Présentation de l'éditeurFelicia's Journey - A tightly woven psychological thriller by acclaimed writer William Trevor'A book so brilliant that it compels you to stay up all night galloping through to the end' Daily MailWinner of the Whitbread Book of the Year Award and Sunday Express Book of the Year Award'You're beautiful,' Johnny told her. So, full of hope, seventeen-year-old Felicia crosses the Irish Sea to England to find her lover and tell him she is pregnant. Desperately searching for Johnny in the bleak post-industrial Midlands, she is instead found by Mr Hilditch, a strange and lonely man, a collector and befriender of homeless young girls . .'Immensely readable. The plot twist is both sinister and affecting, and so skilfully done that you remember why authors had plot twists in the first place' Philip Hensher, Guardian'A masterpiece. You read and are dazzled. It has one of the most memorable and convincing, most sinister and terrifying of characters created in the modern novel' Susan HillReaders of The Story of Lucy Gault and Love and Summer will adore Felicia's Journey. It will also be cherished by readers of Colm Toibin and William Boyd. William Trevor was born in Mitchelstown, County Cork. He has written eighteen novels and novellas, and hundreds of short stories, for which he has won a number of prizes including the Hawthornden Prize, the Yorkshire Post Book of the Year Award, the Whitbread Book of the Year Award and the David Cohen Literature Prize in recognition of a lifetime's literary achievement. In 2002 he was knighted for his services to literature. His books in Penguin are: After Rain; A Bit on the Side; Bodily Secrets; Cheating at Canasta; The Children of Dynmouth; The Collected Stories (Volumes One and Two); Death in Summer; Felicia's Journey; Fools of Fortune; The Hill Bachelors; Love and Summer; The Mark-2 Wife; Selected Stories; The Story of Lucy Gault and Two Lives..comFelicia's Journey is a simple tale told with a subtle complexity. Felicia is an Irish country girl who has come to England to look for her jilted lover. Hilditch is a mild-mannered, gentle psychopath who lures the helpless Felicia into his trap. Interestingly, we see the story from each character's eyes when they are separate, but from Hilditch's view when they are together. It is an unusual and effective device that distorts the perspective and adds texture to a classic story. Trevor won a Whitbread Prize in 1994 for Felicia's Journey. From Publishers WeeklyTrevor, long admired for his trenchant stories and novels, his subtle humor and broad compassion, retains all those virtues in his deeply absorbing new novel and adds a degree of narrative tension he has not shown before. Felicia is a poor, plain, rather simple Irish girl made pregnant by the first boy to bed her, who then promptly disappears to England, leaving no address. When she abandons her taciturn family to look for him, her only thought is to be reunited with a lover. But she meets portly, self- delighted Mr. Hilditch, catering manager at a factory in the grimy English Midlands, who shows her unexpected kindness, even helps arrange an abortion for her; after all, he's been a good friend to so many other lost girls, hasn't he? Wary of him at first, then resigned, finally increasingly anxious as she wonders what became of his other friends, Felicia picks her numb way among psychological minefields. What happens to her and to Mr. Hilditch, in the brilliantly evoked setting of dank cafes and pubs, homeless wanderers, revivalists and bus trips to stately homes, is the stuff of nightmare; not cynically created, but one born of deep understanding and piercing truth. This is a thriller lifted to the level of high art, and it should win Trevor many new admirers. BOMC selection. Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc. Sampson: "Bleak Splendour": Notes for an Unwritten Biography of William Tr "Bleak Splendour": Notes for an Unwritten Biography of William Trevor By DENIS SAMPSON IILITERARY BIOGRAPHERS," William Trevor has ren1arked, "often make the mistake of choosing the wrong subjects. A novelist-or any artist admired for what he produces, may not necessarily have lived anything but the most mundane of lives" (Excursions 176). His remark is a warning to any prospective biographer of Trevor himself, his way of implying that his own life has no worthwhile story. Yet the warning has its own paradoxical interest, for surely it is Trevor's particular gift to make literature out of the mundane. His refusal to dramatize the artistic self, to adopt heroic or romantic postures, somehow allows him to absorb and honor his mundane material, to find a tone that mirrors the inner lives of his unheroic characters. The consistency of that tone is his major accomplishment, according to John Banville: "his inimitable, calmly ambiguous voice can mingle in a single sentence pathos and humor, outrage and irony, mockery and love.... He is almost unique among n10dem novelists in that his own voice is never allowed to intrude into his fiction" (Paulson 166-67).

  • The Booker: Prized in Public Libraries?
The Booker: Prized in Public Libraries? An investigation into the attitudes of public librarians towards the Man Booker Prize for Fiction. A study submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Librarianship at The University of Sheffield by Karl Hemsley September 2003 1 Acknowledgements I owe thanks, first of all, to the fifteen librarians who so kindly gave of their time to be interviewed for this work. They all paid me the compliment of taking my questions seriously and providing thoughtful replies. I would also like to thank Lord Baker of Dorking, Mariella Frostrup, Simon Jenkins and Russell Celyn Jones, four former judges of the Booker Prize, who replied to emails that I sent rather late in the day. It was very kind of them to take the trouble to do this. I am very grateful to my supervisor, Professor Bob Usherwood, for his encouragement and advice, which have helped to make doing this piece of work an enjoyable experience, and much less daunting than it would otherwise have been. Finally, thanks to Bess for the loan of the digital recorder and helping this Luddite by putting the interviews onto disk. I still haven’t worked out where the cassettes go. 2 Abstract This report examines the attitude of a selection of public librarians towards the Man Booker Prize for Fiction. Fifteen librarians, from five library authorities in the north of England, were interviewed, in order to ascertain their opinions regarding the Booker and its place in public libraries. The report also considers the views of commentators on the Booker and literature concerning fiction provision in public libraries.

  • An Examination of Female Characterisation in a Selection of The
An Examination of Female Characterisation in a Selection of the Novels and Short Stories of William Trevor through the Lens of Simone de Beauvoir Anne Nash Student Number: 0466867 Ph.D. Thesis Mary Immaculate College University of Limerick Supervisors: Dr Kathryn Laing and Dr Eugene O’Brien Submitted to Mary Immaculate College: ______________________ i Abstract This thesis aims to examine female characterisation in a selection of William Trevor’s novels and short stories. The core argument in this thesis will be to demonstrate that Trevor, in his portrayal of women, presents a profoundly ethical dimension to his readers. A broad spectrum of his female characters, from a variety of narratives that span a period of nearly fifty years, will be analysed in order to demonstrate that Trevor, in his portrayal of women, conveys an enormous respect and understanding of how their lives are shaped. To substantiate the ethical dimension in Trevor’s fiction, the theoretical lens of Simone de Beauvoir will be employed. Trevor’s claim that the two things that really interest him are life and people finds endless correlations in existential philosophy; a philosophy that is concerned primarily with the concept of what it is to exist in the world and with how to live a meaningful life. This thesis will offer a fecund examination of the lives of female characters that will reveal the implications of de Beauvoir’s intensive examination of women’s lives and will demonstrate the capability of Trevor to grasp the divergence of the female experience from the male experience. Throughout the thesis, the breadth of Trevor’s writerly curiosity will emerge repeatedly through endlessly diverse stories that transport the reader into an array of different fictional worlds.

  • Reading Short Stories 2 William Trevor's "The Virgin's Gift"
Reading Short Stories 2 William Trevor's "The Virgin's Gift" YOSHIOKA, Fumio (EfIli] Jc~) In 2007, a book about Mother Tt'resa was published under the innocuous title of Mother T('resa: Come Be My Light (Doubleday). The peculiar subtitle was derived from the message which the sJintly woman said she had received from Christ on September 10, 1946, on her way to Darjeeling for a retreat. The book consists mostly of her correspondence with her conft'ssors and superiors, compiled and edited by the Rev. Brian Kolodiejchuk. Given its particular content and limited commercial appeal, the publication was expected to pass unnoticed except in the Catholic circles and among followers uf Mother Teresa. A decade had already passed since her death on September 5, 19~7, and some years since her beatification on October 19, 2003. The next (and, presumably, only) step that remained in the posthumous accolade for her was canonization, which most people believed would take some more time. This hectic age sends any celebrity swiftly into oblivion and allows no popularity to outlive its owner's demise too long. 'The Saint of the Gutters' is no exception to this ruthless impartiality of the modern amnesiac mindset. Then Time magazini' took nutice of the publication and chose Mother Teresa for the subject of the cover story (pp. 36-43) in its issue of September 3, 2007. The American weekly went on, in hindsight, to open what might be regarded as Pandora's box in the ecclesiastical world. That is how 'The Secret Life of Mother Teresa' (as the blurb on Timp's cover terms it) came to be known allover the world, a life totally concealeJ until then from the eyes of her disciples and admirers.
