This anthology is the second publication in the scholarly series MusPed:Research and concerns the field of higher education. The anthology consists of 14 chapters, arranged under the following themes: (i) instrumental music education, (ii) group-oriented and interdisciplin- ary music education, and (iii) critical examination of music teacher edu- cation programs. Before describing the specific chapters, we will first comment on the title of the anthology. These comments, divided into two parts, are contextually and linguistically oriented towards the growth and development of music educational disciplines in Scandinavian, German, and Anglo-American contexts. The second part has the title “Music Pedagogy Research”, and builds on the perspectives of Bildung and Didaktik in German/Scandinavian fields within Musikpädagogische Forschung/ musikkpedagogisk forskning. Higher Education as Context Higher music education is organized through a range of disciplines and educational programs and takes place at institutions such as music acad- emies, universities, university colleges, and teacher education programs. In these contexts, music (as a subject in higher education) is focused and understood differently – for example, as performance music studies, as science-oriented studies, or as one of several issues for lifelong learning or community building. From this, there can be huge variations in norms and ways to assess quality, among the different educational- and research cultures. Some research and knowledge development are published as articles in international, peer-reviewed journals, while other research ends up in performance, with concerts, videos, and sound production. The series MusPed:Research is targeted toward the intersection between the many disciplines, educational contexts, and research traditions in the manifold field of music education. As a contribution to grasping the broad field of knowledge, expertise, and identities, a short description is provided of some of the main institutionalized divisions within the disci- plines of higher music education. Musikwissenschaft (Eng: musicology, No: musikkvitenskap) arose as an independent field of knowledge and research in Germany in the last part of the 19th century. An example is Adler’s seminal book from 1885, Umfang, Methode und Ziel der Musikwissenschaft. Originally, this knowledge field was focused on analyses and understandings of Western classical music. Today, this field includes a range of approaches and foci, for example eth- nomusicology, popular musicology, early music performance, music psy- chology, music philosophy, and music history (Nettl, 2001; Ruud, 2016). Ruud (2016) also positioned the areas of music therapy, music sociology, and music education within the field of musicology, and hence placed context-oriented and practice-oriented approaches to music within the 8 HIGHER E D U C AT I O N AS CONTEXT FOR MUSIC PEDAGOGY RESEARCH musicological field of education and research. Context-oriented and rela- tion-oriented approaches to music are also labeled as music anthropology (Blacking, 1976) and concern music not only as a “thing” but also as an activity or practice oriented toward nurturing relations and communities (Bartleet & Higgins, 2018; Elliot, 1995; Small, 1998), and are approaches that have influenced the wider field of music education research (DeNora, 2003; Wright, 2016). According to Nettl (2001), musicology is a field of knowledge “distinguished from other humanistic disciplines in its theo- retical (if not always de facto) inclusion

    PORVOO PRAYER DIARY 2021 The Porvoo Declaration commits the churches which have signed it ‘to share a common life’ and ‘to pray for and with one another’. An important way of doing this is to pray through the year for the Porvoo churches and their Dioceses. The Prayer Diary is a list of Porvoo Communion Dioceses or churches covering each Sunday of the year, mindful of the many calls upon compilers of intercessions, and the environmental and production costs of printing a more elaborate list. Those using the calendar are invited to choose one day each week on which they will pray for the Porvoo churches. It is hoped that individuals and parishes, cathedrals and religious orders will make use of the Calendar in their own cycle of prayer week by week. In addition to the churches which have approved the Porvoo Declaration, we continue to pray for churches with observer status. Observers attend all the meetings held under the Agreement. Martin Lönnebo, Swedish Bishop Emeritus, General Synod 2007 The Lutheran Church of Norway is the state church of Norway with 3.9 million members and 1,285 parishes throughout the country. It has belonged to the Evangelical Lutheran branch of the Christian Church since the 16th century. In 2007, its General Synod recognised the need for a profound change in the basic values, attitudes and behaviour of individuals and society in order to address the threat from climate change. It recognised that the Church has a particular responsibility in this process of change and concluded that there needs to be a new and profound reform in the Lutheran Church of Norway. The following 10-year plan for action from 2007-2017 is a result of this. It challenges the Church’s national and diocesan councils, parishes, individuals, and the government and parliament respectively. The 2008 General Synod again discussed the issue and it was decided that the 10- year reform should be carried out as an ecumenical project, with the Christian Council of Norway and the Norwegian Church Aid as key partners.

Fortunately Dave has become quite the expert. We went to Decorah’s Nordic Fest and Cashton’s Fall Festival parades. We will also be in the Octoberfest parade. Anyone willing to be in the float or walk along with it, please let us know. It is a fun time and the more the merrier. It is time for next year’s officer slate to be introduced, hopefully very soon. Please be willing to serve in an officer position if asked or even better, volunteer. There are many opportunities for officers. It is also one way of learning what a great organization we are involved in. From the historic play «Spelet om Heilag Olav” at Stiklestad 2018. The play is presenting the historical background with the confrontation between traditional Nordic religion and Christianity, where also fighting over power is part of it. The confrontation lead to the battle at Stiklestad where King Olav Haraldson was killed. 2 The Cathedral Nidarosdomen, built from around 1070 A.D. over the first grave of St Olav. This is the major cathedral in Norway, an important holy place where pilgrims have come from far through the centuries. These days pilgrims still come, and for the last few decades in increasing numbers. “When water disappears” A seminar by Norwegian Church Aid On the background of last winter’s dramatic situation on water supply in Cape Town, South Africa, NCA arranged a seminar on the serious consequences of climate change. Climate change is already dramatically affecting a huge amount of people around the world, and mostly the poorest. Three religious’ actors with the acting General Secretary of NCA gave their views and recommendations for needs and ways to act, to prevent further climate change. The speakers were: Bishop Geoff Davis from South Africa, Farhan Shah at Faculty of Theology, University of Oslo working on modern Islamic Philosophy and Theology, Bishop Herborg Finnset, Diocese of Nidaros, and Lisa Sivertsen, acting General Secretary, Norwegian Church Aid. They all focused on the urgency of stopping the global warming.
