‘Round and ‘round it goes and when it stops…well, when it stops the children climb down, leaving their steeds for others waiting their turn-turn- dizzying-turns. Carousels are one of life’s little pleasures. Go find your family photo album, and you’re likely to come across a snapshot of a smiling youngster, hands gripping the anchoring pole, astride a proud and perhaps galloping painted pony. If you don’t have a snapshot, then let your memory do the envision- ing. Let your inner ear remind you of the booming band organ, if you or yours were lucky enough to ride before taped music replaced the authentic sounds. The nice thing about carousels is that we can enjoy them as an amusement ride, then gradually grow

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the 1902 Dentzel Carousel is the jewel of Logansport’s Riverside Park. to admire them as we mature. Carousels are immune to the exhor- tation about “putting away childish things.” Collectors value the art and craftsmanship of a fine carousel horse. Preservationists understand the value of restoring the century-old treasures. The town of Logansport has rescued and restored a rare 1902 Dentzel carousel, made up of a menagerie of 42 hand-carved (stationary) animals that include giraffes, a tiger, a lion, deer, goats, and high-stepping horses. The vintage Dentzel, one of only 135 functioning antique carousels in the nation, was brought to Logansport from Fort Wayne in 1919. When its last owner died in 1969, the endangered amusement species sat idle until the local Jaycees raised funds to buy it. The non-profit Cass County Car- ousel organi- zation took over stewardship and in 1987 the Dentzel Car- ousel was given National His- toric Landmark status. Dentzel carousels began using electricity as a source in 1915. Every carousel has a lead horse, distinguished as the biggest and most decorative. Usually it is the horse directly behind the chariot, and it is often a military or war horse. Logansport’s lead horse is named “Princess Logan,” Bridget said, referring to the town’s namesake. The carousel operator uses the lead horse as his guide to the number of revolutions a ride makes before stopping. Usually five revolutions are completed in one minute. So, if Bridget’s estimate is correct, the Logansport carousel ride will complete 25 Grab the golden ring. Many people waved flags as the U.S. Naval Band played. The occasion for the gathering of nearly 500 people on Main Street in Westville Aug. 17 was the dedication ceremony of the New Durham Twp. Veterans' Memorial. More than 125 families, businesses and organizations had provided their time, talent and funds for the memorial designed to contain the names of each man and woman from the township who has served in the military. At the first chance, family members gathered around the memorial to find the names of their loved ones. Chief Ronda Carr, a naval officer at Great Lakes, looked for the name of her son, Sean, who is stationed at Nellis Air Force Base, Las Vegas, and her husband Gary, who had been in the Air Force. Harvey King, a veteran from the Vietnam War, agreed about the importance of the memorial. "I think the more memorials the better. It's about time that everyone be recognized," he said. Butch Benson, who also served in Vietnam, said, "I think it's a really great thing. Any of these are good to recognize veterans," he said. Joanne Elliott, the president of the Westville Historical Society, credited the work and dedication of community members to bringing about the memorial that cost about $12,000. "Because of you, this memorial was finished ahead of schedule and under budget," she said.

The first Boston terrier in Olivia’s life was “Benjamin,” who provided inspiration for her art collection as well as the restaurant, which was named “Old Dogs, New Tricks.” It was a vegetarian restaurant, since Olivia at that time was heavily into macrobiotics (dairy-free vegetarianism.) She studied at the Natural Gourmet Cooking School in New York, and then turned out specialty items based on grains, beans, polen- ta, silver noodles — but most popular were her vegetarian “Ben Burgers,” named after you-know-who. The dog days of summer are handled with aplomb by “Ruby,” whose private pool is located in Olivia’s Sheridan Beach garden.

Welcoming guests, Olivia stands at the entry to her New Orleans restaurant, “Old Dogs, New Tricks.” Prior to the New Orleans restaurant, Olivia lived in Chicago, designing sets and costumes for the “Godzilla Rainbow Troupe” at the Kingston Mines Theatre. This was the 1970s, and it was an exciting time for the young woman who had grown up in a small town in northern Alabama. Originally she had come to Chicago to work as a buyer in a women’s clothing store, but that ambition soon gave way to less-struc- tured activities. Olivia’s creative impulses, entrepreneurial spirit, southern roots and many friends all combined to lead her into the Bird Girl experience, which has thus far been her most successful venture. However, one loose end remains in this story, and that is how the Bird Girl, after being created in Lake Forest, ended up on the cover of a book written by a New York author, about a murder that took place in Savannah, Georgia. Olivia does not have the answer, but she did provide some clues. Olivia’s interest in historical artifacts dates back to her childhood collections of Indian dolls, wigwams, baskets, pottery Bird Girl Continued on Page 26 and other hand-made items. After Midnight in the Garden of Good And Evil hit the best-seller lists, tourists swarmed into Savannah and tramped over the graves, whereupon the statue was moved for safekeeping to the Telfair Museum. THE PLOT THICKENS. Although the book reads like a novel, author John Berendt assures us these events really happened, and in fact you can easily find the grave of Danny Hansford, the young murder victim, in Savannah. Several crucial scenes are set in cemeteries, starting with the “Eternal Party,” where the indomitable Miss Hardy holds forth on a memorial bench, pouring her martinis into silver goblets. This program was introduced to the community in 1984 through a grant from the Indiana Humanities Council. A massed planting of Golden Edger hosta fill the foreground of the patio garden. I countered with hosta, good old faithful hosta, that seem to want to grow and spread out wherever you plant them. . .and are almost dog proof. I found a variety called Golden Edger, a soft chartreuse green, that I think looks very sunny and cheerful behind the dark deadpan green of the yews. It also picks up the golden color of the large Sum and Substance hosta that edge the top of the pond. My new goldies are a much smaller heartshaped leaf and will not grow as tall as the big mama yellows at the pond. I call every supersize plant a “big mama” ever since I did a story on artist David Langley and the rhododendrons at his Long Beach home, big, sprawling plants that he brought from the East years ago and now threaten to take over the world. He calls his favorite white, “big mama” and when I talked with him at the Lakefront Art Fair last week, he assured me that “big mama” was still growing strong. August 29, 2002 Page 59

I also had a tip about Cannas on my rounds to purchase hosta. I bought three canna plants this year, the first time I’ve tried them. They are still in their original pots since I have moved them around the deck to back up my potted plants. They will winter over, I was told, if I put them in the basement (I don’t have one), or in a garage or storage shed (I do have one of those). Like tuberous begonias and caladium, they are a bulb that doesn’t do well in the ground over winter, but can be saved for use next year. I’ll try it and see. Bryan has cannas throughout his lush plantings, and I have a hunch that he knows the secret of win- tering them in the ground. If he does, I’ll pass it on. I’m also passing on a suggestion from the Beachside Garden Club. If the wild mustard plant invades your garden or any adjacent prairie or woodland, do the envi- ronment a favor and pull it out. (219) 879-6100 I found an interesting story about mustard plants All major credit cards accepted on the Internet by John Dominic Crossan, professor emeritus of religious studies at DePaul University, reprinted from Harper magazine. He explored the reference in the Bible that likened the kingdom of God to a grain of mustard seed. He cites Pliny the Elder who lived between 23 and 79 C.E. who wrote in his encyclopedia “Natural History” that once the extremely tiny mustard seed has been sown, it is scarcely possible to get a place free of it, as the seed germinates at once wherever it falls. John Crossan went on to say that the gospels, written for a peasant population, pick up this rampant tendency of the mustard seed to take over, often where it is not wanted, attracts birds to its fields, even though they might not be desired there by others, and even though you might want it in carefully controlled doses, it grows wildly out of control. His point is that the mustard seed of the Bible is not meant to signify something that is bad and must be destroyed, but that, like faith, it can start very small and end up taking over everything. If gardeners have anything, it’s faith.

There’s a welcome sign hanging just down the street on South Whittaker where L&M Framing is also advertising a sale. This little lilac trimmed cottage with its wrap-around porch and gingerbread always makes me smile. Not cutesy, not quaint, it just says small town with a flair. The inside fits the bill as well. You have to kind of hunt around for its treasures. . .like a line-up of silvery tin sprinkling cans almost hidden beneath a ruffled valance at the windows. Helen Moorman, framing manager, can show you some hidden treasures as well if you look closely at some of the framed prints. She specializes in custom- made mattings that pick up a theme in a picture and carry it out to the frame.

You can thank The Beacher’s own Tom Montgomery for theses musings about sharing a spectacular sunset over Lake Michigan with good friends on the Prairie Club’s beach in Harbert, Michigan. It all started innocently enough earlier that same day when the “Travels with Charley” news team — namely Natalie the wife/model/brochure-collector, and I the correspondent and erstwhile photographer — sashayed into The Beacher newsroom for our weekly salon with Madame Editor Sally Montgomery. Well, we had barely finished the preliminaries to our usual consideration of things great and small when Madame Editor handed me a fancy new camera and hinted darkly that her son Tom was of the continuing opinion that my photographs were continuing to appear as through a camera darkly. “Maybe this will help,” Madam Editor said. “And Advancing to the beach with the new Kodak Advantix C650 Zoom camera in hand. here’s the owner’s manual. Be sure and read it.” At a glance I saw I was in possession of a Kodak Advantix C650 Zoom Camera, and when Madame Editor was called away from her desk to greet an advertiser, I tried out the zoom on Beacher staffer Janet Baines and on Natalie. “I’m only practicing,” I assured them both. Natalie suggested I should follow Madame Editor’s suggestion and thoroughly read the owner’s manual before I actually shot a single photograph. “Then maybe your pictures won’t be so dark anymore.” I wanted to argue that my pictures had been dark because I had been using a low-end “point-and-shoot” that really was only capable of producing snapshots in brilliant sunlight, and I wanted to further argue that as an elder male of the species I was above and beyond trifling with mere instruction manuals. But then I got THE LOOK, and I knew there was A lone stroller at sunset. no sense in arguing my valid point. We took our leave of The Beacher leaving Madame Editor and staff to talk happily with the advertiser, and, in a rare moment of male humility, I allowed as how Natalie could drive home and I could sit in the passenger seat and actually read the owner’s manual for this gleaming new Kodak Advantix C650 Zoom Camera I held before me. Natalie thought that was an amazing breakthrough in our 25-year-old marriage, and I promptly flipped to the Spanish language section of the manual and began irritating my little bride with my pigeon Spanish. As she drove us off toward the state line, Natalie suggested I could just shut up and read the English language section “en silencio.” Which, amazing as it may seem, I did. oughly, and by the time we got back to what we refer to as the “Word and Bunny Ranch,” I had actually got- ten a heads-up on how to operate the new camera. I was so excited, in fact, that after dinner, I went forth with camera and instruction manual in hand and began shooting shots as soon as I got to the beach path. I know you’re not going to believe this, but the very first shot could and should have been of a spotted fawn who appeared quietly before me, but by the time I got to the proper page in the manual, the dear little deer was dearly departed into the plushy forest. But then I literally ran into Paul Anderson who was up from the Indianapolis area with his wife and son for the week, and he gave me some good solid advice as I took my first shots from the aptly named “Sunset Point.” And then it was down to the beach just before sunset for more shots of this and that, and who should I see before me but my old pal John Gunner The lake relaxes at sunset. Anyway, I snapped John before he knew what I was about, and then I went and asked the master how to master this new-fangled camera I had been handed earlier that same day. John had all kinds of patient, friendly, and helpful advice, and, in no time flat, I was actually selecting the flash and infinity-focus modes and zooming in and out on John and other subjects with something that approach actual mastery of the craft.
