Vasari asserted that Michelangelo created both tondos at about the same time as his lost bronze David and his St. Matthew. This posthumous Tondo Taddei is a precise 1:1 casting that is faithful to Michelangelo’s original. It is clear that the master left these two reliefs in a state of incompleteness. However, whether he intentionally preferred to leave them in a highly suggestive state, or whether his numerous engagements prevented him from carving them deeper and then finely polishing them, will forever remain unknown. We do know that he refused to work piecemeal in isolated areas; rather, he carefully followed his preparatory drawings and controlled his cutting layer by layer, from the first down to the second, and then third layers until the full composition emerged. In consideration of the exquisite finishing of the surface of the Pieta of the Vatican, the Madonna at Bruges, the Bacchus, the David, and the Moses, some scholars are inclined to believe that, with enough time at his disposal, he would have fully finished these tondos in greater detail. However, in the Tondo Taddei the roughness of the background serves to highlight the exquisitely modeled figures of the Madonna and the Christ Child as they emerge from the marble. To the left, the infant Saint John balances the composition but the lack of definition makes him appear to be emerging from a fog of stone, thus accentuating his role as a subordinate figure, as if half seen in a dream. M234 Renaissance Florence – Instructor Andrea Ciccarelli T, W, Th 11:10-1:15PM (Time of class may change according to museum/sites visit times. Time changes will be sent via email but also announced in class the day before). This course is designed to explore the main aspects of Renaissance civilization, with a major emphasis on the artistic developments, in Florence (1300’s – 1500’s). We will focus on: • The passage from Gothic Architecture to the new style that recovers ancient classical forms (gives birth again = renaissance) through Brunelleschi’s and Alberti’s ideas • The development of mural and table painting from Giotto to Masaccio, and henceforth to Fra Angelico, Ghirlandaio, Botticelli and Raphael • Sculpture, mostly on Ghiberti, Donatello and Michelangelo. We will study and discuss, of course, other great Renaissance artists, in particular, for architecture: Michelozzo; for sculpture: Desiderio da Settignano, Cellini and Giambologna; for painting: Filippo Lippi, Andrea del Castagno, Filippino Lippi, Bronzino and Pontormo. For pedagogical matters as well as for time constraints, during museum and church/sites visits we will focus solely or mostly on artists and works inserted in the syllabus. Students are encouraged to visit the entire museums or sites, naturally. Some lessons will be part discussion of the reading/ visual assignments and part visits; others will be mostly visits (but there will be time for discussion and questions during and after visits). Because of their artistic variety and their chronological span, some of the sites require more than one visit. Due to the nature of the course, mostly taught in place, the active and careful participation of the students is highly required.

5-Franceschini:JWCI 7/3/11 10:32 Page 137 THE NUDES IN LIMBO: MICHELANGELO’S DONI TONDO RECONSIDERED* Chiara Franceschini he round painting known as the Doni tondo (Fig. 1), now in the Uffizi Gallery, Tis the only existing panel painting completed by Michelangelo, whose authorship has never been questioned. There is also a general consensus that Michelangelo painted it for a friend, Agnolo Doni. The tondo is, nevertheless, controversial in many other respects. Michelangelo is thought to have painted it when he was in Florence in either 1504 or 1506,1 but the dates of both the commission and the execution of the work are, so far, undocumented. Furthermore, its iconography presents some decided novelties, namely the unusual pose of the Virgin and the even stranger presence of ﬁve nude ﬁgures in the background. These and other details have been subjected to many interpretations.2 The painting, however, still lacks an explanation which brings all its elements together and which is fully consistent with both its genre and its function. This article is based on the assumption that a closer investigation of the personal and devotional context in which the painting was produced, and of Doni family history, might shed new light on the making of the tondo, and perhaps also on its controversial date. Several scholars have indeed already insisted on both the private character and the devotional function of this work.3 Nevertheless, they have not really questioned the traditional reading of the painting, which (as we shall see) is not entirely consistent with the function of a painting of this kind—that is, a Marian tondo.

Evidence of cues that trigger attention’s psychological dispositions was searched through content analysis of image reproductions of ancient Greek sculpture and fine vase painting from the archaic to the Hellenistic period - ca. 7th -1st cent. BC. Through this analysis, it was possible to observe the presence of cues that trigger orientation to the work of art (i.e. amplification, contrast, emotional salience, simplification, symmetry), of a cue that triggers a disseminate attention to the parts of the work (i.e. distribution of elements) and of cues that activate selective attention to specific elements in the work of art (i.e. contrast of elements, salient color, central positioning of elements, composition regarding the flow of elements and significant objects). Results support the universality of those dispositions, probably connected with basic competencies that are hard-wired in the nervous system and in the cognitive processes.

Almost no references exist in ancient literature, and there are few archaeological remains besides the vases themselves. I examined the technical details of vase-painting “copies”–images of uncommon scenes on vases by painted different painters– and compared the steps in the painting process, (especially the preliminary sketches), to see if these could supply any information about workshop practices. The research revealed that there are differences in sketches executed by different painters, and that there were often obvious differences in the care exercised in the different steps of the painting process. When the different steps consistently exhibit different levels of skill in execution, this suggests that workshops were organized so that workers with few skills performed the tasks that demanded the least; more-skilled workers painted the less-important borders etc., and the most-advanced painted the figures. On a few vases the sketch lines were more skillfully executed than the paintings that overlay them. Further, in the case of the Marsyas Painter and the Painter of Athens 1472, more than one pair of vases with replicated rare scenes ii exists.
