The Jamaica Plain-based ensemble will present its introductory concert in the Gardner’s Tapestry Room on Saturday, December 5th as part of the museum’s annual Artful Holidays at the Gardner evening event in celebration of the season. In becoming part of the Gardner’s music program, A Far Cry joins other notable ensembles, including the Borromeo String Quartet, that have developed an ongoing residency relationship with the museum. “We are delighted to welcome A Far Cry to the Gardner Museum as our newest chamber orchestra in residence,” says Scott Nickrenz, the Gardner’s Curator of Music, who celebrates 20 years at the museum this season. “The group’s bold, eclectic programming reflects Isabella Gardner’s adventurous spirit, and their strong vision for what a musical ensemble can be—combined with their dynamic musicianship—will captivate Gardner audiences.” “Isabella Gardner was a devoted supporter of emerging local musicians and artists, and was committed to engaging the community at large with all of the arts,” says Anne Hawley, Norma Jean Calderwood Director of the Gardner Museum. -

Collections: A Journal for Museums and Archives Professionals Provenance Research in American Museums “A Former Director’s Perspective on Provenance Research and Unprovenanced Cultural Property”[1] Dr. Gary Vikan Former Director, the Walters Art Museum Provenance research for a fine arts museum is neither a luxury contingent on adequate staffing with appropriate training, nor is it one of those onerous tasks only to be undertaken when imposed and funded from without. Rather, provenance research is integral to the day-to-day work of any art museum committed to scholarship – a facet of the analysis of a work of art every bit as important to revealing its story as are its iconographic, stylistic, and technical analyses. Such research is especially important for the Walters Art Museum which, perhaps to a greater extent than any other comprehensive fine arts museum in the country, is the legacy of dealer- collector interaction, to the complete exclusion of works professionally excavated in archaeological context.[2] Researching and reconstructing the collection’s past has been central to the museum’s work since it was opened to the public in 1934. My first project at the Walters when I arrived in 1985 as Assistant Director for Curatorial Affairs and Curator of Medieval Art was to oversee the research and publication of a scholarly exhibition catalogue, Silver from Early Byzantium: The Kaper Koraon and Related Treasures (by Marlia Mundell Mango). Its focus was a treasure (the “Hama Treasure”) of unprovenanced Byzantine liturgical silver acquired by Henry Walters from Joseph Brummer in Paris in 1929 which was part of a larger hoard that almost certainly emerged from a clandestine dig near the town of Kurin in northern Syria in late 1908. -

Even with the new Comcast Tower topping out at 975 feet, overall office occupancy still climbed to 89%, as the expansion of existing firms and several new arrivals downtown pushed Class A rents up 14%. For the first time in 15 years, Center City increased its share of regional office space. Healthcare and educational institutions continued to attract students, patients and research dollars to downtown, while elementary schools experienced strong demand from the growing number of families in Center City with children. The Pennsylvania Convention Center expansion commenced and plans advanced for new hotels, as occupancy and room rates steadily climbed. On Independence Mall, the National Museum of American Jewish History started construction, while the Barnes Foundation retained designers for a new home on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Housing prices remained strong, rents steadily climbed and rental vacancy rates dropped to 4.6%, as new residents continued to flock to Center City. While the average condo sold for $428,596, 115 units sold in 2007 for more than $1 million, double the number in 2006. -

arts culture & economic prosperity in Greater Philadelphia Peggy Amsterdam, President Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance One of the most frequent requests to the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance is for the economic impact of the region’s cultural sector. It is with great pleasure, then, that we present Arts, Culture, and Economic Prosperity in Greater Philadelphia, the latest data available regarding the economic activity of our region’s nonprofit arts and cultural organizations and their audiences. This report is the result of collaboration among many partners, including Americans for the Arts, the Pennsylvania Cultural Data Project (PACDP), Metropolitan Philadelphia Indicators Project, and Drexel University’s Arts Administration Graduate Program. We thank the cultural organizations whose participation in the PACDP made this report possible, in particular those who allowed us to survey their audience members. We are also grateful to The Pew Charitable Trusts and the William Penn Foundation for their support of the Cultural Alliance, and to Tom Scannepieco and 1706 Rittenhouse Associates for supporting the design, printing, and distribution of this report. Touching the Void: The museological implications of theft on public art collections Jillian Seaton Ph.D. University of Edinburgh 2014 Abstract Of central importance to this thesis is the way security measures contradict the process through which museums have been seeking to divest themselves of theoretical hierarchies and value judgments in recent years. A context for investigation is established that considers how a perceptible increase in art theft, complicated by the escalating value of individual objects and the proliferation of museums as represented by a rise in attendance figures has produced a climate of vulnerability for arts collections around the world. In response, museums are installing unprecedented levels of security that are having a significant impact on established viewing conditions and redefining museum space. Further hindering this situation is the disparity between the fields of museology and museum security.
