Catechetical Summary ● Sin is above all else an offense against God, a rupture of communion with him. At the same time it damages communion with the Church. For this reason conversion entails both God’s forgiveness and reconciliation with the Church, which are expressed and accomplished liturgically by the sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation.1 ● The sacrament of Reconciliation “is called the sacrament of conversion because it makes sacramentally present Jesus’ call to conversion, the first step in returning to the Father from whom one has strayed by sin.”2 ● The sacrament of Reconciliation “is called the sacrament of forgiveness, since by the priest’s sacramental absolution God grants the penitent pardon and peace.”3 ● This sacrament also goes by the titles of Penance and Confession. ● As children reach the age of reason, the Church extends to them an invitation to join with the parish community in the celebration of the sacrament of Reconciliation–the Gift of Peace. Initiated into the Christian community at Baptism, the children are now called to prepare for the sacrament of God’s loving mercy. ● We are all sinners, and we need the strength offered to us in the form of the sacrament of Reconciliation for our faith journey. Baptism calls us to live in relationship with God and with others. When we sin, we harm that relationship. Making use of sacramental Reconciliation helps us to turn away from sin and live ever more in the image of Christ. ● In imparting to his apostles his own power to forgive sins, the Lord also gave them the authority to reconcile sinners with the Church.4 ● In the sacrament of Penance the faithful who confess their sins to a legitimate minister, are sorry for them, and intend to reform themselves, obtain from God through the absolution imparted by the same minister, forgiveness for the sins they 1 CCC 1440. 2 CCC 1423. 3 CCC 1424. 4 CCC 1444. 2 have committed after Baptism and, at the same, time are reconciled with the Church which they have wounded by their sin.5 ● “In order that the liturgy may be able to produce its full effects it is necessary that the faithful come to it with proper dispositions, that their minds be attuned to their voices, and they cooperate with heavenly grace lest they receive it in vain…. It is the duty of the pastors to ensure that the faithful take part fully aware of what they are doing, actively engaged in the rite and enriched by it.”6 II. Cooperation between Parents and Pastors The preparation of children for the reception of the sacraments is a work of cooperation between pastors and parents, each of whom has, in his own way, both the right and the duty of educating Christian children. The Church joyfully affirms that parents are the “principal and first educators of their children”7 and the “first heralds” for them of the Gospel.8 Yet this primary right of parents to educate their children is not absolute. In matters of faith and morals, it is subordinate to the authority of the Church. For Christian education “belongs preeminently to the Church,” both because of the authority given to her by Christ to teach all nations,9 and because she is the spiritual mother of all those who are born of the waters of Baptism. Just as parents have a natural right and duty to educate the children born to them by nature, so also the Church has a supernatural right and duty to educate all the children born to her by grace.10 The primary aim of sacramental preparation is to ensure that those approaching the sacraments are suitably instructed and properly disposed. Parents and pastors are called to work harmoniously together in fulfilling the evangelizing mission of the Church by taking joint responsibility for ensuring that children receive suitable instruction prior to reception of the sacraments. It is for the pastor to judge that the children are properly disposed and suitably instructed before allowing them to receive the sacraments. Canonical Requirements for the Reception of the Sacrament The Christian faithful have the right to receive the sacraments.12 Therefore, the sacraments cannot be denied to those who fulfill the basic canonical requirements for receiving them.13 In the case of First Reconciliation, these basic requirements are that one must: ● be a baptized Catholic, ● have attained the use of reason, ● have contrition for sin, ● have a firm resolution to sin no more, ● and be suitably instructed and properly disposed. In order to be considered as suitably instructed and properly disposed, children must understand the evil of sin according to their capacity and they “must be disposed in such a way that, rejecting sins committed and having a purpose of amendment, the person is turned back to God.”14 If a member of the Christian faithful meets these basic canonical requirements for the reception of First Reconciliation, even if he/she has not fulfilled the requirements of a given parish catechetical program or the diocesan expectations outlined below, he/she cannot be refused the sacrament. After having attained the use of reason, each member of the faithful is obliged to confess faithfully his or her grave sins at least once a year.15 IV. Instructions for Catechetical Programs in Catholic Parishes and Schools “Pastors of souls and other members of the Christian faithful, according to their respective ecclesiastical function, have the duty to take care that those who seek the sacraments are prepared to receive them by proper evangelization and catechetical instruction, attentive to the norms issued by competent authority.”16 Sacramental preparation programs, whether in parishes or in schools, must not be content with merely fulfilling the minimum canonical requirements for reception of the sacraments, but must seek to provide vigorous and robust catechesis aimed at a deeply rooted and living faith. Sacramental preparation programs must provide doctrinally sound catechesis for sacramental formation. “The disciple of Christ has the right to receive the ‘Word of Faith’ not in mutilated, falsified or in diminished form, but whole and entire, in all 12 CIC, c. 213. 13 CIC, c. 843, §1. 14 CIC, 987. 15 CIC, c. 989. 16 CIC, c. 843, §2. 4 its rigor and vigor.”17 Catechetical formation should be robust and reflect the teachings of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. It should include personal testimony that gives witness to the Christian life. And it should adhere to diocesan curriculum standards for immediate preparation for the sacrament.18 A. Remote and Proximate Preparation Parish faith formation programs and Catholic schools should offer approximately 30 hours of catechetical formation for children in the year prior to their reception of the sacrament (remote preparation), and approximately 30 hours of catechetical formation in the year concurrent with their reception of the sacrament (proximate preparation). Parents who homeschool their children should be affirmed and encouraged as the primary educators of their children. They should be in yearly communication with their pastor so that he is able to ensure the religious education of every child in his parish.19 B. Immediate Preparation The baptismal certificate should be requested at the beginning of immediate preparation. This is very important because the preparation for and the reception of the sacraments is different for children who have not been baptized and for children who have been baptized outside the Catholic Church.20 Parish catechetical leaders should offer 8-10 hours of immediate preparation for the sacrament, in addition to and distinct from the approximately 30 hours of annual catechetical formation (and distinct from the immediate preparation for First Communion). These 8-10 hours may include a combination of time spent together at the parish and time spent on projects to be completed in the home. All children should be invited and encouraged to participate in the immediate preparation for the sacrament--not only those enrolled in parish faith formation, but also those enrolled in Catholic schools and those who are homeschooled. This is to enable all families to come together as a parish community for the building up of the body of Christ and for the common good of the parish. ● Parish catechetical leaders should consider the possibility of offering monthly sessions, in the months immediately prior to the reception of the sacrament, to prepare students who have received catechetical formation in various venues prior to this immediate preparation. 17 Pope John Paul II, Catechesis in our Time, 30. 18 See attached Curriculum Guidelines. 19 Bishop Morlino, Letter to Parents. 20 See Section VII: Pastoral Considerations. 5 ● Pastors and parish catechetical leaders should encourage parents to participate in the immediate sacramental preparation of their children (e.g. by attending sacramental preparation sessions and/or by completing assignments prepared by the parish catechetical leader with their children at home). ● Parish catechetical leaders should consider the possibility of offering family faith formation sessions, which includes adult faith formation for parents.

INTRODUCTION 2.1.1 Out of the baptismal font, Christ the Lord generates children to the Church who bear the image of the resurrected one. United to Christ in the Holy Spirit, they are rendered fit to celebrate with Christ the sacred liturgy, spiritual worship.123 2.1.2 “This bath is called enlightenment, because those who receive this instruction are enlightened in their understanding....” Having received in baptism the Word, “the true light that enlightens every man,” the person baptized has been “enlightened,” he becomes a “son of light,” indeed, he becomes “light” himself: “Baptism is God’s most beautiful and magnificent gift.... We call it gift, grace, anointing, enlightenment, garment of immortality, bath of rebirth, seal, and most precious gift. It is called gift because it is conferred on those who bring nothing of their own; grace since it is given even to the guilty; baptism because sin is buried in the water; anointing for it is priestly and royal as are those who are anointed; enlightenment because it radiates light; clothing since it veils our shame; bath because it washes; and seal as it is our guard and the sign of God’s Lordship.”124 2.1.3 From the time of the Apostles, becoming a Christian has been accomplished by a journey and initiation in several stages. This journey can be covered rapidly or slowly, but certain essential elements will always have to be present: proclamation of the Word, acceptance of the Gospel entailing conversion, profession of faith, baptism itself, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, and admission to Eucharistic Communion.125 2.1.4 The image of the journey of faith is clearly evident in the Church’s ritual for the initiation of adults and older children.

The light of the East has illumined the universal Church, from the moment when "a rising sun" appeared above us (Lk 1:78): Jesus Christ, our Lord, whom all Christians invoke as the Redeemer of man and the hope of the world. That light inspired my predecessor Pope Leo XIII to write the Apostolic Letter Orientalium Dignitas in which he sought to safeguard the significance of the Eastern traditions for the whole Church.(1) On the centenary of that event and of the initiatives the Pontiff intended at that time as an aid to restoring unity with all the Christians of the East, I wish to send to the Catholic Church a similar appeal, which has been enriched by the knowledge and interchange which has taken place over the past century. Since, in fact, we believe that the venerable and ancient tradition of the Eastern Churches is an integral part of the heritage of Christ's Church, the first need for Catholics is to be familiar with that tradition, so as to be nourished by it and to encourage the process of unity in the best way possible for each. Our Eastern Catholic brothers and sisters are very conscious of being the living bearers of this 2 tradition, together with our Orthodox brothers and sisters. The members of the Catholic Church of the Latin tradition must also be fully acquainted with this treasure and thus feel, with the Pope, a passionate longing that the full manifestation of the Church's catholicity be restored to the Church and to the world, expressed not by a single tradition, and still less by one community in opposition to the other; and that we too may be granted a full taste of the divinely revealed and undivided heritage of the universal Church(2) which is preserved and grows in the life of the Churches of the East as in those of the West.

The article by Monk Basil of the Gregoriou Monastery on Mt. Athos, which you reproduce and extensively introduce in this posting (rather awk- wardly translated and entitled “Anti-Patristic: The Stance of the Zealot Old Calendarists”) is well known to us. Inchoate, polemical, insulting, bereft of any real scholarly substance, drawing half-truths from the misuse of historical and Patristic texts, and posturing as a Patristic commentary, it does little to address the real issues of so-called Old Calendarist zealotry. In his observations, which are basically a response to an earlier article (written in 1999) by Father Nicholas Demaras on the ecclesiology of resistance (criti- cizing the Gregoriou Monastery for not walling itself off from the Orthodox ecumenists), Father Basil (a former “zealot” who, I am told but have not confirmed, is now an Archimandrite in Crete) comes to sweepingly broad conclusions drawn from difficult canonical, historical, and Patristic texts that he presents in a naive and, of course, self-serving way, grinding his axe on a soft stone.

THE DIVIDED CHURCH The very term intercommunion gives expression, on the one hand, to the tragic fact of a divided Christendom and, on the other hand, symbol- izes the increasingly shared yearning for mutual recognition and ecumenical fellowship among those segments of Christendom which we call denom- inations, communions or churches. The very fact that we have to speak of Churches instead of the Church is part of the tragedy, and part of our sinful involvement. Only in more recent times have Protestant people begun to recognize and take seriously the tragic consequences of the Reformation in the rise of denominationalism. Altars have been set up against altars, ecclesiastical "iron curtains" have divided Christendom into hostile camps and led to many unchristian consequences which we today, both Catholics and Protestants, are being led by the Holy Spirit to confess with shame and sorrow. The subject of intercommunion is very complex due to so many different theological traditions and ecclesiastical usages in Christendom. The attitudes of the churches vary all the way from a denial of the very idea of intercommunion to an entirely open communion. Between these extremes we find various degrees of intercommunion such as the recogni- tion of an occasional practice of intercommunion between different denom- inations under special circumstances, or a regular intercommunion based on mutual agreement between two distinct denominations. In the latter case, when a full mutual recognition of the ministries is included, inter- communion may also include the right of intercelebration. Generally speaking intercommunion is regarded by the Churches which have autho- rized it as a step toward or an anticipation of an organic union of the Churches.

    Apostolic Constitution on The Sacrament of Confirmation Paul, Bishop Servant of the Servants of God for an Everlasting Memorial The sharing in the divine nature given to individuals through the grace of Christ bears a certain likeness to the origin, development, and nourishing of natural life. Born anew by Baptism, the faithful are strengthened by the Sacrament of Confirmation and ultimately are sustained by the food of eternal life in the Eucharist. By means of these Sacraments of Christian Initiation, they thus receive in increasing measure the treasures of divine life and advance toward the perfection of charity. It has rightly been written: ‘The flesh is washed, that the soul may be cleansed; the flesh is anointed, that the soul may be consecrated; the flesh is signed, that the soul too may be fortified; the flesh is overshadowed by the laying on of hands, that the soul too may be enlightened by the Spirit; the flesh is fed on the Body and Blood of Christ, that the soul too may be richly nourished by God.’1 Conscious of its pastoral charge, the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council devoted special attention to these Sacraments of Initiation, prescribing that the rites should be suitably revised and more accommodated to the understanding of the faithful. Since, therefore, the Ordo Baptismi parvulorum, revised at the mandate of the same universal Synod and published at Our command, is already in use, it is now fitting to publish a Rite of Confirmation, so that the unity of Christian Initiation may be shown in its true light. In fact, careful work and study have been devoted in these last years to the task of revising the manner of celebrating this Sacrament.

    A Guide to the Sacrament of Penance Discover God’s Love Anew: Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord, Our Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, has asked “for renewed pastoral courage in ensuring that the day-to-day teaching of Christian communities persuasively and effectively presents the practice of the Sacrament of Reconciliation ” (Novo Millennio Ineunte , 37). A renewed appreciation for this wonderful sacrament which leads many to return to the life of grace will bring about a new springtime, a new era of growth and life for the Church. In response to the Pope’s invitation, this statement will speak of our need for reconciliation and explain how we receive it. While we hope that all Catholics properly understand the nature and importance of the sacrament of Penance, this statement is directed in a special way to those who do not understand it or who have drifted away from its use. We invite every Catholic to celebrate the sacrament of Penance or Reconciliation or, as we have traditionally said, “go to Confession,” on a regular basis. There can be no better way to make progress on our spiritual journey than by returning in humble repentance and love to God, whose forgiveness reestablishes us as his children and restores us to peace with his Church and our neighbors. The memory, venerable brothers, is still vivid in our mind of the great emotion we felt in proclaiming the august Mother of God as the spiritual Mother of the Church, that is to say, of all the faithful and of the sacred pastors, as the crowning of the third session of the Second Vatican Council, after having solemnly promulgated the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church.(3) Great also was the happiness of numerous Council Fathers, as well as of the faithful, who were present at the sacred rite in St. Peter's basilica and of the entire Christian people scattered throughout the world. The memory came spontaneously to many minds of the first grandiose triumph achieved by the humble "handmaid of the Lord"(4) when the Fathers from East and West, gathered in an ecumenical council at Ephesus in the year 431, greeted Mary as "Theotokos" - genitrix of God. " In accord with the ancient practice followed in the Roman liturgy, adults are not to be baptized without receiving Confirmation immediately afterward, unless serious reason stands in the way" [RCIA 215; canon 866; U.S. Statutes 35]. This also applies to unbaptized children of catechetical age [U.S. Statutes 18-19]. When Candidates are received into the full communion of the Roman Catholic Church they are to be confirmed at the time of their Profession of Faith and reception of their Confirmation is not to be deferred [U.S. Statutes 35 and canon 885.1]. 2. Who has the responsibility to confirm? The diocesan bishop is the proper minister of the sacraments of initiation for adults. However, any priest who baptizes someone who is no longer an infant, that is, of catechetical age or older, or receives someone into the full communion of the Roman Catholic Church, by law has the responsibility to confirm this person [canons 883 and 885]. Priests who do not exercise a pastoral office but participate in a catechumenate require a mandate from the diocesan bishop if they are to baptize; they then do not require any additional mandate or authorization in order to confirm, but have the faculty to confirm from the law, as do priests who baptize in the exercise of their pastoral office [U.S. Statutes 12]. 3. Can a priest confirm a baptized but uncatechized Catholic?
