional Opponents Of Proselytizing – POOP – who comprise Freedom From Religion, let’s stick with non-religious fare.

Choir director: Alright children, PROJECT!

We wish you a merry whatever it is y’all are celebrating in there

38 /40 4.0 Ashlee Simpson Promises New Music in 2017 Finally! It’s been eight long years since Ashlee Simpson released her last album, Bittersweet World , but she assures Us Weekly that fans won’t have to wait too much longer for a follow-up. While sipping coffee-infused cocktails at the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf Holiday Celebration in Los Angeles on December 13, Simpson told Us that she and her husband of two years, Evan Ross , have been hard at work on a very special project. Explained Simpson, “We’re working on an album together. So in the new year, that will be happening! It’s been really fun to work together.”

The parents of 16-month-old daughter Jagger Snow say that working together has been a pleasure. “When you work separately,” Ross explained, “you don’t get to hang out — so this works out well.” Added Simpson, “This way we can tour together! I’m definitely excited. I love working with my husband.”

The two describe their new sound as “soulful, fun and reflective of music that [we] both like” — but they were quick to add that Simpson hopes to also do a solo album in the not-too-distant future. “We’re doing this album together and then we’ll go off and do our own,” says the “Pieces of Me” singer.

The mom of two (Simpson shares son Bronx, 8, with ex-husband Pete Wentz ) says that prioritizing her parenting duties accounts for her long absence from the charts. "I think being a mom kind of took the place of [music], definitely. She told Us. Added her husband, "I don’t think she ever really stopped. Music is something so important to both of us. So we’ll release this album and then she’ll work on hers.”

Another thing that’s important to the couple? Expanding their family! Discussing their upcoming album, Simpson laughed, saying, “We’re doing this – before the next baby!” Explained Ross, whose mom is legendary singer Diana Ross, "I want a ton [of kids]! I think I want more than she does! I grew up with five kids in my family, and that was great. "

For now, the couple is enjoying the kids that they already have. Said Simpson of her daughter, “She’s daddy’s little twin! But if you’re around her, she definitely has my mannerisms and she’s goofy like me. Anything her brother is doing, she wants to do.” And Bronx is OK with that? "He is the best big brother. He is so sweet,” Simpson gushed. "He is so protective of her and I think that will continue. And we all laugh at her because she’s so funny! He’s honestly so good with her, it’s awesome. We do everything together as a family. The age difference doesn’t matter – she’s excited about anything he’s doing. And the three of us play games and she’s so happy to just hang out and chill with everyone. "
