Mongrel Media Presents Score: A Hockey Musical A Film by Michael McGowan (92min., Canada, 2010) Distribution Publicity Bonne Smith 1028 Queen Street West Star PR Toronto, Ontario, Canada, M6J 1H6 Tel: 416-488-4436 Tel: 416-516-9775 Fax: 416-516-0651 Fax: 416-488-8438 E-mail: [email protected] E-mail: [email protected] www.mongrelmedia.com High res stills may be downloaded from http://www.mongrelmedia.com/press.html 1 OVERVIEW Music icon Olivia Newton-John (whose career has spanned over four decades, from Grease in 1978 to TV’s Glee in 2010) stars in Michael McGowan’s Score: A Hockey Musical, a film that combines musical numbers with Canada’s national sport. The film – which tells the story of a teenage hockey phenom who goes from obscurity to overnight fame – also stars a slew of Canadian talent. Among those are singer/songwriter Marc Jordan (whose composing credits include Rod Stewart’s “Rhythm of My Heart” and Cher’s “Taxi Taxi”), newcomers Noah Reid and Allie MacDonald, along with cameos by music artists Nelly Furtado, Dave Bidini, Hawksley Workman and John McDermott, journalists George Stroumboulopoulos and Evan Solomon, sports anchor Steve Kouleas, hockey dad Walter Gretzky and hockey star Theo Fleury. Unlike other musicals, the story doesn’t stop just for the sake of a song. Instead, the lyrics (written by McGowan) drive the plot. There are 20 original songs, among them one called “Darryl vs. the Kid” by Barenaked Ladies, as well as “Hugs” by Olivia Newton-John, Amy Sky and Marc Jordan, and five songs on which Hawksley Workman contributed.

  • Black in Buffalo
Black in Buffalo Black in Buffalo The incomplete victory of a people moving forward yet losing ground BY HENRY LOUIS TAYLOR JR. http://wings.buffalo.edu/academic/department/apas/html/taylor-buffalo-2-25-96.html (1 of 8) [6/4/2008 9:36:58 AM] Black in Buffalo Buffalo is rushing toward the millennium. As we approach the year 2000 - speaking from the eyes of a black historian - I can see undeniable progress in Black Buffalo. That progress has come quickly, at least in the historical sense. In 1940 there were still only 18,000 African- Americans in Buffalo, just 3 percent of the population. Fifty years later, that number has exploded to more than 100,000 - 31 percent of the population. The clear and considerable progress since mid-century is the springboard on which today's achievements are built. In 1996, blacks are finding jobs and opportunities that their forbearers in 1900 would have never dreamed possible. Over the years, a small but highly talented and influential black middle class has emerged. This nascent group is composed of religious leaders, elected officials, university professors and administrators, entrepreneurs, doctors, lawyers, school administrators, principals and teachers, nurses, firefighters, police and skilled factory workers. Yet when I travel through Buffalo's East Side and its Lower West Side, I am reminded of the words of the Rev. Joseph Lowery, president of the southern Christian Leadership Conference, on the 25th anniversary of the March on Washington -- "It seems that everything has changed, and nothing has changed." For Black Buffalo, it appears, the old proverb applies: The harder we run, the farther we fall behind.

  • A Single Organization Controls Almost Everything You See, Hear, and Read in the Media and They've Been Handpicking Your Leaders for Decades
by Matt Agorist January 29, 2018 from TheFreeThoughtProject Website A single organization controls almost everything you see, hear, and read in the media and they've been handpicking your leaders for decades. It is no secret that over the last 4 decades, mainstream media has been consolidated from dozens of competing companies to only six. Hundreds of channels, websites, news outlets, newspapers, and magazines, making up ninety percent of all media is controlled by very few people, giving Americans the illusion of choice. While six companies controlling most everything the Western world consumes in regard to media may sound like a sinister arrangement, the Swiss Propaganda Research center (SPR) has just released information that is even worse. The research group was able to tie all these media companies to a single organization: the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). For those who may be unaware, the CFR is a primary member of the circle of Washington think-tanks promoting endless war. As former Army Major Todd Pierce describes, this group acts as "primary provocateurs" using, "'psychological suggestiveness' to create a false narrative of danger from some foreign entity with the objective being to create paranoia within the U.S. population that it is under imminent threat of attack or takeover." A senior member of the CFR and outspoken neocon warmonger, Robert Kagan has even publicly proclaimed that the U.S. should create an empire. The narrative created by CFR and its cohorts is picked up by their secondary communicators, also known the mainstream media, who push it on the populace with no analysis or questioning.
