715-686-2910 1 Our History Then... Nearly 300 years ago, shipwrecked When the mill closed in 1933, the French priests on the shores of Lake great “Lumber Baron” era came to Superior made their way down a river an end. Today the mill ponds are to an area they christened “Presque visible from the village and make up Isle,” or “Almost an Island,” because our flagship park: Pipke Park. of the vast stretches of lakes and rivers that dwarfed the land. In l955, the village name was changed once again. Reflecting the The advent of the logging era brought wisdom and farsightedness of early development in the early 1900’s. In French missionary priests, we finally 1905, Presque Isle was known as became... Fosterville, after one J.J. Foster who built and operated a large saw mill. “Presque Isle” – Almost an Island.

William S. Winegar bought the mill in A visit to the Heritage Society 1910 and the fledgling community Museum in downtown Presque Isle will was renamed “Winegar.” take you back to these simpler times.

2 www.presqueisle.com Our History Now… Pipke Park is a true Presque Isle gem. It is rich in history and wildlife, and boasts excellent year-round recreation. The park includes two ponds with a level walking trail; and the neighboring woods feature a 2.8 mile trail ideal for hiking and snowshoeing. In winter, the southern lake provides a warming hut and sledding hill, and a well-maintained ice rink to enjoy at your leisure - day or night! The lighted rink is freely available for visitors and you can host parties here, too - simply check with the town office. In the early 1900s, the Vilas County Lumber Co. was built on the edge of the ponds, utilizing the water as “hot ponds.” Exhaust steam from the mill kept the water thawed all winter. Logs were piled in and transported via the railway which made its way past the ponds and into town to a railway turntable. In 1933, the lumber mill closed. By 1950, a new vision emerged. The ponds were then used as rearing ponds for raising Walleye. The project proved highly successful, eventually developing into the largest walleye rearing operation in the State. By the 90’s, the State no longer had funding to continue, and the surrounding land was deeded back to the Town to later become Pipke Park.

The caches tell the story of the rich history of the area. As you search for these hid- den “treasures,” using your smartphone or GPS unit, you will learn about the people, places, and events that shaped the town. Some of the many interesting caches awaiting you include: • Big Bill Winegar (Sensenbrenner Park) – A tribute to William S. Winegar, who ran a successful logging company from 1910 through 1926. • The Moonshiners – Moonshiners from KY settled here and set up stills in the woods around town. At one time, you could knock on any door and get moonshine. Look for an “appropriately themed” container. • Bird City Hotel (wooded area across from Pipke park warming shed) – Unique cache placed to recognize the town of Presque isle designated as a Wisconsin “Bird City.” • Salute That Flag (grounds of American Legion Post 480) – After you find the cache, be sure to visit the Veteran’s Memorial, located just east of the legion building. • Shanty Boy Hill Cemetery – A tribute to all the brave, hardworking lumber- jacks who lived and died to make this area flourish in its infancy. Additional information can be found on the Geocaching.com website (search Presque isle, WI) Look for the 2nd Annual “Caching Up In Wisconsin’s Last Wilderness” event to be held the last weekend in June.

GEOCACHING: Did you know our town was Photo courtesy of Dave Franzen once named “Winegar”? We have combined technology with historical facts, introducing visitors to the treasure hunt known as “Geocaching”. This activity allows people to get outside and enjoy nature while utilizing e-devices. This spring, a series of geocaches will be placed throughout the township; highlighting some of the people, places, and events that helped shape our village, from the logging days of the 20’s, through the tourist boom of the 60’s, and beyond. Spanning 1300 acres of private land and public Northern Highlands State Forest recreation land, over 5 miles of purpose-built single track trails and terrain offer excellent opportunities for mountain biking and fat biking. A new chalet, instructional and social activities, and a top-notch trail system that caters to beginners and experienced riders make this a destina- tion not to be missed. Known as “Wisconsin’s Last Wilderness,” Presque Isle has few streetlights and quiet, spread-out homes and resorts, ideal for night sky viewing.
