KARMEIER FAX (615)327 9756 March 16, 201$ Mr. Sean Nelson Executive Director Illinois YMCA Youth and Government Dear Mr. Nelson: On behalf of the Supreme Court of Illinois, I am pleased to welcome to Springfield and to the Supreme Court Building the participants in the 69th Youth and Government Assembly. The Supreme Court Building, which we have occupied for more than a century, has always been a source of pride for the people of Illinois, not only because of its beauty and tradition, but also because of the important work that is done here. It was rededicated in 2014 after a major restoration project. I am pleased that the participants will be able to see the impressive courtroom, the inspiring artwork, and the many architectural details that make it so special. Inside the Supreme Court Courtroom, one will find three Latin words written above the main entrance: audi alieram partern. They mean “to hear the other side.” They are carved above the door on the inside so that they can be seen by the Justices as we are seated on the bench, listening to the parties’ arguments. They remind us of our duty to give fair and objective consideration to both sides of every case. As the participants work together during the Youth and Govenm-ient program, I urge them to keep those simple words in mind. Maintaining an open mind and giving fair consideration to opposing points of view is important, not only in the judicial process, hut also in every workplace, every classroom, and in every family and friendship. Be open to persuasion, even as you defend your own position. Be willing to accept that those who disagree with you may have something valuable to teach you. Above all, learn to disagree without being disagreeable. If we lose our capacity for civility and mutual respect, intolerance and mistrust will inevitably follow. With all best wishes for a successful program. VeryLQAtruly yours, -- ILLINOIS YMCA YOUTH AND GOVERNMENT SPRINGFIELD ASSEMBLY STATE OF ILLINOIS OFFICIALS BRUCE RAUNER EVELYN SANGUINETTI MICHAEL J.
