    Emanuel Lasker 2nd classical world champ from 1894-1921 Emanuel Lasker, (born December 24, 1868, Berlinchen, Prussia [now Barlinek, Poland]— died January 11, 1941, New York, New York, U.S.), Emanuel Lasker was a German chess player, mathematician, and philosopher who was World Chess Champion for 27 years, from 1894 to 1921, the longest reign of any officially recognised World Chess Champion in history. Lasker, the son of a Jewish cantor, first left Prussia in 1889 and only five years later won the world chess championship from Wilhelm Steinitz. He went on to a series of stunning wins in tournaments at St. Petersburg, Nürnberg, London, and Paris before concentrating on his education. In 1902 he received his doctorate in mathematics from the University of Erlangen- Nürnberg, Germany. In 1904 Lasker resumed his chess career, publishing a magazine, Lasker’s Chess Magazine, for four years and winning against the top masters. He continued to play successfully through 1925, when he retired. He was forced out of retirement, however, after Nazi Germany confiscated his property in 1933. Fleeing first to England, then to the U.S.S.R., and finally to the U.S., he returned to tournament play, where he again competed at the highest levels, a rare achievement for his age. Lasker changed the nature of chess not in its strategy but in its economic base. He became the first chess master to demand high fees and thus paved the way to strengthening the financial status of professional chess players. He invented new endgame theories and then retired for some years to study philosophy and to teach and write.

    José Raúl Capablanca y Graupera 3rd classical world champ from 1921-1927 José Raúl Capablanca, y Graupera (19 November 1888 – 8 March 1942) nicknamed “The Human Chess Machine, was a Cuban chess player who was world chess champion from 1921 to 1927. A chess prodigy, he is considered by many as one of the greatest players of all time, widely renowned for his exceptional endgame skill and speed of play. His skill in rapid chess lent itself to simultaneous exhibitions. José Raúl Capablanca, the second surviving son of a Spanish army officer,[3] was born in Havana on November 19, 1888.[4] According to Capablanca, he learned to play chess at the age of four by watching his father play with friends, pointed out an illegal move by his father, and then beat his father.[5] Between November and December 1901, he beat Cuban champion Juan Corzo in a match on 17 November 1901, two days before his 13th birthday.[1][2] However, in April 1902 he came in fourth out of six in the National Championship, losing both his games with Corzo.[7] In 1905 Capablanca joined the Manhattan Chess Club, and was soon recognized as the club's strongest player.[4] He was particularly dominant in rapid chess, winning a tournament ahead of the reigning World Chess Champion, Emanuel Lasker, in 1906.[4] He represented Columbia on top board in intercollegiate team chess.[8] In 1908 he left the university to concentrate on chess.[4][6] His victory over Frank Marshall in a 1909 match earned him an invitation to the 1911 San Sebastian tournament, which he won ahead of players such as Akiba Rubinstein, Aron Nimzowitsch and Siegbert Tarrasch.

What is Chess? Chess is a two-player strategy board game played on a chessboard, a checkered gameboard with 64 squares arranged in an eight-by-eight grid. It is one of the world's most popular games, played by millions of people worldwide in homes, parks, clubs, online, by correspondence, and in tournaments. Each player begins the game with 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns. Each of the six piece types moves differently. The objective is to 'checkmate' the opponent's king by placing it under an inescapable threat of capture. To this end, a player's pieces are used to attack and capture the opponent's pieces, while supporting their own. In addition to checkmate, the game can be won by voluntary resignation by the opponent, which typically occurs when too much material is lost, or if checkmate appears unavoidable.     The Last Part of Lasker’s Legacy In his colorful report of our visit to Saint Louis (http://www.kwabc.org/index.php/17- latest-news-and-reports/172-sinquefield-cup-2014 ), and especially of the Sinquefield Cup Tournament Michael Negele announced a separate note from my pen on our activities in the World Chess Hall of Fame (WCHOF). To be honest, I have to start with a confession: we didn’t come at all to Saint Louis with the aim to attend the tournament. The tournament was so to speak a side effect, our goal was to go through the last remaining part of Emanuel Lasker’s legacy that until recently was inaccessible for researchers. Actually I would better say: the remainder of that last remaining part, and it is only this remainder that shortly before had been bought for the World Chess Hall of Fame. This requires an explanation. The history of Lasker’s legacy After Martha Lasker’s death in 1942 Emanuel Lasker’s rather extensive legacy, consisting of letters, photos, scrapbooks, manuscripts, typescripts, books, magazines and memorabilia, came ‘on the market’ during the next decades. Most of his and Martha’s heirs, all relatives of Martha (Martha and Emanuel had no children, but Martha and Emil Cohn had a daughter, Lotte Hirschberg), sold their parts of the legacy or donated them to public institutions, like the J.G. White Collection of the Cleveland Public Library. [Cleveland Finds I / ... Finds II / ... Finds III] As far as I know the chess antiquarians Albrecht Buschke and J.G. Kramer played an important role as intermediaries.
