    CAST BIOS TOM RILEY (Leonardo da Vinci) Tom has been seen in a variety of TV roles, recently portraying Dr. Laurence Shepherd opposite James Nesbitt and Sarah Parish in ITV1’s critically acclaimed six-part medical drama series “Monroe.” Tom has completed filming the highly anticipated second season which premiered autumn 2012. In 2010, Tom played the role of Gavin Sorensen in the ITV thriller “Bouquet of Barbed Wire,” and was also cast in the role of Mr. Wickham in the ITV four-part series “Lost in Austen,” alongside Hugh Bonneville and Gemma Arterton. Other television appearances include his roles in Agatha Christie’s “Poirot: Appointment with Death” as Raymond Boynton, as Philip Horton in “Inspector Lewis: And the Moonbeams Kiss the Sea” and as Dr. James Walton in an episode of the BBC series “Casualty 1906,” a role that he later reprised in “Casualty 1907.” Among his film credits, Tom played the leading roles of Freddie Butler in the Irish film Happy Ever Afters, and the role of Joe Clarke in Stephen Surjik’s British Comedy, I Want Candy. Tom has also been seen as Romeo in St Trinian’s 2: The Legend of Fritton’s Gold alongside Colin Firth and Rupert Everett and as the lead role in Santiago Amigorena’s A Few Days in September. Tom’s significant theater experiences originate from numerous productions at the Royal Court Theatre, including “Paradise Regained,” “The Vertical Hour,” “Posh,” “Censorship,” “Victory,” “The Entertainer” and “The Woman Before.” Tom has also appeared on stage in the Donmar Warehouse theatre’s production of “A House Not Meant to Stand” and in the Riverside Studios’ 2010 production of “Hurts Given and Received” by Howard Barker, for which Tom received outstanding reviews and a nomination for best performance in the new Off West End Theatre Awards.

The Baker Street Irregulars' Distinguished Speaker at the Midtown Executive Club on Thursday evening was Dr. Lisa Sanders, author of a "Diagnosis" col- umn for the N.Y. Times and the technical advisor for the television series "House, M.D."; the title of her talk was "Is Holmes Crazy As a Fox, or Just Plain Crazy?", and you will be able to read her paper in the next issue of The Baker Street Journal. The William Gillette Luncheon at Moran's was well attended, as always, and featured Donny Zaldin and Hartley Nathan in a Sherlockian "Carnac the Mag- nificent" skit and the Friends of Bogie's at Baker Street (Paul Singleton, Sarah Montague, and Andrew Joffe) in a Sherlockian tribute to the centenary of the sinking of the Titanic. The luncheon also was the occasion for Al Gregory's presentation of the annual Jan Whimsey award (named in memory of his wife Jan Stauber) for the most whimsical piece in The Serpentine Muse last year; the winner (Karen Murdock, author of "Do You Write Like Arthur Conan Doyle?") received a certificate and a check for the Canonical sum of $221.17.

    PRODUCTION NOTES Underworld: Blood Wars, the newest installment of the blockbuster franchise, finds Vampire Death Dealer Selene (Kate Beckinsale) fending off brutal attacks from both the Lycan clan and the Vampire faction that has betrayed her. Aided by her only allies, David (Theo James) and his father Thomas (Charles Dance), she must end the eternal war between Lycans and Vampires, even if it means making the ultimate sacrifice. The fifth film in the hugely successful action-horror series picks up the action where Underworld Awakening left off. The Lycans have found a powerful new leader in Marius (Tobias Menzies), who has injected a fanatical sense of purpose and discipline into their previously ragtag ranks. Marius will stop at nothing to track down Selene in order to learn the whereabouts of her daughter Eve, a Vampire-Lycan hybrid.     ISSN 1653-2244 INSTITUTIONEN FÖR KULTURANTROPOLOGI OCH ETNOLOGI DEPARTMENT OF CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY AND ETHNOLOGY Stories of Significance: The Process and Practices of Sense- Making in the Sherlock Fan Community By Kee Lundqvist 2015 MASTERUPPSATSER I KULTURANTROPOLOGI Nr 54 Stories of Significance The Process and Practices of Sense-Making in the Sherlock Fan Community Abstract Building on professor of psychology Kenneth Pargament‘s claim that people actively seek to establish a sense of significance and strive to minimize its loss, this study argues that fans of fictional works continually create a (subjectively seemingly) coherent interpretation of the source text that both builds upon and supports meaningful themes and phenomena found in the text. This, in turn, generates a subjective (though often communally negotiated) sense of significance. However, such meaningful/meaning-creating interpretations – and thus the sense of significance generated by them – are constantly running the risk of being disturbed by new information or perspectives that contradict them. This risk is particularly high when the source text is still evolving, as in the case of a current book series or TV-show, which necessitates an on-going process of interpretation and coping. In this thesis I examine how a sense of significance is formed and maintained by fans of an evolving text by studying the various interpretative strategies employed by fans of the BBC TV series Sherlock. Combining in-depth interviews with data from a three-month participant observation of fan interactions primarily but not exclusively on the social network platform site Tumblr, this study aims both to deepen the understanding of some of the psychological mechanisms behind the creation, negotiation and transformation of meaning, and to examine its expressions in a specific case.
