Produced by Teddy Thompson, their first and highly anticipated album together is an extraordinary debut of the pair’s transcendent musical bond. Not Dark Yet was recorded in Los Angeles in the summer of 2016. The album provides a potent look at the sisters’ individual and collective artistry through eclectic song choices from writers ranging from the Louvin Brothers, Nick Cave, Kurt Cobain, and back to Jessie Colter. Shelby and Allison wrap their arms around the past, plant their feet in the present, and nod toward what’s around the bend with a co-written “Is It Too Much,” to close out the ten-song set. Raised in the haunting and beautiful woods of rural Alabama, the sisters sang as soon as they could form words, but music is the only language they have ever needed to communicate with and understand each other. Not Dark Yet offers a glimpse into that understanding for the first time and finally, after years of trying to get it made, at the right time. Shelby Lynne and Allison Moorer have pursued separate musical paths, garnering a Grammy, an Oscar nod, and many other awards and nominations along the way. They have collectively released twenty-four albums, but never one together until now. Not Dark Yet is not a duet record. It is no ordinary collaboration.     A MADONNA WITH GYPSY BLOOD The love ideal in Bob Dylan ’s songs Jan-Hendrik Bakker It was during one of the Poetry International Festivals in the early nineties. Students from the academy for cinematographic art were preparing a documentary about people and their poetic favorites. Their approach was to surprise festival attendees by asking them to recite a poem they knew by heart. Later their recitations would be recorded on video. I still remember it really turned out to be a nice documentary. I happened to become one of their victims. Walt Whitman is my favorite poet, but, unfortunately in this case, I do not know by heart the huge amounts of text that this nineteenth century, bearded bard had produced. So I hesitated for awhile, but after a short time these words came up: Nobody feels any pain,/ tonight as I stand inside the rain/ Everybody knows,/ that baby ’s got new clothes/ but lately I ’ve seen her ribbons and her bows/ have fallen from her curls... One of the young men looked at me as if I had just made a joke. No sorry, this was not what he meant. I said I was sorry too, couldn ’t help it. This kind of poetry is part of my inner system, more than Nijhoff and Hendrik de Vries 1, who, I have to confess, are beautiful poets as well. It must be due to my generation; while others were exposed to the poetry of Jacques Pr évert or Jacques Brel in their childhood days, it was the songs of Bob Dylan, especially his love songs that left their imprints in my blood.

We at Judas! central are off to see two shows in Sweden and participate in the Stockholm convention - and hope to see as many of you there as possible - before the UK tour starts, a set of dates made much more attractive by the later additions of Hammersmith and Brixton. Ah, what memories to be rekindled and hopefully new ones to savour too. Inside these pages we bring you another collection of articles that we trust you will enjoy. Again we have aimed for a balance between well known names and newcomers or relative newcomers. This is something we can only maintain if new writers keep coming forward. There’s a plea elsewhere in these pages for photographs, the same goes for new material. A few out there (you know who you are) have started articles, please keep at them, the more new writing blood in the Dylan fanzine world the better as far as I am concerned. Issue Eight will hopefully feature one or more of these, plus articles by established names. Manuel Vardavas’s bootleg column will be back again (presuming something worthy of discussion is released, that is) and it is quite likely we will be taking an in- depth look at SACD and bootleg DVDs from a ‘technology-and-its-impact-on-your- Dylan-entertainment’ standpoint.

    freewheelin-on-line take seven Freewheelin’ 205 September 2002 The French painter Pierre Bonnard (1867 – 1947) was shackled with an obsessive love for his wife. Consequently, she appears in a lot of his paintings – indeed if you look closely you can see her head, bathed in blue, in the bottom right hand corner of this cover which is taken from a painting by Bonnard. The purpose of the blue above her head is that it matches the blue of the sky and thus it places her close to heaven. The painting is however called ‘The Open Window’ so Pierre, being the jealous kind, wants to draw the viewer away from gloating at his wife towards what is going on outside his lounge in the South of France. Outside the window in my picture, I have Dylan, looking like a deranged gardener with a guitar, walking towards Bonnard’s wife with intent. Pierre won’t be too pleased about that but there is a joint obsession on display here: ours with Dylan and Bonnard’s with his wife. The difference is that our obsession cannot be as intense as Bonnard’s. Of course it can’t. Can it? But hold on a minute, Dylan isn’t looking at Pierre’s wife at all – he is looking straight at us.     ANDREAS HÄGER Bob Dylan and Religion his article is a discussion of the relations of one particular rock artist, Bob TDylan, to religion. Bob Dylan is one of the most influential artists of the rock era. After a career spanning almost fifty years and over forty albums, he still continuously tours around the world. He has been the subject of many biographies and studies. Religion can be seen as a recurring topic in Dylan’s work—particularly during a period at the end of the 1970s and beginning of the 1980s, often referred to as his ‘Christian era’—and also in the discourses around him. This article explores how the topic of religion appears in dis- courses around Bob Dylan.1 This article is located within the field of research on religion and popular culture, which has emerged as a small subfield within religious studies during the last decade or so (e.g. Forbes & Mahan 2000; Mazur & McCarthy 2001). The perspective in the field is here a sociological one, where the connection between religion and popular culture is seen as an example of how religion relates to contemporary society. Popular culture is an important part of con- temporary society and one to which religion also relates; popular culture is an area where religion appears today. Here I want to look at one particular aspect of the connection between religion and popular culture: the construction of certain artists or stars as re- ligious figures, and more specifically I will talk about one artist, Bob Dylan, as a case. I want to emphasize that I am not trying to discover whether Dylan is religious or not; nor am I trying to find out which religion he possibly adheres to.
