Charles Deering McCormick Library of Special Collections Northwestern University Libraries Dublin Gate Theatre Archive The Dublin Gate Theatre Archive, 1928 - 1979 History: The Dublin Gate Theatre was founded by Hilton Edwards (1903-1982) and Micheál MacLiammóir (1899-1978), two Englishmen who had met touring in Ireland with Anew McMaster's acting company. Edwards was a singer and established Shakespearian actor, and MacLiammóir, actually born Alfred Michael Willmore, had been a noted child actor, then a graphic artist, student of Gaelic, and enthusiast of Celtic culture. Taking their company’s name from Peter Godfrey’s Gate Theatre Studio in London, the young actors' goal was to produce and re-interpret world drama in Dublin, classic and contemporary, providing a new kind of theatre in addition to the established Abbey and its purely Irish plays. Beginning in 1928 in the Peacock Theatre for two seasons, and then in the theatre of the eighteenth century Rotunda Buildings, the two founders, with Edwards as actor, producer and lighting expert, and MacLiammóir as star, costume and scenery designer, along with their supporting board of directors, gave Dublin, and other cities when touring, a long and eclectic list of plays. The Dublin Gate Theatre produced, with their imaginative and innovative style, over 400 different works from Sophocles, Shakespeare, Congreve, Chekhov, Ibsen, O’Neill, Wilde, Shaw, Yeats and many others. They also introduced plays from younger Irish playwrights such as Denis Johnston, Mary Manning, Maura Laverty, Brian Friel, Fr. Desmond Forristal and Micheál MacLiammóir himself. Until his death early in 1978, the year of the Gate’s 50th Anniversary, MacLiammóir wrote, as well as acted and designed for the Gate, plays, revues and three one-man shows, and translated and adapted those of other authors. -

He began work as a presenter on RTE's Youngline programme, then moved to Radio 2 as a reporter, before becoming a television continuity announcer and scriptwriter. Since leaving RTE, he has been involved in independent film and video production as well as lecturing in broadcasting. He now lives and works in the UK. Ad Hoc Committee Bill of Rights on the 15th April, 10am Conradh na Gaeilge Before I begin this discussion, I should mention, and I'm conscious of my colleagues and fellow activists who have been here in previous weeks giving evidence across a broad range of issues from social housing, the bill of rights, the LGBT community, the women's sector, and others. We are privileged to work alongside them as a part of the equality coalition and support the initiative for a rights-based return to the institutions and in the introduction of a Bill of Rights here in the north. As you know, the focus of our talk, discussion, and submission today relate to the question of language rights here in the context of a bill of rights. In the Good Friday Agreement of 1998, a new era of equality was promised for the Irish language in the north. Specific and strong commitments were given regarding the promotion and protection of the Irish language, including: In the context of active consideration currently being given to the UK signing the Council of Europe Charter for Regional or Minority Languages, the British Government will in particular in relation to the Irish language, where appropriate and where people so desire it: • take resolute action to promote the language; • facilitate and encourage the use of the language in speech and writing in public and private life where there is appropriate demand; • seek to remove, where possible, restrictions which would discourage or work against the maintenance or development of the language; • make provision for liaising -

It encompasses both the post-war theatre archives held by the British Library, and also their post-1968 scripts collection. In addition, many oral history interviews have been carried out with visitors and theatre practitioners. The Project began at the University of Sheffield and later transferred to De Montfort University. The archive at Sheffield contains 170 CD-ROMs of interviews with theatre workers and audience members, including Glenda Jackson, Brian Rix, Susan Engel and Michael Frayn. There is also a collection of copies of correspondence between Gyorgy Lengyel and Michel and Suria Saint Denis, and between Gyorgy Lengyel and Sir John Gielgud, dating from 1958 to 1999. PG: First of all, I’d really like to thank you for coming, and for taking out the time to take part in the Theatre Archive Project, Mr. Coulter. DC: My pleasure. PG: You had mentioned earlier that your main experience with theatre has been with Irish Drama. DC: Well, my initial experience was when I came here to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. When I was 18, I got a scholarship to do that. Then I did some work here in fact, as a student. I was able to watch from the wings - the chap who so sadly died recently - Paul Scofield. I carted the spears around off stage, when he was playing Hamlet, and The Power and the Glory, and King Lear at the Phoenix Theatre. I was hybridizing my time between school and watching this going on, which was a wonderful experience. It was a great time in theatre anyway in the 1950s. It was a transition time between the traditional three-act well-written play, and the sudden eruption of the Angry Young Men at the Royal Court, which I observed from where I lived, in the then very cheap place to get digs in Chelsea. -
