1 Homeopathy: Mere Placebo Or Great Medicine? Post-‐Debate Questions I
1 Homeopathy: Mere Placebo or Great Medicine? Post-Debate Questions I- Questions for André: A) Questions from Joe to André: 1-Homeopaths claim that even after a substance is dissolved in water or alcohol and diluted to such an extent that there is not a single molecule of the original solute left, the solution still retains some memory of the solute. But this solution is then impregnated into a sugar pill and the water is evaporated. What then is left behind? And how does whatever is left behind have anything to do with healing? A: Homeopaths are actually not making such a claim, but have instead been reporting a series of very important experimental observations that are, first, sick people are sensitive to remedies that can produce a similar state as their sickness;1 second, patients usually experience an initial aggravation when remedies are precisely prescribed to them according to this principle of similarity;2 third, to avoid this initial aggravation, Hahnemann did what any logical physician would do, he diminished the dose. At first, he used simple dilutions,3 and only many years later he began using serial succussed dilutions,4 a process he had previously used in chemistry5 and which had 1 Hahnemann reported this phenomenon in great detail and with many observations in 1796 in his Essay on a New Principle for Ascertaining the Curative Powers of Drugs. (In The Lesser Writings of Samuel Hahnemann. Collected and translated by R. E. Dudgeon. New York: William Radde, 1852: 249-303.) He confirmed this phenomenon during the 1799 scarlet fever epidemic in an article entitled On the Power of Small Doses of Medicine in General and of Belladonna in Particular. -

Early Beginnings in London Developments in the United States of America On 10th April 1844, the inaugural meeting took place of what was then called the ‘British Homoeopathic Society’ (BHS). Such was the impact of Hahnemann’s death upon his followers, This meeting was held in the residence of Dr Frederick colleagues and patients, that whilst Dr Quin was holding the Hervey Foster Quin in Arlington Street, Piccadilly, London, inaugural meeting of the BHS in the UK a similar meeting was with several notable doctors in attendance, including taking place inAmerica. Glory be to him the graunter of such secret wayes, Dominion, and Honour, both with Worship, and with Prayse. George Ripley O poison, which is not cured save by poison! St. Augustine Homoeopathy—as distinguished from allopathy—is a system of medical treatment through minute doses of substances which cause in healthy people the same symptoms as those produced by the disease in question. In contrast to “ordinary” medicine which aims at curing the outward symptoms, it aims at healing the disequilibriums in the “vital” structure which permit entrance of the disease in the first place. There is a freely confessed ignorance, with both practitioners and patients who have verified and experienced the efficacy of homoeopathic healing, as to exactly why or how it works. Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843) himself, the German founder of what has henceforth been termed the homoeopathic system of medicine, said: “It matters little what may be the scientific explanation of how it takes place; and I do not attach much importance to the attempts made to explain it” (Organon of Medicine, 5th & 6th Ed., New Delhi, n.d., Sec. 28). Harris L. Coulter, one of America’s foremost lay exponents of homoeopathy, uses the established term empirical medicine to describe the Hippocratic system of prognosis followed in homoeopathic practice; and indeed, Hahnemann developed his therapeutic knowledge of drugs through the experimental procedure of testing their properties by so-called “provings” on healthy persons. -

The Therapeutic Pocket Book Repertory
The Bönninghausen Repertory Therapeutic Pocketbook Method 1 Samuel Hahnemann 1813 Hahnemann achieves great success treating typhoid fever The year of 1813 was one of triumph for Hahnemann. The contagious typhus fever, the typhus of the camps, prevailed throughout the length of Germany. Hahnemann attended cases of this terrible disease with a success that silenced his critics, and proved the superiority of the new method and of the truth of his principle. From Bradford’s Life and Letters of Hahnemann 2 Constantine Hering Hering wrote many articles, monographs and books. It is in the sphere of drug provings, however, that Hering's effort shines at its best. It has been remarked by Nash and others that if Hering had done nothing else for medicine but the proving of the single drug Lachesis, the world would owe him an everlasting debt of gratitude. Dr. Hering proved 72 drugs, out of which the following are the most well known: Cantharis, Colchicum, Iodum, Mezereum, Sabadilla, Sabina, Psorinum, Nux moschata, Lachesis, Crotalus, Apis, Hydrophobinum, Phytolacca, Platina, Glonoin, Gelsemium, Kalmia, Ferrum- met, Fluoric acid, and Phosphoric acid. 1800 - 1880 3 Adolph Lippe Adolph Graf zur Lippe-Weissenfield was born May 11, 1812 near Goerlitz, in Prussia, and died on January 23, 1888 in Pennsylvania. In the fall of 1838 Lippe registered in the first and only homœopathic medical college in the world, the North American Academy of the Homœopathic Healing Art in Allentown, Pennsylvania, also known as the Allentown Academy. Afterward Lippe moved from Reading to Pottsville, PA in 1841 where he practiced with success and growing ability until 1844 when moving to Carlisle, PA. -
Sectarian Identity and the Aim of Integration: Attitudes of American Homeopaths Towards Smallpox Vaccination in the Late Nineteenth Century
Sectarian Identity and the Aim of Integration: Attitudes of American Homeopaths Towards Smallpox Vaccination in the Late Nineteenth Century Eberhard Wolff Introduction N THE HISTORIOGRAPHY OF MEDICINE, sectarian medical movements have I been analysed mostly from the perspective of a conflict with regular medicine. Homeopathy, in particular, has been regarded as a distinct medical world with a way of therapeutic thinking apart from orthodox medicine and of not being compatible with it.1 On the level of theory, this is largely correct as, especially, the efficiency of minimal doses cannot be accepted by regulars, and 'regular' doses cannot be accepted by homeopaths who take seriously the homeopathic principles. Thus, from this point of view, an integration of homeopathy with allopathy is, to some extent, a contradiction in terms. However, recently this perspective has been replaced partially by focusing on those issues which regular and sectarian physicians had in common.2 In fact, these boundaries between the factions were never so clear.. cut for on the level of homeopathy's everyday practice (or practical principles); transgression was normal. Nevertheless, these transgressions raise the 218 Culture, Knowledge, and Healing question of how thoroughly homeopaths kept to the concept to which they were devoted. An exploration and analysis of these transgressions can throw light on how homeopathic physicians perceived their identity as a group. This paper traces the identity of American homeopathic physicians in the late nineteenth century, but offers a different approach to that of Naomi Rogers by focusing on a single issue. The homeopathic, sectarian or distinctive identity of homeopathic physicians between sectarian segregation on the one hand and eclectic3 integration on the other is studied only as it is reflected in their judgement of smallpox vaccination. -
