However, taxonomic knowledge on these important green algae is still sparse. In the present study, the molecular diversity and distribution of Blidingia species in the German State of Schleswig-Holstein was examined for the first time, including Baltic Sea and Wadden Sea coasts and the off-shore island of Helgo- land (Heligoland). In total, three entities were delimited by DNA barcoding, and their respective distributions were verified (in decreasing order of abundance: Blidingia marginata, Blidingia cornuta sp. nov. and Blidingia minima). Our molecular data revealed strong taxonomic discrepancies with historical species concepts, which were mainly based on morphological and ontogenetic char- acters. Using a combination of molecular, morphological and ontogenetic approaches, we were able to disentangle previous mis- identifications of B. minima and demonstrate that the distribution of B. minima is more restricted than expected within the examined area.

They comprise the multicellular green algae (Chlorophyta), red algae (Rhodophyta), and brown algae (Phaeophyceae). Until very recently, the relationship among the Algae and other Protists remained inconclusive and often contradic- tory (Adl et al. 2005). Changes in abiotic parameters may induce shifts in marine biota. Seaweeds are recognized as bioindicators, though those from remote tropical islands have been rarely studied. This study updates the diversity, richness and distribution of macroalgae from Trindade, a Brazilian volcanic island located 1140 km off the coast. Biotic data, obtained in a global database and in situ and compiled in a new records list, were associated with abiotic parameters. Conservation and ecological issues were discussed in the context of the observed greater richness, expansion of the distributional range and low endemism.

Natal, Brazil Fernando de Noronha Archipelago is an isolated group of volcanic islands located in the tropical western South Atlantic Ocean, 345 km off the north-eastern coast of Brazil. It consists of one large island and 19 small adjacent islets totalling 26 km2 that represent the peaks of the Mid- Atlantic Ridge (Maida and Ferreira 1997). The macroalgae of the archipelago were first studied in the nineteenth century (Dickie 1874; Hemsley 1885; Murray 1891), and since then, occasional surveys have increased the knowledge of the diversity of the local species of benthic seaweed. Currently, the marine flora of Fernando de Noronha includes 135 taxa, represented by 56 Figure 1. Inventory of the Seaweeds of Lake Montauk (41.0601 N -71.9206 W) Montauk, East Hampton Town Suffolk County, New York Final Report Larry B. Liddle and Mark Abramson June 2011 The purpose of this study was to assess the diversity of seaweeds in Lake Montauk as part of the Lake Montauk Project of the East Hampton Town Natural Resources Department. Seaweeds were collected monthly by wading at low tide at five locations starting 10 October 2009 until 23 October 2010. Initial dredging for specimens was useful only for obtaining floating mat organisms. Specimens were pressed and dried on herbarium paper using the facilities of the East Hampton Town Shellfish Hatchery Laboratory in Montauk. No chemical preservatives were used in the preparation of the herbarium specimens. The dried specimens represent a permanent record of the inventory for East Hampton Town. They were also optically scanned and saved in Portable Document Format (PDF) and are a digital archive of the collection. Such images have sufficient detail necessary to make initial identifications. The PDF images are available on the East Hampton Town website. The rich flora includes many of the characteristic species of the northeast coast of North America. The inventory corroborates our assumption that it would. However, certain species that are part of the northern flora are absent at both Montauk Point and in Lake Montauk. All species found in Lake Montauk are found at Montauk Point, the most characteristic northern marine habitat of Long Island. Good examples are the large brown kelps which are considered to be cold water species.
