Down The Stretch With LSU losing a good portion of the second half, the win by LSU at West Virginia was the ninth in 31 games in the Johnny Jones era that LSU has won when down with 10 minutes to play and just the sixth time in 30 games that LSU has come from behind to win when trailing with five minutes to play.

Second Half Shooting It’s been interesting but in all six LSU wins, the Tigers definitely had a better shooting eye in the second half than the first half (although the percentage as seen above wasn’t that great in the UMass win). In fact in two of LSU’s victories – against Weber State in the Paradise Jam and McNeese State -- LSU posted field goal percentages of 60-plus percent in the second half. Here’s the shooting percentage in the second half in LSU’s six wins:

Of course, it was then his drive 2013-14 1/11 -- South Carolina -- 5 down the lane to the goal that gave LSU the winning points with 7.4 seconds to play. Gray, a JC transfer, is averaging 4.9 assists a game and that is fourth in the SEC … He is averaging --- 12.0 points per game. He is at 37-of-78 from the field for 47.4 percent and now 8-of-17 from the arc for 47.1 percent. Jordan Mickey -- Gms 5 or more blocks (11) Of his 39 assists, 24 have come in the last four games. 2013-14 11/12 -- UMass -- 5 11/16 -- Northwestern State -- 6 Tim Quarterman Earns Solid Minutes, Paying Dividends 11/22 -- Southeastern -- 5 For the sophomore guard, the improvement in quality and aggressiveness of play has been a big 12/14 -- ULM -- 5 plus for the LSU team in the first eight games. 1/7 -- Tennessee -- 5 Last year in 33 games, Tim Quarterman averaged 12.3 minutes per game, shot just 26.4 percent 1/15 -- At Ole Miss -- 7 1/21 -- Missouri -- 5 FG percentage (28-106), was 10-48 from the arc (20.8), 17-31 from the line (54.8 percent) and averaged 1/28 -- Kentucky -- 5 2.5 points and 1.8 rebounds per game. 2/1 -- Arkansas -- 6 This year in just eight games (seven off the bench and a start against McNeese-11/29), 2/26 -- Texas A&M -- 5 Quarterman has averaged 30.9 minutes, has made 34-of-70 field goal attempts (48.6 percent), with 10 treys (10-26, 31.8%). He is averaging 11.9 points per game and 5.4 rebounds per contest. 2014-15 12/2 -- UMass -- 5 He has equaled last year’s three-point FG total, surpassed the overall field goal and points total in just eight games. In his last four games after posting a career high 21 at West Virginia (12/4), Quarterman has scored a combined 66 points, making 25-of-48 field goals with 27 rebounds and 12 assists. Quarterman for the season is 17-of-23 at the line, 73.9 percent, equaling the number of free throws he made in 33 games last year.

Rothstein On Quarterman Earlier this week, CBSSports.com’s John Rothstein said this about Quarterman: “LSU’s Tim Quarterman has improved as much as any player in college basketball from the end of last season until now. A year ago as a freshman, the wiry guard never really got into a rhythm for the Tigers … Now a year older and more mature, the 6-6 sophomore is confident and fully engaged … Another thing about Quarterman? He’s shooting the ball at a much higher clip than he did a season ago. Last year, the Georgia native shot just 26 percent from the field and 21 percent from 3-point range while he’s now shooting 49 percent from the field and 39 percent from long distance. If you haven’t seen him, think of a long guard in the mold of a Michael Carter-Williams or Evan Turner -- long and lanky but armed with big upside.”

Martin Working To Get To Line When Jarell Martin made eight free throws at West Virginia (12/4), it marked the third game this year, he has made at least eight free throws in a game this season … He was 9-12 in the game in the Virgin islands against Old Dominion (11/21) and then was 8-of-10 against McNeese State (11/29) and 8-of-11 against WVU (12/4) … For the year, Martin is 36-of-46 or 78.3 percent … Last year, in 32 games Martin was 62-of-90 or 68.9 percent.
