Did you find the activity easy or difficult? Why? Each addition of an animal, or member of the food web, adds another layer of complexity. It is easy to see how each member of the food web has an important role to play and is connected by what they eat. 2. Once you have the food web complete, remove the Krill. Without krill, what do you think will happen to the Salmon? Krill is a type of animal plankton, or zooplankton, and serves as a critical foundation to the food web for many predators including whales, seals, and fish. By removing krill, animals such as the salmon or blue whales would lose their primary food source and disappear. This would create a “domino effect” where we would then see the animals that depend on salmon, such as the orca, also disappear and so forth. 3. Which member of this food web do you think has the greatest impact on the health of this entire ecosystem? Why? As we saw from removing the krill in the previous scenario, without foundational members of the food web such as phytoplankton or krill the food web collapses. For this reason, they could be considered the most impactful on the ecosystem. However, it is important to note that by removing top predators, such as the Orca, who plays a key role in maintaining prey species from growing out of control would also create a large impact.     Preliminary Report CHAPTER 20: PROTECTING MARINE MAMMALS AND ENDANGERED MARINE SPECIES Protection for marine mammals and endangered or threatened species from direct impacts has increased since the enactment of the Marine Mammal Protection Act in 1972 and the Endangered Species Act in 1973. However, lack of scientific data, confusion about permitting requirements, and failure to adopt a more ecosystem-based management approach have created inconsistent and inefficient protection efforts, particularly from indirect and cumulative impacts. Consolidating and coordinating federal jurisdictional authorities, clarifying permitting and review requirements for activities that may impact marine mammals and endangered or threatened species, increasing scientific research and public education, and actively pursuing international measures to protect these species are all improvements that will promote better stewardship of marine mammals, endangered or threatened species, and the marine ecosystem. ASSESSING THE THREATS TO MARINE POPULATIONS Because of their intelligence, visibility and frequent interactions with humans, marine mammals hold a special place in the minds of most people. Little wonder, then, that mammals are afforded a higher level of protection than fish or other marine organisms. They are, however, affected and harmed by a wide range of human activities. The biggest threat to marine mammals worldwide today is their accidental capture or entanglement in fishing gear (known as “bycatch”), killing hundreds of thousands of animals a year.1 Dolphins, porpoises and small whales often drown when tangled in a net or a fishing line because they are not able to surface for air. Even large whales can become entangled and tow nets or other gear for long periods, leading to the mammal’s injury, exhaustion, or death.

    Krill Oil and Astaxanthin Krill are small reddish-color crustaceans, similar to shrimp, that abound in cold Arctic waters. They survive in such cold, frigid temperatures because of their natural anti- freeze, the polyunsaturated fatty acids EPA and DHA. EPA and DHA are bound to molecules called phospholipids (especially phosphatidyl choline) that act to help transport nutrients into cells and change the structure of animal cell membranes. Studies show that these combined fatty acids have better absorption into the cell membranes throughout the body, especially the brain, as compared to other types of fish oils. Although it has less EPA/DHA content than most fish oils, krill oil seems to be almost twice as absorbable. Unlike fish oil, krill oil also contains a very potent antioxidant, astaxanthin, which helps prevent krill oil from oxidizing (turning rancid). Astaxanthin is a red pigment found in different types of algae and phytoplankton. It is astaxanthin that gives salmon and trout their reddish color. It is considered to be one of the most potent natural antioxidants, almost 50 times stronger than beta-carotenes found in fruits and vegetables and 65 times better as an anti-oxidant than vitamin C. Krill oil is composed of 40% phospholipids, 30% EPA and DHA, astaxanthin, vitamin A, vitamin C, various other fatty acids, and flavanoids (anti-oxidant compounds) Human studies indicate krill oil is powerful at decreasing inflammation throughout the body, especially in the brain. It reduces C-reactive protein, a marker for heart disease. Tests indicate it has a powerful anti-inflammatory remedy for rheumatoid as well as osteoarthritis.

These organisms are known to inhabit oceans and seas, as well as estuaries, and are distributed from the polar to the tropical regions. These organisms are the top predators in many ocean food webs except the sirenians, which are herbivores. However, cetaceans become the dominant group of marine mammals, as well as widest geographic range. Marine mammals have been deemed “invaluable components” of the naval force as their natural senses are superior to technology in rough weather and noisy areas. India, with a rich diversity of marine mammals has a history of documenting these animals for the last 200 years. Published reports indicate that only a few scientific studies have addressed the distribution of marine mammals in the Indian EEZ, and there exist huge lacunae on the baseline information such as abundance and density for many species due to limited resources and lack of systematic surveys.

Abstract The stomach contents of 63 southern bluefin tuna captured by Taiwanese longliners in central Indian Ocean in August 2004 were examined. The size of tunas ranged from 84-187 cm FL (12-115 kg GG). The length and weight frequency distributions indicated that most specimens were in the range of 100-130 cm FL with a body weight between 10 and 30 kg for both sexes. The sexes- combined relationship between dressed weight and fork length can be described by W = 6.975× 10-6× FL3.1765 (n=56, r2=0.967, p < 0.05). The subjective index of fullness of specimens was estimated as: 1 = empty (38.6%), 2 = <half full (47.37%), 3 = half full (3.51%), 4 = >half full (5.26%), and 5 = full (5.26%). For the stomachs with prey items, almost all the preys are pisces and the proportion of each prey groups are fishes (95.6%), cephalopods (2.05%), and crustaceans (0.02%). In total, 6 prey taxa were identified – 4 species of fish, 1 unidentified pisces, 1 unidentified crustacean, and 1 unidentified squid. The 4 fish species fall in the family of Carangidae, Clupeidae, Emmelichthyidae, and Hemiramphidae.
