POLITECNICO DI TORINO Collegio di Ingegneria Gestionale Master of Science Degree in Engineering and Management Master of Science Thesis Analysis of the craft beer movement in Italy Supervisor Candidate Prof. Luigi Benfratello Tommaso Magrì Academic Year 2018/2019 2 Summary The purpose of this thesis is to describe the current state of the beer market in Italy with a qualitative and quantitative focus on craft breweries. Since it has been influencing the demand and setting new minimum quality levels, the Italian craft beer movement has become more important in recent years. The first chapter analyses the concept of beer: its origin and how it has evolved over the centuries, the raw materials of which it is composed and its production process. Furthermore, this chapter provides a brief description of the differences in the production process between industrial and craft beer. The second chapter begins with a general overview of the global beer market: some parameters (like market size, growth rates and trends) are provided. Furthermore, an in-depth analysis of three continents (and respective countries), where the largest amount of beer is produced, is carried out: Asia (China), America (USA) and Europe (United Kingdom), with an overview of their craft beer movements. The third chapter focuses on the Italian beer market. It begins with an analysis of the Italian legislation and continues with a snapshot view of the sector. The displayed data and numbers help the reader to understand the market situation: production and consumption, imports and exports, main competitors, distribution channels and suppliers are taken into consideration. The fourth chapter deals with an empirical analysis of a sample of brewing firms.

LOCAL BREWERY RENAISSANCE: A SOCIAL HISTORY OF SMALL BREWERIES IN THE OZARKS Missouri State University M.A. in History Final Research Project 2008 Jeremy L. George Dedications *This project is dedicated to my wife Aubra L. George who is ever enduring my seemingly senseless travels to breweries across America. She is always supportive, even when I tend to mention the word hops twenty times in a single conversation. *This research study is also dedicated to my son Dylan Alexander George. He embodies all that I could ever hope for in a human being. He is the joy of our lives. He is the hope for hops in this new generation. *A special thank you to all the brewers that gave up time in their brewing schedule to meet with me and give me the interviews needed to complete this project. Thank you for all you do for this craft brewing industry. You make our beer, and for that we are grateful. Thank you also to the brewpub and microbrewery owners and operators for making this renaissance of beer possible. Jeremy L. George 2245 E. The New Brew: The Reaction ofAmerica's Big Breweries to the Microbrew Revolution ofthe 1980s and 90s by John Patrick Melia A THESIS Presented to the Department of History and the Honor College ofthe University of Oregon in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor ofArts June 2007 An Abstract ofthe Thesis of John Patrick Melia for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the Department of History to be taken Jooe 2007 Title: The New Brew: The Reaction ofAmerica's Big Breweries to the Microbrew Revolution of the 1980s and 90s. Appro Dr. Daniel Potl¢ In the 1980s and 90s, the United States beer industry entered a period known as the Microbrew Revolution. During this period, a myriad of small breweries emerged to meet the new demand for specialty beers among American beer drinkers. Current literature generally judges America's biggest breweries (Anheuser-Busch, Miller and Coors) to have been failures in this market niche and downplays their activity in the specialty beer market. In fact, big breweries were quite active in the domestic specialty market. This paper analyzes the various international partnerships, domestic partnerships and new brands that the Big Three oodertook during the Microbrew Revolution in an attempt to profit from the American specialty beer market. While many ofthe big brewery's efforts in this emerging niche indeed flopped, the Big Three's strategies often proved to be quite profitable as well. This presence of so many successful specialty brands affiliated with big breweries challenges the popular conclusion that the Big Three were failures in the domestic specialty market during the Microbrew Revolution.

Although an exact date for the discovery of that first brew is not known, some historians believe it occurred 10,000 years or more ago in Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq), when a jar containing bread became soaked with water and the resulting “slop” began to ferment. Someone then most likely had the curiosity to sample the resulting liquid and found it not only tasty but that it imparted a slightly euphoric feeling akin to that experienced by drinking their fruit and honey wines. Whenever that first beer may have been sipped, Sumerian cuneiform tablets and Egyptian hieroglyphics dating back more than 5,000 years allude to beer’s production.
