One of the Top Social and Political Humorists in America, The Jimmy Tingle One of the top social and political humorists in America, the Cambridge, MA-born Jimmy Tingle has a career spanning three decades, as a comedian, writer, actor, activist and entrepreneur. He rose up from the Boston comedy boom of the ‘80s, the scene that spawned Denis Leary, Bobcat Goldthwait and Paula Poundstone. He worked for two seasons with 60 Minutes II on CBS as the humorist/commentator in the Andy Rooney spot. He has worked as a contributor and satirist for MSNBC and has appeared on The Tonight Show, CNN with Tom Foreman, Larry King Weekend, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, and The American Comedy Awards, as well as his own HBO half-hour comedy special. He has also been a guest on NPR’s “Fresh Air” with Terry Gross and appeared regularly on “Heat” with John Hockenberry. Tingle has produced several comedic and theatrical productions, including Jimmy Tingle’s Uncommon Sense at the storied Hasty Pudding Theater at Harvard, which became the longest running one-person show in that theater’s history. He also wrote, produced and starred in his first documentary film, Jimmy Tingle’s American Dream, which aired on over 60 PBS affiliates and won Best Documentary at the Independent Film Quarterly Film and New Media Festival in Los Angeles in 2011. Other film credits include small roles in Larry David’s Clear History, Chris Rock’s Head of State, Next Stop, Wonderland and Boondock Saints. He played himself in the International Emmy Award-winning documentary on arts censorship, Dammed in the USA. Tingle has the rare distinction of winning Boston magazine’s “Best of Boston” awards in two different categories. He won as a performer in the “stand-up comedy” category and then the venue he founded in 2002, Jimmy Tingle’s OFF BROADWAY, was named “best alternative theater.” Tingle was artistic director-producer at the Somerville, Mass. theater through 2007. His newest standup comedy show, “Making Comic Sense of 2013,” was recorded as a one hour radio special and is available at PRX.org. Jimmy Tingle recently returned to school, earning a master’s degree from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government, where he was selected to give the graduate address at Harvard’s 2010 commencement ceremony. Tingle grew up working class and that perspective – coupled with his Catholic background, particularly the social justice side of the faith – continues to be a major influence in his life, politics and worldview. Tingle continues to tour the country, performing in theaters and for colleges, non-profit organizations, private parties and corporate clients. 99 Canal Center Plaza, Suite 100, Alexandria, VA 22314 Office: 703.373.9974 | www.WWSG.com .

You can’t just say your reaction as an audience is either to laugh or shut up and that’s the only thing you can do.” --Glen Weldon, “NPR: Pop Culture Happy Hour Podcast,” 19 December 2014 **Please Note: This syllabus is a dense document, but contains almost everything you need to know about the class (but were afraid to ask!) It is your contract, guidebook, ultimate resource. When you have a question, consult the syllabus first before contacting the instructor.** Course Description The popularity of shows like “Broad City” and the clout of performers such as Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Wanda Sykes have arguably put to rest the old stereotype that women aren't funny. More importantly, they have all shown that comedy and humor can be vehicles for feminist messages. In so doing, they have built upon a legacy established by performers, writers, directors, and activists extending back to feminism's "first wave." In this course, we will examine the intersections of feminism, comedy, and humor, and will explore questions such as: In what ways are comedy and humor gendered? What roles do race, class, and sexuality play? Why have feminists, and women more generally, been seen as inherently unfunny? How have feminists used humor and comedy for political ends? We will also broadly consider the ethics, politics, and social and cultural purposes of comedy and humor.

  • PAULA POUNDSTONE Biography
PAULA POUNDSTONE Biography Appearing on stage with a stool, a microphone, and a can of Diet Pepsi, PAULA POUNDSTONE is famous for her razor-sharp wit and spontaneity. The Boston Globe said, “Poundstone improvises with a crowd like a Jazz musician…swinging in unexpected directions without a plan, without a net.” Paula is so quick and unassuming that audience members at her live shows often leave complaining that their cheeks hurt from laughter and debating whether the random people she talked to were “plants”. Paula grew up in Sudbury, Massachusetts and by the time she was nineteen was traveling on a Greyhound bus across the country – stopping in at open mic nights at comedy clubs as she went. She credits her kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Bump, with being the first one to spot her comedic talents. Bump wrote in a letter to Paula’s parents: “I have enjoyed many of Paula’s humorous comments about our activities.” In 1979 Paula began nurturing her standup comedy talent as part of the Boston comedy scene, and then moved to San Francisco where she continued to flourish. By 1990 she’d relocated to Los Angeles and had starred in several comedy specials for HBO, as well as appeared on Saturday Night Live when friend and mentor Robin Williams hosted the show. Paula’s first one- hour HBO special, “Cats, Cops, and Stuff.” made her the first woman to ever receive the Cable ACE for best standup comedy special. She also starred in a self-titled talk show series for HBO (for which she won her second Cable ACE Award for Best Program Interviewer, beating out other, more recognized names in that field.) In 1992, Poundstone forsook what she considered the ‘staid’ 5-minute standup set on late night talk-shows for something she thought would be more real with the audience and filed memorable field commentary of the Presidential Election for the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE Thank you for taking part in this piece of history. We hope that as the evening progresses, you find that one word resounds: transmission. Transmission of hope. Transmission of self-reflection. Tramission of remembrance. Elie Wiesel, with this play, poses a question about our capacity to reconstruct peace after war, when human madness has so much taken over reason. In the past several weeks we have seen numerous examples of just how far we are from fully reclaiming our humanity, but we hope that this performance revives and continues discussions about how to best attain that necessary end. • 3 Still Standing - a Comedy Documentary the Inside Story of the Comedy Boom That Rocked San Francisco in the 1980S and How Big Business Nearly Destroyed It
3 Still Standing - A Comedy Documentary The inside story of the comedy boom that rocked San Francisco in the 1980s and how big business nearly destroyed it. Everyone knows Robin Williams, Dana Carvey and Paula Poundstone. This is the story about their friends - the other jokers in the room, the ones who stayed in San Francisco, worked the clubs and rode a comedy movement – right up until the comedy bubble burst in 1992. In the 1980s, the comedy scene in San Francisco wasn’t commercial. In the pursuit of brilliant comedy, nothing was too experimental, too bold or too crass. Unlike New York or Los Angeles, there were rarely TV cameras here. Comics weren’t jockeying for a spot on the Tonight Show. The real prize was making other comedians laugh. These San Francisco headliners - Will Durst, Larry “Bubbles” Brown and Johnny Steele - were the comedians’ comedians. Today’s top comics across the country say these three are brilliant and gifted - among the very best in the business. In this feature documentary, we watch as their careers begin to soar during the 1980s heyday of stand-up. But as they’re about to hit the big time, the scene implodes. Robin Williams called it a “comedic recession.” With the arrival of comedy on cable TV, hundreds of clubs close. The remaining clubs are bought up by entertainment giants. Local headliners are now obsolete. For club comics, years spent becoming masters of the art of standup suddenly seem worthless. 3 Still Standing is about how Will, Larry and Johnny fight for their art in an increasingly corporatized world that seeks young, TV-friendly faces and eschews controversy.
