Contents Camp News Pages 3-9 Wisconsin Department Pioneers Page 10 Patiotci Instruccotr Page 11-12 Camps & Officers Page 13 COMMANDER'S COLUMN Brothers, I hope you all had a Merry Christmas, and that you and your families will have a healthy and wonderful New Year. We will be compiling the reports for the Mid-Winter meeting on Saturday, February 2nd. The reports should be for activity since the June Department Encampment. I will be sending out a fillable form that can be used as a template for what type of information to include. You may use the form, or a word document. Please send the report electronically so I can have printed copies made to share at the meeting. I will need reports from each of the Camps as well as from the Department Officers by January 19th to give me time to assemble them. Some of you have asked about what the SUVCW can do regarding the issue of the marker and cenotaph in the Confederate Rest section of Forest Hill Cemetery in Madison. I compiled a list of articles regarding Madison's issues with the stone with the plaque on it, and the cenotaph marker with the names of the Confederate soldiers who died as POW's at Camp Randall, and are buried at Forest Hill Cemetery. Per a discussion with CinC Don Shaw, I have sent the articles to the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the United Daughters of the Confederacy, who originally installed both markers. Although this is not directly our fight, it speaks to the modern tendency to remove any historical markers that have the potential to offend someone.

  • Young Bess in Hats Before She Became Mrs
By Raymond H. Geselbracht Young Bess in Hats Before She Became Mrs. Harry S.Truman, Before She Became First Lady oung Bess Wallace had beautiful eyes, large and round and expressive. She knew her eyes Ywere beautiful and wanted people to notice them and to see the young woman’s heart and personality they revealed. We know this because we can see it in the photographs taken of her during the first 30 years or so of her life. She also liked to express herself through her clothes, especially her hats. 46 ProloguePrologue Spring 2013 One of her teachers remembered that Bess, when she was a high school girl, “was always dressed in the very latest.” Her best friend recalled that “Bess always had more stylish hats than the rest of us did, or she wore them with more style.” This stylishness is apparent in the early photographs, too. The later Bess Truman—the one remem bered as First Lady from 1945 to 1953— seems a different person. She was not easy to know. She was a very private person forced to live as a very public one. She believed, as she said when her husband was just enter ing the national political spotlight, that a woman’s place in public was “to sit beside her husband, be silent, and be sure her hat is on straight.” When she became First Lady, she refused to give press conferences. A reporter protest ed her decision, and she replied, “I am not the one who is elected. I have nothing to say Left: Bess Truman at the 1944 Democratic National Convention, where Harry was nominated for Vice President.

  • Cowboy Hat March 2003/May 2004
Teaching with Museum Collections I Want To Be A Cowboy Hat March 2003/May 2004 Overview of the Teaching with Museum Collections initiative The National Park Service [NPS] Teaching with Museum Collections [TMC] introduces lesson plans for teachers to use NPS museum collections in student-centered activities. NPS museum collections tell the story of America, its peoples, cultures, varied habitats, significant events, and ideas that continue to inspire the world. Collections are located in the very places where people and events shaped the nation’s history and environment. TMC emphasizes the links between the ‘real things;’ the collections, and the sites where those collections were found, collected, or used. NPS collections include cultural objects, natural history specimens and archival documents and photographs. TMC lesson plans contribute student-centered learning while increasing understanding of park themes and resources. TMC has the potential to be incorporated into over 320 NPS sites. Lesson plans will be developed for history, social studies, math, and language and visual arts. They will be linked to national education standards. Lesson Plan Elements I Want To Be A Cowboy Hat o Steve Medemar, Jim Konen, Bob Schalk Grade Level: 8 Length of Lesson: 45 minutes to 1 day Overview of object-based lesson plan Theme/Goal: hat Understand the importance of the different styles, functions and importance of the cowboy hat in the western era.
