Enjoy! CYCLING IN STEWARTRY This booklet is one of a series of four covering the whole of Dumfries & Galloway that suggest a variety of cycle tours for visitors and locals of all abilities. Local cycling enthusiasts, using their knowledge of the quieter roads, cycle routes and byways, have researched the routes to provide an interesting and rewarding taste of the region. A note of distance, time, terrain and facilities is given at the start of each route. All start points offer parking, toilets, snack places and accommodation. Some routes include stretches off-tarmac and this is indicated at the start of the route. Parking discs are required for some car parks and these are available at Tourist Information Centres and in local shops. Stewartry is part of the old province of Galloway. In those centuries when the easiest way to travel any distance was by sea, it held a strategic place on the west coast, Irish and Isle of Man routes. This explains the many archaeological remains near the coast.

The Story of Caerlaverock National Nature Reserve (2nd edition) For further information about Caerlaverock National Nature Reserve please contact: Reserve manager Scottish Natural Heritage Greystone Park 55/57 Moffat Road Dumfries DG1 1NP Tel: 01387 272440 Email: [email protected] The Story of Caerlaverock National Nature Reserve Foreword Caerlaverock National Nature Reserve (NNR) stretches for 16 kilometres along the north coast of the Solway Firth in Dumfries and Galloway, south west Scotland. There are few places in Scotland like this – a dramatic landscape of mudflats, sandbanks and saltmarsh, which extend beyond the reserve, into the estuary and all the way to England. The reserve is home for tens of thousands of wintering barnacle geese; the entire Svalbard population of barnacle geese, currently approximately 38,0001 birds, return each year to the Solway Firth. Winter also attracts staggering numbers of other wildfowl and waders, such as oystercatcher, pintail and curlew who flock here to feed on the mudflats and roost on the merse (local name for saltmarsh). Summer is quieter, but it is now that one of the reserve’s most unusual inhabitants becomes active. In the shallow pools at the northern edge of the reserve, natterjack toads thrive at their most northerly location in the UK. The saltmarshes are also notable for their landforms, which reveal processes of coastal evolution on an emerging coastline. Caerlaverock is one of a suite of NNRs in Scotland. Scotland’s NNRs are special places for nature, where some of the finest examples of Scotland’s wildlife are managed. Every NNR is carefully managed both for nature and for people.

This site has survived due to sand-blow covering the site. Patrick Maxwell of Dargavel, grandson of John, is reputed to have been one of the Earl of Morton's personal supporters and was killed with him at the battle of Dryfe Sands in , although most of the Strathclyde Maxwell families claim the Patrick Maxwell who lost his life there. Historic Environment Scotland accepts no liability for any loss or damages arising from reliance on any inaccuracies within this additional information. The foundations of several further buildings can be seen across the site. A rich artefact assemblage suggests this was a vellum-working complex dating to the 7th to 8th centuries. It is tempting to speculate that it was structurally related to the short stub of wall preserved next to the north-eastern bastion and that both elements of walling formed part of a building, which pre-dated the bawn and was located to the north of the modern graveyard. The use of Latin script, the lanuage used and the appearance of a rare, early form of Christian symbolism, the Chi-Rho cross, shows that there was a highly literate Christian community at Kirkmadrine in the 6th century, likely to have been monastic in nature.

  • King Robert the Bruce
King Robert the Bruce By A. F. Murison KING ROBERT THE BRUCE CHAPTER I THE ANCESTRY OF BRUCE When Sir William Wallace, the sole apparent hope of Scottish independence, died at the foot of the gallows in Smithfield, and was torn limb from limb, it seemed that at last 'the accursed nation' would quietly submit to the English yoke. The spectacle of the bleaching bones of the heroic Patriot would, it was anticipated, overawe such of his countrymen as might yet cherish perverse aspirations after national freedom. It was a delusive anticipation. In fifteen years of arduous diplomacy and warfare, with an astounding expenditure of blood and treasure, Edward I. had crushed the leaders and crippled the resources of Scotland, but he had inadequately estimated the spirit of the nation. Only six months, and Scotland was again in arms. It is of the irony of fate that the very man destined to bring Edward's calculations to naught had been his most zealous officer in his last campaign, and had, in all probability, been present at the trial—it may be at the execution—of Wallace, silently consenting to his death. That man of destiny was Sir Robert de Brus, Lord of Annandale and Earl of Carrick. The Bruces came over with the Conqueror. The theory of a Norse origin in a follower of Rollo the Ganger, who established himself in the diocese of Coutances in Manche, Normandy, though not improbable, is but vaguely supported. The name is territorial; and the better opinion is inclined to connect it with Brix, between Cherbourg and Valognes.

Constable Ltd. Printers to the University of Edinburgh for the Scottish History Society 1960 Printed in Great Britain PREFACE This volume represents some ten years voluntary work undertaken for the National Register of Archives since that body was first formed. It has involved the examination, calendaring and indexing of all documents prior to the year 1600 of the following collections presently lodged in the Register House: Charters of the Earl of Galloway, Lochnaw (Agnew) Charters, Logan (McDowell) Charters, and Barnbarroch (Vaus) Charters; in addition to the following collections, still in private hands, Mochrum Park (Dunbar) Charters, Myrton (McCulloch) Charters, Monreith (Maxwell) Charters, the Craichlaw and Shennanton Papers, and the Cardoness and Kirkconnell Charters, as well as much unpublished material in the Scottish Record Office. I have to express my thanks to the owners and custodians for giving me the necessary access and facilities. In the presentation and editing of these documents I have received ready assistance from many quarters, but I would fail in my duty if I did not mention especially Mrs. A. I. Dunlop, LL.D., and Dr. Gordon Donaldson, who have ungrudgingly drawn on their wide experience as archivists, and Mr. Athol Murray, LL.B., of the Scottish Record Office, who has called my attention to documents and entries in the public records and even undertaken a search of the Registers of the Archbishops of York.
