  • Arthur Morris by TONY STEPHENS Aug
A legend and a gentleman - Arthur Morris By TONY STEPHENS Aug. 24, 2015, 9:37 p.m. Arthur Morris 1922-2015 ARTHUR Morris didn’t mind being overshadowed by Don Bradman; sometimes he even enjoyed it. Occasionally asked what he was doing when Bradman, in his last Test innings, was famously bowled for a duck, Morris would say he was at The Oval, London, in 1948. Doing what? ‘‘Playing. I was up the other end.’’ How did Arthur go? ‘‘I managed 196.’’ Morris died on Saturday. He managed to help that Australian team, called The Invincibles, to win that Test and the series, 4-0. In the previous Test, at Leeds, Morris managed 182 in a 301-run partnership with Bradman, helping Australia to chase 404 runs for victory in 345 minutes. He had helped Bradman, then troubled by Denis Compton’s bowling, by hitting the Englishman out of the attack. The partnership brought the then highest winning fourth-innings Test score. Morris hit three centuries and three more fifties in the 1948 Tests, to top the averages with 87; Bradman’s average was 72.57. Wisden named Morris one of the ‘‘cricketers of the year’’. Neville Cardus wrote: ‘‘Morris played pedigree cricket; blue-blood aristocracy.’’ And: ‘‘Morris was once more beyond praise – masterful, stylish, imperturbable, sure in defence, quick and handsome in stroke play. His batting is true to himself, charming and good mannered but reliant and thoughtful.’’ Other distinguished English cricket writers shared Cardus’ admiration. E.W. Swanton wrote: ‘‘Few more charming men have played for Australia and I cannot name one who was more popular with his opponents.’’ John Arlott said of Morris: ‘‘One of the best-liked cricketers of all time – charming, philosophical and relaxed.’’ Captain Bradman said: ‘‘He wasn’t always straight in defence.

West Indies 1960-61 Summer Tour PRELUDE TO THE 1960 - 61 WEST INDIES TOUR Fifty years ago, international cricket had a much different formula. Five-day Tests were the only vehicle for competition - one-day play was not yet even a figment of commercial imagination. There was no television in Australia, radio and newspapers providing the only media coverage. Overseas teams toured in every second season, on average, with interest focused on the Sheffield Shield competition in between times. Thus opportunities for seeing leading overseas players in action were limited. England and Australia ruled unchallenged as the leading Test nations and series between the two, for the right to hold the mythical Ashes, were regarded as the ultimate contest. Fixtures with the other Test-playing nations of the day - South Africa, West Indies, New Zealand, India and Pakistan - were considered of secondary importance and they were granted only occasional tours. Apart from England (three series), only West Indies and South Africa (one series each) played Tests in Australia during the 1950s.

  • Jack Moroney 1917-99
Jack Moroney 1917-99 • Born in northern NSW, joined Marrickville CC in 1943 • Right hand batsman • Played 7 Tests for Australia and 36 matches for NSW Opening batsman Jack Moroney was one of Marrickville’s three best batsmen, the other two being Bill Brown and Ron Saggers. All three scored centuries for Australia with Moroney and Brown scoring more than one in Test matches. John Rodger Moroney was born at Macksville on the NSW coast on 24 July 1917. He attended school in Sydney and was a pupil at St Joseph’s College, Hunters Hill, where, along with Stan McCabe, he had the reputation of being one of the schools’ best-ever cricketers. Moroney had his first taste of Sydney Grade cricket in 1943-44 when he joined the Marrickville club playing in their 1st Grade premiership winning team. He was the leading batsman in the side scoring 541 runs with a top score of 104 against Cumberland. In the final round of the season both Marrickville and St George were equal on points with the winner of the match taking the premiership. Almost 8,500 people packed Marrickville Oval to watch the clash with both teams allowed 2 hours and 5 minutes each to bat. St George finished at 9 for 150 but Marrickville quickly slumped to 3 for 19 in reply before Jack Moroney became the hero of the day hitting a fighting 55 against the likes of Bill O’Reilly enabling the home team to take the match and win the premiership. In 1945-46 Jack Moroney was at his best scoring a magnificent double century (203 not out) against Petersham which was the highest score recorded by the club in any grade and was the highest in Sydney Grade cricket that season.

Little Acorns “Bedi had placed his country firmly on the victory path”: Times of India Bishen Bedi, India v Australia, Third Test, Delhi, December 1969 When Sam Loxton was appointed manager for the Australian tour of India of 1959-60, Lindsay Hassett in an after-dinner speech joked: “I advise [Prime Minister] Mr Menzies to have Army and Navy standing by. A week after Sam gets to India war is bound to break out.” In fact that tour was a success, as K.N. Prabhu recalled for the Times of India ten years later after the 1969-70 series: “At a valedictory function to mark the end of the 1959-60 Australian tour of India, Richie Benaud removed his tie and blazer and presented them to his opposite number, G S Ramchand. It was a typical Benaud gesture, theatrical but sincere in its effect, as it conveyed his feelings that he had enjoyed the series. How different it was towards the end of 1969! No such courtesies were exchanged when the Madras Test ended two days before schedule. Lawry and his men packed their bags and left without much fanfare in batches to spend the New Year in Bombay en-route to South Africa.” The 1969-70 tour was wracked by disturbances and tensions, affecting both sides. Rioting broke out during the First Test at Bombay when Srinivas Venkataraghavan was given out. Hessian borders were set on fire and smoke drifted across the ground but Bill Lawry insisted play should continue. Johnny Gleeson was knocked to his knees by a bottle which struck him behind the ear as the Australians were escorted off the pitch when play ended, and Lawry was hit by a wicker-chair thrown from the pavilion balcony1.
