NAGPUR: At a time when Indian Railways is facing a financial crisis, South East Central Railway (SECR) seems to be adding to it by giving stoppages to trains even at stations where there are no earnings. The trains are being halted on demand by politicians.

According to information available with TOI, SECR granted 49 stoppages to passenger trains on experimental basis at various stations under the SECR zone comprising Nagpur, Bilaspur and Raipur divisions.

However, of these 49 stoppages, 42 are non-feasible giving almost nil or very poor returns. Some stations where stoppages have been given have zero ticket sale. SECR has not only given stoppage at these stations but has also extended it by six months till June 30, 2013. It states that stoppages should be granted at stations where at least 40 sleeper Railway bosses hint at 3rd line to ease congestion class tickets are sold and earnings are between Rs4,376 and Rs5,396 each day. At Salka Road it is .05 tickets with an Railway Board earning of Rs5 per day. In Karkeli, ticket sale is .30, an earning of Rs30 whereas in Mulmarora only one ticket is sold. Stations Secr If stations in the region are considered, at Wadsa in Gadchiroli district, average of one ticket is being sold and Amgaon near two tickets. Tumsar and Tiroda have a sale of 21 and 11 tickets respectively, much better compared to other stations but still not up to the mark set by the Railway Board.

"The SECR is not considering the demand to stop Express at potential stations like Tiroda and Kamptee but stoppages are granted at non-feasible stations. The issue had figured in zonal railway users consultative committee (ZRUCC) on Tuesday at Bilaspur," said Pravin Dabli, a ZRUCC member.

Dabli added the officials refer to Railway Board circular when it comes to stoppage of Vidarbha Express at Tiroda and Kamptee on experimental basis but trains are routinely being stopped at other places with no earnings.

SECR's chief commercial manager (CCF) P R Vazalwar said trains stoppages are granted on public demand based on representations by local leaders. The Railway Board criterion is for granting permanent stoppages and not on experimental basis. Dabli demanded that some unjustified stoppages of existing trains should be withdrawn and Vidarbha Express should be halted at Kamptee and Tiroda. Maruti Alto 800 Diesel Price CarTrade.com/Maruti_Alto_800_Prices Planning to Buy a Maruti Car? Get Comparison, Reviews, Specs & more.

windglide (Earth) 01 Nov, 2012 09:58 PM tickets may be albooked from other stations as there may not be computerized reservation facilty. also one stop adds merely five minutes and no loss of revenue as otherwise train slow down or stop for signals, mumbai mail via allahabd has more stops than mahanagari express but travelling time is lesser. the same also hold as punjab mail has more halts than zhelum but is faster. places like tumsar very famous forr trade of rice as learnt in school. trains do not stop on central raiway in maharshtra at imortant taluka and holy pilgrimage place akkalkot. Also it is not possible to provide day express trains on tracks like mumbai -pune for operational reasons and even if they exist railway should allow ii class day sleeper unreesrved tickets with 25% extra fare than ii cllass as sleeper can easily accomdate 20 extra passengers, and this mitiagtes one draw back of rail transport that frequency is lesser compared to road. moreover if this is not allowed upcountry trains will ply on tracks like mumbai -pune without serving intercity passengers and this may crowd day intercity trains more and in the end passengers will shift to road.

Exactly! In my journey on the SECR section of Nagpur-Bilaspur and beyond I have seen many premium trains have been given halt at not-so-important stations. E.g. Gitanjali Express is halting at Dongargarh and Tumsar Rd. whereas many superfast trains are stopping at Kamptee and Kanhan.

Think (Nagpur) 01 Nov, 2012 11:01 AM It's all corruption! Even if trains are not stopped officially, some daily wagers who do up-down from rural areas to Nagpur will pull the chain to get down. All the trains coming from Delhi to Nagpur are stopped at Godhni by pulling chains as this is not an official stop. People don't afford to pay for general tickets. It is high time Central Railway and SECR start local trains (DEMU, MEMU, MMTS) in Nagpur for distances upto 50 kms. Metro rail will take at least 10 years, but local trains can be started easily!

Bager Tickat (Dabbe ke Baahar) 01 Nov, 2012 09:42 AM I have seen with my own eyes many many people boarding trains from these stations. What the information dug out through RTI means is that these people are either not buying tickets at all, are conniving with TTEs and paying them off directly, or have season tickets. The second option is the most likely one as many trains with officially only 5% occupancy are often full, with money going into TTE pockets. And since a percentage of that money is passed on to the TTE's bosses, ultimately all the way up to divisional level officers, the charade continues.
