Mariani, Director of Marketing and Communications Telephone: 860.231.5387 E-mail: [email protected] The Carol Autorino Center Presents: Magic Time: The “Business” of Jack Lemmon A Film Series Tribute WEST HARTFORD, CONN. - Throughout his career, award-winning actor Jack Lemmon was known for his ability to portray characters who resonated with his audiences. A program of three films explores Jack Lemmon’s portrayal of the American businessman and the themes that resound with our current economy. The films in this tribute are Save the Tiger (1973) rated R, The April Fools (1969) rated PG, and Glengarry Glen Ross (1992) rated R. Save the Tiger will be shown on Tuesday, February 14, 2012; The April Fools on Monday, February 27, 2012; and Glengarry Glen Ross on Monday, March 5, 2012. Lectures or panel discussions at 6:15 p.m. will precede each film. All films will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Bruyette Athenaeum’s Hoffman Auditorium. General Seating. The dates and order of the films have changed since originally announced. Tickets for each film are $15 for adults and $10 for senior citizens. The film series is part of the Bruyette Athenaeum Performing Arts Series, in cooperation with the Jack Lemmon family, the Theater department at Eastern Connecticut State University and the Film Studies department at Wesleyan University. Tuesday, February 14, 2012: Save the Tiger (1973) Struggling executive Harry Stoner (Jack Lemmon) cannot seem to catch a break in the current economy. To save his apparel company, he contemplates burning his warehouse for the insurance money. However, he tables this idea to have some fun, which will lighten his mood. Instead, one of his clients suffers a heart attack with a prostitute Stoner procured. Stoner cannot overcome his war memories, which results in a cycle of depression and sustained isolation. Famed film critic Rex Reed will provide an introduction to the film. Reed is an acclaimed writer and critic whose film reviews appear every week in the New York Observer. He was an arts critic for the New York Daily News and the film critic for the New York Post. He is a member of the New York Film Critics Circle and the National Society of Film Critics. His articles and essays on the arts have appeared in almost every national magazine and newspaper in the United States and Britain. For five years, he evaluated films in the nationally syndicated television show, "At the Movies." He acted in the films Myra Breckinridge, Inchon!, Superman, and the anti-war film The Rehearsal. He's written eight books about the movies, and his first novel, Personal Effects, sold 75,000 copies in its first printing. In 1993, Reed was inducted, along with fellow Louisianans James Carville and the legendary Supreme Court Judge John Minor Wisdom, into the Louisiana Hall of Fame. Monday, February 27, 2010: The April Fools (1969) Director Stuart Rosenberg’s romantic comedy, The April Fools, follows Howard Brubaker (Jack Lemmon) and Catherine (Catherine Deneuve) in their quests for love. Brubaker and Catherine are trapped in loveless marriages. Brubaker’s boss convinces him to woo other women, but unbeknownst to him, Brubaker charms his boss’ wife, Catherine. The couple decides to escape to Paris. As they are about to board the plane, Brubaker discovers Catherine is the boss’ wife. Actor Chris Lemmon, Jack Lemmon’s son, and Professor Ellen Brodie, of Eastern Connecticut State University, will provide commentary preceding the film. Monday, March 5, 2012: Glengarry Glen Ross (1992) Motivated by the threat of impending layoffs, four real-estate salesmen - Shelley “The Machine Levene,” Dave Moss, George Aaronow and Ricky Roma - vie to become the office’s top salesman. The film depicts the underhanded tactics the men use to get ahead at the expense of their unwitting clients. Starring Jack Lemmon, Al Pacino and Alec Baldwin, Glengarry Ross premiered at the Venice Film Festival, where Lemmon received the Volpi Cup for Best Actor. Professor Geoffrey Sheehan, of Housatonic Valley Community College, will provide an introduction to this humorous, award-winning work. # # # Saint Joseph College, founded in 1932 by the Sisters of Mercy to provide higher education opportunities for women, is a comprehensive institution serving women from diverse backgrounds and religious traditions.
