Scott is still working on the club going to Wind Crest Living Communities for lunch in January. Scott also said the club received a check for a bit over $1,900 from International for the Early Bird registration program.

Jim Rees reported that we did not meet the required quota for the King Soopers program.

Ken Kelley made one of his yearly appearances today to pitch a fund raiser (for his daughter), frozen pies, and he will deliver them next week or if you prefer, at your house but then you would have to give him your address and who would want to do that.

Tim Pollak is looking for a replacement for the Celebrate Sound meeting but the location has not been set yet. Ken or Scott may be able to attend. Tim also has the new Directories.

Tim also pitched his wife’s sorority’s Christmas Tree tour at a private residence in Castle Rock as a fund raising event for her sorority. Dec. 14th from noon to 4pm at a cost of $10. See Tim if interested.

Linda Holloway popped in to say Thanks for our club’s support of Bessie’s Hope and to confirm we have representatives for several committees.

“The King” kept it very short today, not sure why but he reminded us of the upcoming Club Christmas Party to be held at the Buell Mansion (again) on Dec. 13th and the cost has gone up to $49.50 per person due to (wait for it)…..Obama Care………..don’t ask. It is a BYOB event but DON’T BRING RED WINE or you will have to pull up the very expensive carpet. The event starts at 6pm for drinkies. Orian will provide the mixes for you. 7pm is eaties time.

Remember, if you bring in a new member and he stays 6 months, you get Free Dues - per new member for a quarter.

If you think you are the SOD more than once a year, you are correct. With only 36 active members of the attendance list, you get to remind us more often about your life’s achievements. If you don’t want to be the SOD so often, I guess we need to get more members.

Sertoman of the Day: Bill Benton (Mr. Tooth Pick), is a Denver native - entering the scene Sunday, October 14, 1928 during the depression, coming in at 7lbs 1 oz. He went through Mitchell Elementary, Cole Jr. High and Graduated from Manual High School, all in Denver – joined the Navy in 1946 and served for 3 years, 2 months as a photographer, and was stationed on Guam for about 21 months and returned to Denver and graduated from the University of Denver in 1954 on the GI Bill. He then went to work for Bear Frame and Axle.

Bill married Betty in 1954 (who passed away in 1995, the day after Christmas). Daughter Cindy is retired from Metro West Fire, and a son still flying the nation’s air routes with United. Bill also has a granddaughter that is 25 and a snowboarder ski bum. She moved to the mountains to be close to the slopes.

Bill has peddled cars for Burt Chevy since 1964 but the dealer is been sold so every day Bill goes to work, he looks at the sign out front. He claims to have sold over 23,000 cars and still going. He was asked if he held the title of being the longest employee at Burt but he isn’t, he is real close though. Burt is now owned by John Elway. Bill had a ‘significant other’ Gail, whom passed away in 2012. Bill was brought into Sertoma by Bill Anderson, some 37 plus years ago, back in the days when we met at Wyatt’s cafeteria. He’s been a consistent and faithful doer of good deeds ever since. Listen to BillBenton.mp3

Program: John Vierthaler, wearing his own Badge this week, introduced Richard Nelson, an author that wrote a book about the history of East High School called “Flights of Angels: A History of Denver East High School 1874-2004”.

What do Judy Collins, Douglas Fairbanks Sr., and `Happy' Haynes have in common? How about Sidney Sheldon, Jack Swigert, and Marilyn Van Derbur? All of them--together with Thomas Hornsby Ferrill, Don Cheadle, Steve and Bill McNichols, and three of the founding members of Earth, Wind, and Fire--attended East High School in Denver.

In the early days of East High School, students were challenged to aspire to an `Aristocracy of Service'. For more than 130 years, this school has turned out its share of celebrities, leading citizens, and thousands of productive young people into a world of challenge and opportunity.
