TL along road and as bridge crosses river there are FPs leading up to PRoW through forestry SO040162. TR along PRoW CB 315 and follow to reservoir wall SO029179. TL CB 258 and follow FP up ridge and to trig point on Twyn Mwylachod SO021176. 2. At Twyn Mwylachod TR CB 348 and follow FP along ridge to the col at Bwlch Duwynt SO005209 and the major JNCT. Continue CB 020 up to Corn DDu SO007213. At Corn Ddu TR CB 065 and follow PRoW to Pen y Fan SO011215. At Pen y Fan TR CB 122 and follow PRoW to descend and BL CB 078 at col past pond to ascend Cribyn SO023213. 3. On Cribyn TR CB 160 and follow PRoW along edge BL to descend to Bwlch ar y Fan SO031205. Continue with PRoW CB 085 to ascend Fan y Big SO036206. At Fan y Big TR CB 165 and follow PRoW to Gwaun Cerrig Llwydion SO041196. BL CB 035 and follow FP/PRoW along Craig Cwareli and TR CB 105 along Bwlch y Ddwyallt SO050204. 4. From Bwlch y Ddwyallt continue around BL along ridge to JNCT in col SO057205. In col at JNCT TR CB 150 and EITHER stay up high on FP OR take lower FP to aircraft crash memorial SO061200; from memorial you will need to climb back up to top FP. Continue with FP along Cwar y Gigfan ridge to cairn SO066192 on Gwalciau’r Cwm. TR and follow spur down CB 215 to stream SO065189 then come round to CB 180 down spur and up to Allt Forgan SO066177. 5. From Allt Forgan - EITHER take FP down CB 215 to stream head SO063175 where it BL CB 165 to edge of forestry SO064173 and woodland. It shortly does a TR through woodland then a BL to come down to road SO063170. At road TR then TL SO062170 CB 132 along track to edge of foresty and stream SO065167. TR CB 218 and follow stream up to main track/PRoW SO064165 and TR CB 305. Follow to road SO054174 1 - OR take FP down CB 215 to stream head SO063175 then TR CB 240 down to FB SO060174. Cross and follow FP CB 255 up to main track. Cross and continue on small FP CB 290 alongside waterfalls to Blaen y Glyn CP SO055175. 6. At road TL and follow to JNCT with track SO049167. TR along track and almost immediately BL at JNCT SO048567 CB 225 and follow track back to CP. 2 Glossary BL - Bear Left BR - Bear Right CB - Compass Bearing FB – Footbridge FP - Footpath. Usually marked on 1:25 but not on 1:50 JNCT - Junction (paths/tracks cross/join) OA – Open Access PRoW - Public Right of Way. Usually marked on 1:25 and 1:50 Quad bike track - Two parallel lines going across the fell made by continued use by quad bike RHS – Right hand side LHS – Left hand side TL - Turn Left TR - Turn Right Track - A wide track that looks suitably for 4x4 vehicles 3 .

Pen y Fan sits in a cluster of other peaks including Corn Du, Cribyn and Fan y Big, so most of them can be climbed in a single walk. These are the main 'Beacons' in the Brecon Beacons. A mixture of current and some former members of the Club met at Nuala’s house near Bryncrug for a camping meet and barbeque. While most arrived on Friday night a number of members, particularly those with families, arrived at various times on Saturday. We experienced a variety of weather conditions with high winds and thunder and lightning on Friday. Fortunately all managed to get their tents up before the bad weather arrived. It was rather wet and miserable on Saturday morning so a mass ascent of Cadair Idris via the pony track was abandoned as was climbing on the Cyfrwy arête. However, I understand that a couple of hardy souls did complete the climb in the wet.

We challenge you to keep a straight face all weekend as we explore two different (and unforgettable) parts of the Brecon Beacons National Park - after all, mountains aren’t funny, they’re hill areas… Jokes aside, we take safety very seriously and we’ll be accompanied by qualified walk leaders at all times. On saturday morning we’ll meet at the foot of the Black Mountains and spend most of the day winding up and across the mountain range to the top of Lord Hereford’s Knob at 690m, also known as Twmpa. The footpaths in this area provide excellent walking across high ridges and superb edges, from which we’ll get great views of Herefordshire and the Wye Valley to the east and see out across the rest of the Brecon Beacons to the west. Although these routes are popular in summer, by going at this time of year we’ll avoid the tourists and hopefully get the magnificent scenery all to ourselves! In the evening we’ll drop our day packs off at our cosy bunkhouse in the centre of the National Park and head to a great local pub across the road to replenish ourselves with a hot meal.

Cross the dam and climb a steep ascent to Twyn Mwyalchod trig point (642m). Follow the ridge along Craig Fan Ddu and Craig Gwaun Taf towards Bwlch Duwynt below Corn Du. Ascend Corn Du (873m) then onto Pen y Fan (886m). Descend from Pen y Fan via Jacobs Ladder along Craig Cwm Sere before climbing up to the top of Cribyn (795m). Follow the gentle decline off Cribyn, along Craig Cwm Cynwyn to meet a track at Bwlch ar y Fan (The Gap). Ascend Fan y Big (719m) to the Diving Board. All of the walks will end in Ledbury. Social events There will be a skittles evening on Thursday 18th October at the Eastfield Inn, Henleaze from 7.30-11pm. Do join us for a fun evening, with buffet. Tickets will be available during September, either on a walk or by contacting Paula at [email protected]. They will be priced at £12, to include food and exclusive use of skittles alley. C the World and Ramblers Walking Holidays are hosting a social evening at Henbury Golf Club on Thursday, 6th September 6:30pm - 8:30 pm, with wine, soft drinks and nibbles.
