[email protected] ThisarticleexaminesthecontentoftheDeVirtutibusHerbarum, an astro- logicalherbalmanualbyThessaloswhichdisplaysthehealingandmarvelous properties of plants that correspond by means of sympatheia with the twelvezodiacalsignsandthesevenplanets.*Inparticular,thearticleaims todemonstratetwoscholarlypoints:1)thedependenceofthetreatise uponalreadyformulatedrhizotomicandastrological‘encyclopedias’through acomparativeanalysisofsomeintertextualexamplesderivedfromvarious authoritativewritings;and2)thedepartureofthemanual’sprefacefrom thisexistingtraditioninordertohighlightitstextualauthenticity.
