G&P Group now has a staff force of over 300 and ranks fourth in the latest Directory of the I Association of Consulting Engineers Malaysia in terms of staff strength. This impressive growth of the Group over the last 15 years, chalking up an average annual growth of approximately 30% for most of the years, is most commendable considering the workforce of each of the top three engineering consultancy firms have remained stagnant at about 500 each over the last 30 years. Even the largest engineering consultancy firm in Malaysia which was 600 strong in the 80s is not very active with only a few staff now. I often receive praises and compliments from the industry when the topic of engineering consultancy services and G&P are discussed or mentioned. For this, I wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the directors and staff of the specialist firms in the Group for their dedication and commitment in implementing our four structured core values religiously (Structured QA/QC, Structured Training, Structured R&D/Knowledge Management System and Structured Sharing). The structured core values and the unique model of sharing dividends for directors and staff in the specialist firms within the Group is a sustainable model in which we call it a “zero-in zero-out” “Everyone has a little extra. system. Our commitment to the provision of better quality services with value-added engineering through structured R&D and our zero-in zero-out equity model will definitely move G&P Group further up in the list of top engineering consulting firms in Malaysia. Jamilus Hussein Chairman Words From the CEO CONTINUOUS LEARNING AND GROWING We are firm believers that learning is a never-ending process. In line with that, we have introduced structured training and sharing to improve the skills and knowledge of our staff. Our Group also adopts a Research and Development (R&D) culture as it plays a critical role in innovation of new systems and designs that are more efficient, economical and safe thus adding value to our Clients. We have won accolades as a direct result of intensive R&D, for example our innovative pile strip raft design for the Bandar Botanic, Klang project that saves time and money. Unlike conventional design consultancies, we are also heavily involved in forensic investigations. To quote Alexander Lowen, “No one is exempt from the rule that learning occurs through recognition of error.” By being involved in these investigations, we hone our technical competency in recognising and thus avoid the common pitfalls of flawed engineering designs. “Challenge the Norm- ZERO-IN ZERO-OUT SYSTEM Excel Through R&D and Innovation” To transform G&P into an institution, a system called the zero-in zero-out has been introduced. Our group is progressing well towards an employee owned company. Currently three specialist firms have moved towards this model and many more will follow suit in the near future. Abd Rahman, Sallehuddin Mohd Nor, Jumaat Abd Moen, Che Aniza Che Wel, Ahmad Raflis Che Omar, Lecturer, School of Business Management, Faculty of Business and Economics, National University of Malaysia ABSTRACT The presence of bigger retail outlets have brought new business opportunities and moved the retailing industry and Malaysian economy to greater heights. Since these bigger outlets affects the existing retailers, a study was undertaken to assess the potential impact of the proposed development of departmental stores on existing small business retailers in Bandar Bukit Tinggi, Selangor .The assessment was based primarily on the perceptions and expressed opinions of the sampled retailers in the catchments area of the proposed development of the departmental stores. The objectives of the study were to: 1) elaborate on the characteristics of the retailers in the catchments area and 2) assess the perceptions of the small retailers regarding their performance, future outlook, and actions needed amid the development of the departmental store. From the analysis, there would be short-term adverse impact on most retail outlets and the degree of the impact is determined by the type of retail business. The study also raised several recommendations for the existing small retailers to employ in order to stay competitive. INTRODUCTION The Malaysian economy is projected to grow by an average of 6% annually. This growth will be supported by domestic demand with strong private investment and consumption with the services sector is expected to sustain its growth momentum at 6.5% per year on average during the Ninth Malaysia Plan (9MP) period.

Apart from aesthetically unattractive because of its visibility, gross pollutants also contributes to degradation of river water quality and loss of aquatic habitat as it carries harmful pollutants such as oxygen demanding material, hydrocarbons and heavy metals. This study analyzed trend of gross pollutant generated from two urban residential areas located in Selangor, Malaysia. The median value of gross pollutant load obtained from the Amanah Apartment and Bandar Botanic are 347.41 kg/ha/year and 32.46 kg/ha/year, respectively. Relationship between gross pollutant wet load with rainfall depths was derived using regression equation. A significant trend of increasing gross pollutant wet load into drainage system with increasing rainfall depth was observed. The behavior of pollutant load is related to the one observed in Australia.
