ABRACADABRA: KEY AGENTS OF MEDIATION THAT DEFINE, CREATE, AND MAINTAIN TV FANDOM by DAVID H. GARDNER Under the Direction of Dr. Alisa Perren ABSTRACT From a media industries, fan studies, and emerging socio-cultural public relations perspective, this project pulls back the Hollywood curtain to explore two questions: 1) How do TV public relations practitioners and key tastemaker/gatekeeper media define, create, build, and maintain fandom?; and 2) How do they make meaning of fandom and their agency/role in fan creation from their position of industrial producers, cultural intermediaries, members of the audience, and as fans themselves? This project brings five influential, working public relations and media professionals into a conversation about two case studies from the 2010-2011 television season – broadcast network CBS’ Hawaii Five-0 and basic cable network AMC’s The Walking Dead. Each of these shows speaks to fandom in particular ways and are representative of the industry’s current approaches in luring specific audiences to TV. -

Report Creative Lab Hawaii Program Fy 2016-2017
REPORT CREATIVE LAB HAWAII PROGRAM FY 2016-2017 In Response to Act 124, SLH2016, Sect.4.1. February 1, 2018 FOREWORD Act 124, SLH 2016, Sect.4.1.directed the Creative Industries Division (CID), Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT) to expand the Creative Lab Hawaii Program (CLH) to the neighbor islands and to implement an animation lab program. This report summarizes the activities that were implemented during FY 2016-2017. INTRODUCTION With the democratization of media and distribution channels disrupting traditional platforms of content delivery, there has never been a better time to provide the tools, mentoring, and investment opportunities to arm our creatives with business savvy to navigate this lucrative avenue of global export of intellectual property developed here in the islands. To position Hawaii as a hub of creative development in the Pacific, Creative Lab Hawaii was launched to accelerate professional development and export media, music, and design entrepreneurs. While students in our public schools as well as colleges have proven that media is a skill set they excel in, in order to continue the arc of accomplishment in the business of entertainment, an economic development program which compliments education efforts was necessary to build those skill sets necessary to be a 360-degree entrepreneur in the market today. BACKGROUND The CLH is a State of Hawaii program intended to accelerate global export of Hawaii’s creative content and/or products to strengthen our creative entrepreneurs’ capacity of success and establish Hawaii as a creative hub in the Pacific. The CLH is composed of three separate components: Immersive Programs, Ideation Workshops, and Public Programs. -

Etherealization in a Racial Regime of Ownership: Marconi in O'ahu, Circa
Morgenstern, Tyler. 2021. “Etherealization in a Racial Regime of Ownership: Marconi in O‘ahu, circa 1900.” Media+Environment 3 (2). https://doi.org/10.1525/001c.23515. MODELING THE PACIFIC OCEAN Etherealization in a Racial Regime of Ownership: Marconi in O‘ahu, circa 1900 Tyler Morgenstern a Keywords: media history, wireless, marconi, hawai'i, property, settler colonialism https://doi.org/10.1525/001c.23515 This article traces the emergence of wireless telegraphy in the Hawaiian Islands in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Centrally, I argue that for an ascendant haole (white settler) planter class, wirelessness proffered potent resources with which to articulate a particular model of scale and connectivity—one in which Hawai‘i’s isolation from the US mainland was recast as the predicate of new, and highly lucrative, forms of intimacy and proximity. These intimacies, I argue, overlapped not just symbolically but materially with the de facto and de jure forms of US colonial governance that took shape in the islands in this period. To make the case, I think through and around one particularly notable wireless transmission complex: the American Marconi Company’s hulking installation at Kahuku, on the North Shore of O‘ahu, and its companion station at Koko Head, some fifty miles south. Recounting the maneuvers by which these sites were drawn into the fold of long-distance wireless signaling, I show that to whatever extent wirelessness animated transcendent visions of scalar extensibility and global connectivity, it did so from within the confines of a oc lonial economy of land use, elaborated around the enclosure and privatization of Indigenous land and the racially stratified exploitation of migrant labor. -

It also means to mend and heal what has been damaged, in new and creative ways. Protection is one expression of the notion of kuleana which is connected to the central Kanaka concept of aloha `āina, the love of the land. We must understand how the relationship to the land connects Kanaka Protectors if we are to interpret their actions in an Indigenous perspective. Genealogical connections between gods, elements, humans and non- humans are the main framework that allows us to understand not only the actions, but the vocabulary used by Protectors to articulate their spiritual and political positions. -
