His writings appear to reveal a fundamental belief in God, but in his day to day work he was humanistic in outlook and had great difficulty reconciling human suffering with the medicines available to him. His writings indicate how distressed he became when he perceived the damage that inappropriate treatment inflicted on vulnerable patients. His indignation was heightened by the knowledge that death and suffering caused by poor medical treatment, could be prevented, if medical practice was more self-critical and the knowledge base was more reliable. One of the few medical writers that Hahnemann had respect for, was the English Physician Thomas Sydenham. Sydenham had been working and writing around 140 years earlier, but had made a conscious decision to apply the scientific principles of Francis Bacon. The epistemology of clinical medicine relies heavily on observations of how ill patients respond to a treatment. Reliable conclusions can be drawn only when comparable cases are treated systematically, with preparations that are standardised. In addition the clinical observations require to be confirmed in comparable cases and compared to similar groups of individuals who are either treated differently, or left untreated. Sydenham provided ways of identifying and classifying illness into diagnostic groups and also conducted clinical trials. His most notable discovery concerned the use of Peruvian bark (quinine) in the early clinical stages of infection (epidemic haemorrhagic viral fevers, plague). By carefully recording the circumstances of each case, he was able to determine that the mortality was much higher in patients whose fever was suppressed with quinine in the first stages of the infection.

Adult onset nocturnal enuresis unassociated with daytime incon- tinence is uncommon and there is a paucity of information about its incidence, significance, evaluation and treatment. We present a retrospective evaluation of this condition based on a database review of more than 3,000 consecutive patients referred for the evaluation of lower urinary tract symptoms. Materials and Methods: A database of 3,277 consecutive patients was searched for adult onset nocturnal enuresis. Patients with daytime incontinence were excluded from study. Evaluation consisted of history, physical examination, American Urological Association symptom score, voiding diary, uroflowmetry, estimation of post-void residual urine, video urodynamics, cystos- copy and radiographic evaluation of the upper tract. Results: Of 3,277 patients 8 (0.02%) had adult onset nocturnal enuresis without daytime incontinence as a primary complaint. The root structure and the haustorial formation of 5 northern hemiparasites: Bartsia alpina, Castilleja lapponica, Pedicularis lapponica, Pedicularis sceptrum-carolinum, Rhinanthus minor subsp. groenlandicus (Oro- banchaceae) have been studied. The autotroph Scrophularia nodosa (Scrophulariaceae) has been chosen as a control. It is shown that the main preconditions providing the possibility of rapid haustorium development are the long life of the primary outermost tissue of the root – the rhizodermis that covers the entire length of both young and older roots, and constant readiness of this tissue to form special haustorial hairs, and also an unusual structure of exodermis, which in many details is similar to rhizodermis. The formation of haustorial hairs is one of the earliest structural events in haustorium development; the haustorial hairs are long, with a smooth surface. The division and elongation of cells in the outer tissues play a major role in the early stages of endophyte development. The parasitic form of life influence the inner structure of the vascular cylinder that appears as the reduction of phloem conductive elements and the ac- cumulation of large amounts of starch in the xylem.

Features related to peculiarities of the leaf, bracteole, alar pedicel and corolla were found to be important in sep- arating the taxa morphologically, but principal component analysis of all characters showed some anatomical characters (mean number of stomata, diameter of vascular bundle and scleranchymatic sheath) to be more important than morphological ones in explaining the variation between the examined taxa. Nelissen Department ofEcology andEcotoxicology, Free University, Amsterdam, and'Department ofPlant Ecology, State University of Groningen, Haren, The Netherlands SUMMARY The reproductive allocation of dry matter and mineral nutrients to flowers, capsules and seed was studiedin plants of Scrophularia nodosa grown in a factorial, three(irradiation) x three(soil fertility), scheme in an experimental garden and in an irradiationgradient (on a natural soil) in a glasshouse. In the irradiationgradient a marked trade-off between sexual reproduction and vegetative propagation was shown: more flowering and seed production at higher irradiation, exclusively rhizome production at the low irradiation. There was no convergence between carbon allocation and nutrient allocation. At decreasing irradiation, biomass production decreasedand concentrations of K, N, Na and P increased inall plant parts. In the factorialexperiment a reduction of the irradiationfrom full daylight to 8% of daylight decreased the biomass production and the shoot:root ratio, once more enhanced by decreasing soil fertility,and increased the leaf area ratio. The specific leaf weight was only affected by the irradiationlevel, except at high soil fertility. The dry weight of the rhizome showed an irradiation and soil fertility interaction.
