From 175-225 students annually enroll in online and on-campus study and the majority are working adults. This fall our student body of 176 consists of about one-third women and two-thirds men. Nearly 25% are online interna- tional students. Approximately 96% of our students study part-time. Of the 176 we have 8 on-campus students at Charlotte, 120 online and 48 auditors. Our enrollment is down a little over last year as the result of a renewed effort by state governments to regulate postsec- ondary institutions offering online education. Even though LU total enrollment did decline some this semester, we have achieved our second highest registration of “for-credit” stu- dents in our eleven year history. This is quite encouraging. In this premiere edition of the Pictorial we have included our Charlotte on-campus students, Adelaide in-residence students, our Early College Program students, the His- panic Cohort, all students enrolled for credit in courses offered during the Fall 2017 semester, and the faculty and staff of the University. In, addition, our student body has become more diverse as we have enrolled 66 international students (about 20 from Africa and 22 from Mexico, Central and South America) and 110 USA students (77 White, 7 Black or African American, 4 Hispanic and 22 Ethnicity Unknown). This fall we began offering selected courses in the Spanish language. Our first course is the Spanish language equivalent of THL 135 Life, Ministry and Teachings of Jesus initiated as THL 135S Vida, ministerio y enseñanzas de Jesucristo, to a cohort of 23 Spanish speaking elders, deacons and members primarily from Latin America. The University developed this program together with the LCG Spanish Department. THE PICTORIAL 2017 | 5 Although Living University programs continue to focus on theology and preparing for service those called by God to the ministry, LU has been expanding its curriculum to further develop student skills in business, communications and other disciplines. Living University has a general license from the State of North Carolina for its online programs and on-campus study at Charlotte. We can and do legally enroll students from any state for on-campus study and encourage our college-age youth and young adults to become on-campus students. This provides opportunity for our young people to complete their general education requirements, as they would in any college or university, as well as basic theology courses that challenge them to think critically about their faith, their place in the world and in God’s great plan for them. Overall, our main focus is to help students develop the character and basic skills that will make them successful in any field. Our heavy focus on service, leadership and character development provides all of our students with a strong underpinning of skills critical to becoming leaders in the workforce. 6 | THE PICTORIAL 2017 Charlotte On-Campus Students Truth Amedzekor (Junior) Travis Cole (Sophomore) Bria Martin (Sophomore) Mint Hill, NC Lenoir, NC Blue Springs, MO Travis Pate (Senior) Rebekah Ross (Postbaccalaureate) Kelsey Stevens (Senior) Lakewood, WA Dubuque, IA Merrill, WI Nathan Thomas (Postbaccalau- Ethan Williams (Freshman) reate) Zebulon, NC Charlotte, NC THE PICTORIAL 2017 | 7 Adelaide In-Residence Students Adam Jennings (Freshman) Timothy Mager (Postbaccalaureate) Adelaide, South Austrailia Adelaide, South Australia Early College Students at Charlotte Chloe Ciesielka (Freshman) Andrew McNair (Freshman) Tressie McNair (Freshman) Matthews, NC Indian Trail, NC Indian Trail, NC 8 | THE PICTORIAL 2017 The Hispanic Cohort Humberto Barraza Diego Beiserman Enrique Cattaneo Santiago, Chile Buenos Aires, Argentina Tierra del Fuego, Argentina Esdras Davila Darío Formichelli Edgar Guerra (Elder) Mexico City, Mexico Rosario, Argentina Medellín, Columbia Luis Guevara Tomás Jara Georges Jean-Pierre Nezahualcóyotl, Mexico Hueyusca, Chile Mexico City, Mexico THE PICTORIAL 2017 | 9 Samuel Lizama Hernán Lugo Ernesto Neri-Barrio San Salvador, El Salvador Lima, Peru Morelos, Mexico Abner Nuñez Armando Orrego (Elder) Gabriel Ortega (Elder) Madrid, Spain Medellin, Colombia Los Nogales, Mexico Danny Ralda Kened Roca Raúl Roca Coatepeque, Guatemala Mazatenango, Guatemala Mazatenango, Guatemala 10 | THE PICTORIAL 2017 Joel Tello Issachar Tenorio (Deacon) Roberto H. • What Motivated Terry Ratzmann's Shooting Spree in the Living
What Motivated Terry Ratzmann’s Shooting Spree in the Living Church of God? Peter Ditzel On March 12, 2005, 44-year-old Terry Ratzmann walked into the services of the Living Church of God. They were being held in the Sheraton Hotel near Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Ratzmann stood near the back of the room where he was spotted by 12-year-old Robert Geiger. The boy later described Ratzmann, whom he had known most of his life, as looking enraged, and "his eyes were real dark." Robert also saw Ratzmann’s gun. Ratzmann opened fire with a 9mm handgun. He fired 22 shots, immediately killing four people. One bullet was intended for Robert, but the bullet whizzed past his face. Ratzmann ended the shooting spree by killing himself. Three more people died in hospital. Police have still not figured out Ratzmann’s motive. At first, they focused on the possibility that Ratzmann was about to lose his job. This now turns out not to be the case. He was near the end of a temporary assignment through an employment firm, and would likely have received a new assignment. Police and media at first assumed the Living Church of God to be an evangelical church. But both have now finally realized that the Living Church of God is no ordinary church. They now believe that Ratzmann’s motives were directly connected with the church. The Living Church of God is one of the most extreme of the many offshoots of the Worldwide Church of God, a church founded in the 1930s by the late Herbert W.

  • LU Newsletter for Students, Alumni and Friends of Living University
LU Newsletter For Students, Alumni and Friends of Living University June 15, 2017 From the President’s Desk Greetings again dear friends. This is our final newsletter for this academic year. On May 15, we honored our class of 2017 at our ninth commencement graduating 20 students. I would like to share with you my opening ceremony remarks. My intent was to remind everyone of our important educational mission, even though LU is a very small facet of God’s Great Work, by reviewing some of the basic principles on which Dr. Roderick C. Meredith and his fellow leaders founded the University. As we did at Commencement, let us reflect on them for a few moments. First, “The Word of God is the Foundation of Knowledge.” Seventy years ago Herbert and Loma Armstrong were busy preparing to open Ambassador College in Pasadena, California with the hallmark motto of “Recapture the true values.” Classes began in October of 1947 after great struggle. Ambassador College was our antecedent. Ambassador set the norm and established our overall approach to God-centered education for Christian life and service. Second, very importantly, Living University is God’s university, as Ambassador College was God’s college. Neither was a work of men. The Lord has built the house–our effort as weary laborers has not been in vain. The fruit of our labors includes touching the lives of over 1,000 students, and certainly our fine graduates, since our founding. Living, as known in higher education educational circles, is God’s very own university. Third, our charge is to “Recapture True Values” in all we do by internalizing and demonstrating our core values of Leadership, Service, Commitment, Integrity, Excellence, Culture, and Creativity.

  • Sabbath Vs. Sunday: the Rest of the Story
SABBATH VS . SUNDAY : THE REST OF THE STORY “Deception”: Christians war over worship day Centuries-old clash continues over disputed commandment By Joe Kovacs – WorldNetDaily – March 16, 2008 Two thousand years after Jesus walked the Earth, Christians are at war with each other concerning – as strange as it may sound – a day of the week mentioned in the Ten Commandments. The issue boils down to: "When is God's Sabbath?" In other words, what is His holy day of rest? Most Christians today think it's Sunday, when the majority of churches hold services. But others confidently say it's Saturday, calling This sign at the Mesa Avenue Church of Christ in Grand Junction, Colo., is typical of Sunday worship "the most flagrant error of churches announcing their worship services mainstream Christianity," believing Sunday-keepers on Sunday. are victims of clever deception. Some high-profile evangelical pastors such as California's Greg Laurie say it's simply "wrong to set Saturday apart as a special day for worship." Today, some high-school sports teams refuse to play in state tournaments for the sole reason the events are held on Saturday – what they say is God's Sabbath. Conversely, the 1981 film "Chariots of Fire" was based on the true story of Eric Liddell, a Scottish sprinter and Christian missionary who disqualified himself from his best event at the 1924 Olympics because the race was on Sunday – the Sabbath in his view. Christians seem irreparably split, as this issue goes back to the beginning of time itself. In the beginning ... There are seven days in a week, but historians have no consensus Scottish sprinter about the cycle's origin, since it has no basis in astronomy.

The Church: The ecclesia, Literally: the out-called-ones… WE ARE THE CHURCH! THE LOVE of HIS LIFE! WE ARE The Church; the ecclesia, this word is used 109 times in the New Testament. In Matthew 18: Jesus says, Where 2 or 3 gather in My name, there I am in the midst of them; and it’s interesting, most of the time, the early church met in homes. In the Gospel, only Matthew records Jesus using the word 3 times. John Tyndale first translated this word: congregation, we translate it: assembly. In Matthew 16. Then, twice in Matthew 18:15-17 Jesus also said: 15 Also, if your brother steps over the line against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone: if he will hear you, you have gained your brother. 16 But if he will not hear, take one or two more with you, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. 17 And if he neglects to hear them, tell the church [the one Jesus just said He was building: notice, His disciples were not confused about where to find His church]: but if he neglects to hear the church… [the only church that Jesus is building… even where 2 or 3 gather], let him be to you as a heathen man and a publican. The next time we read about the ecclesia in scripture is: Acts 2:47… And the Lord added to the church [He is building] daily such as should be saved. ecclesia used 17 more times in the book of Acts.
