However, there is little information on other males outside the PROD24, such as those raised under a 30-month production cycle (PROD30) for higher profits. Therefore, we investigated PROD30 males for important carcass traits (carcass weight, eye muscle area, backfat thickness, and marbling score) using a reasonably large dataset to understand their genetic merit. To do so, we estimated the genetic parameters of traits using animal model. Our analysis revealed moderate to high heritability values for the studied traits. The marbling score was found to be highly heritable at 0.56. The genetic correlation between traits was mostly moderate to low, and the backfat thickness was poorly correlated with the marbling score. These results are consistent with many previous reports on PROD24. Our study suggests that PROD30 and PROD24 males might have somewhat similar genetic potential, as well as similar genetic backgrounds. Thus, it could be concluded that there is further scope for PROD30 males to improve Hanwoo males’ overall prediction accuracy, especially under a genomic selection program, together with PROD24 males. -

The birth weights of the BS-group calves were lower (P < 0.01) than those of the SS-group calves. During the first two months, the daily weight gain of the SS-group calves was greater (P < 0.05) than that of the BS-group calves. However, between the third and fourth months, the daily weight gain of the BS-group calves was greater (P > 0.05). During the first two months, the chest girth was smaller (P < 0.05) in the BS-group calves than in the SS-group calves, but was similar in both groups by the age of four months. -

Beef cattle production background I-1. Historical features influencing cattle production Besides pigs and ducks, Sus scrofa and Anas sp., no ancestral domesticated animals naturally inhabited Japan. Domestic animals, such as pigs, cattle and chickens were introduced in the late Jomon (~ B.C. 500) to Yayoi Eras (B.C. 500 – A.D. 300). A Chinese historical book (~ A.D. 250) described that there were no cattle, horses or sheep in Japan. Because no descriptions of pigs and chickens were found in the book, the possibility of their existence could not be denied. Several books written in the mid 7th century referred to cow’s milk. Engishiki (A.D. 927), written in the Heian Era, is a description of the milk product, “So”, surmised as condensed milk for medical purposes. A reference to a presentation of “So” to the government is made in this book. However, this habit was abolished at the beginning of the 12th century. The government banned the slaughtering of animals, cattle, horses, dogs, monkeys and chickens in A.D. 675. Cattle and horse slaughtering were abolished again in A.D. 742. This suggested that the people of this period ate meat. After the prohibitory edict, meat and milk became less common. -

Consumer responses were examined in an incomplete factorial design where Australian consumers evaluated 216 beef samples derived from 18 cattle killed in Australia and Korean consumers evaluated 216 samples from the same 18 cattle, plus 216 similar samples from 18 Korean cattle. Samples of the Mm. triceps brachii, longissimus dorsi and semimembranosus were cooked using grill and Korean barbeque methods. Each sample was sensory tested by 10 consumers, who scored it for tenderness, juiciness, like flavour, and overall liking. Consumers then graded each sample as either unsatisfactory (2 star), good every day (3 star), better than every day (4 star), or premium (5 star) quality. For those samples assessed by both Australian and Korean consumers, the Korean consumers graded a higher proportion of samples ‘unsatisfactory’ and a lower proportion of samples ‘premium’ grade product than Australian consumers. -

In this paper, genetic diversity of the population was estimated. The materials used were 68,781 animals born in 1955 to 1998 and their pedigree records traced back to the population in 1937 or before. To assess the diversity, three types of parameters were estimated. Founder genome equivalents (Nge) is the most comprehensive parameter, in which all the causes of the reduction of diversity are accounted for. Effective number of founders (Nef) explains the cause of reduced diversity due to unequal contributions of founders. Effective number of non-founders (Nenf) accounts for the diversity reduced by genetic drift accumulated over non-founders generations. Index of genetic diversity (GD) was estimated by GD=1-1/(2Nge). Nge decreased gradually from 26.9 in 1955 and reached 2.2 in 1998. Before 1970, Nenf showed larger values than Nef, but the order was reversed in the later years. Nenf in the recent years was close to Nge. The index GD showed a sharp decline after 1980 and reached 0.78 in 1998. The major cause of the reduced genetic diversity was considered to be the bottleneck effect due to the concentrated use of breeding animals originated from a few founders. -

Legendre polynomials based on age at previous calving, ranging from 18 to 120 months, were used as sub-models for random regression analysis. The estimated heritability for the calving interval was low and was similar between the models. The estimated genetic correlation between ages was always higher than >0.8. Spearman’s rank correlation of the estimated breeding values between the two models was ≥0.97 for cows with their own records and ≥0.94 for sires of these cows. Therefore, this study supports the validity of fitting a repeatability model to the records of the calving interval of Japanese Black cows for breeding value evaluation. Our results could contribute to determining strategies for selection and management of Japanese Black cattle. Abstract: We estimated genetic parameters for the calving interval of Japanese Black cows using a random regression model and a repeatability model. We analyzed 92,019 calving interval records of 36,178 cows. Pedigree data covered 390,263 individuals. Age of cow at previous calving for each record ranged from 18 to 120 months. We used up to the second-order Legendre polynomials based on age at previous calving as sub-models for random regression analysis, and assumed a constant error variance across ages. -
