CP ha rac- contato per primo il mondo della globalizzazione, disegnando i confini tra i disere- dati della connessione e del copyright e i nuovi feudatari della proprietà senza patria né luogo, del nuovo capitale onnipresente e invisibile. CP è stato un abile mimo del- l’ubiquità e della confusione, ha messo in scena combinandoli e rovesciandoli i frammenti delle culture e delle sottoculture tradizionali, ha innestato, stravolto, in- fettato e fecondato creando l’illusione di un mondo istantaneo dove ogni luogo è so- vrapponibile e perfettamente identico, replicabile all’infinito senza sforzo e senza piacere. La realtà dei romanzi cyberpunk non ha coordinate di spazio o di tempo, è un Ovunque dove le merci sono protagoniste e dove anche le prerogative più schiet- tamente umane – ricordi, sogni, emozioni, desideri, visioni – sono separabili, nor- malizzabili, vendibili. CP è ricercare e raccontare l’irriducibile e l’inafferrabile, anche se questo coincide spesso con il malessere, la malattia mentale, la sofferenza. CP è stato ed è una letteratura che nasce dall’attrito con la tecnologia e la scienza. Come la migliore FS, CP è narrativa sociale e politica, tanto segnata da que- sta vocazione da essersi almeno in parte trasfigurata in resistenza al mondo globale, pratica politica dei movimenti no-global e nuovo pensiero sulla realtà. In questo spazio pubblicato in rete compare una scelta di articoli e recensioni a suo tempo pubblicati su diversi numeri di LN - LibriNuovi nella rubrica «Nostra Signora degli Alieni». Forse il tono e il contenuto di alcuni di essi apparirà sfocato o datato, ma ci è parso utile pubblicarlo ugualmente, anche per tentare una ricogni- zione sul genere e sulle sue tracce in Italia che non fosse legato a pochi autori e a qualche singolo libro. Buona parte dei libri qui presentati, nella sana tradizione one shot della letteratura di genere, sono ormai reperibili unicamente in forma di usato. Fanno eccezione i 3 LN - LibriNuovi titoli delle edizioni ShaKe, alle quali va il grandissimo merito di aver tradotto e pub- blicato le opere di Pat Cadigan e di Neal Stephenson. Comunque il bello delle prefazioni è di essere brevi e significative. Se non posso es- sere certa della seconda qualità cercherò perlomeno di garantire la prima. Eppure TUTTO CIO’ è FS, perché bene o male si basa su un presupposto basila- re del genere, ovvero l’estrapolazione coerente degli effetti di una novità tecnologica, ossia un elemento inserito nella realtà nota che ne modifica la percezio- ne da parte dei soggetti che ne fanno parte e insieme trasforma profondamente il modo di autoconcepirsi e autoregolarsi di quella determinata società. La FS è sempre più - in poche parole - la letteratura del possibile e la sua appa- rente invasività è dovuta semplicemente al fatto che nel mondo in cui viviamo la Possibilità è divenuta regola prima (chissà se è possibile modificare il DNA dei gatti da compagnia in modo da renderli più intelligenti? Probabilmente sì. Chissà se è possibile inserire un chip nei circuiti cerebrali di qualcuno in modo da guidare completamente le sue scelte? Probabilmente non subito ma tra un po’ sì. Il controllo e la radicale modifica eterodiretta del comportamente umano che un tempo si attribuiva ai telepati, ai comunisti o agli extraterrestri perfidi e schiavisti (ricordate Terrore dalla settima luna di Robert Heinlein?) è diventato probabilità tec- nologica, spettro impossibile da esorcizzare. Si può presentare in forma di lusinga, di piacere casalingo, di svago ed è tema quotidiano di polemiche e di riflessioni tal- volta ben più che inquietanti. Basti pensare alle Reti planetarie, alla possibile commercializzazione della Real- tà Virtuale, agli sviluppi dell’ingegneria genetica, e soprattutto alla possibilità di un controllo monopolistico di strumenti di comunicazione e sviluppo tanto raffinati, o - 5 LN - LibriNuovi volendo - anche solo al controllo politico generabile dal possesso di TROPPE reti televisive, per cominciare a sospettare DI ESSERCI GIA’ DENTRO. Il PROBLEMA, in sostanza, è proprio quello della comunicazione, della mole in- commensurabile di informazioni, dati, progetti, articoli, riflessioni che transitano quotidianamente. L’epifenomeno, l’aspetto appariscente e inutile di questo, come di altri eventi epocali, sono gli inevitabili frivoli articolotti dei settimanali d’opinione, mentre la realtà al silicio e germanio sono i miliardi di therabyte di informazione che devono circolare, pena il ritardo e la paralisi della Produzione. É così che la Science-Fiction è penetrata nella vita, non solo nella VOSTRA di lettori di FS (che magari, almeno in parte eravate preparati) ma anche in quella di coloro che mai ne leggerebbero una riga. Eventi inquietanti e tutt’altro che teorici (cito alla rinfusa) come il progetto Genoma, l’Effetto Serra, l’ibridazione di DNA ete-

    SECOND NATURE:AMERICAN FICTION IN THE AGE OF CAPITALIST REALISM Matt Kavanagh, Department of English McGill University, Montreal March 2007 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Ph.D © Matt Kavanagh 2007 ii Abstract SECOND NATURE:AMERICAN FICTION IN THE AGE OF CAPITALIST REALISM During the 1990s the global triumph of capitalism has made it, paradoxically, all the more difficult to see. Not only is capitalism increasingly derealized (e.g. cyber- capital), its very ubiquity renders it unremarkable, to the point that it appears a neutral part of objective reality. This dissertation examines how American writers have responded to the ‘spectrality’ that results from the mediation of everyday experience through the market. I discuss formal strategies in the work of Bret Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, Don DeLillo, William Gibson and others to represent the unrepresentable: what Slavoj iek calls the impersonal and anonymous function of the global market mechanism. Chapter one provides a formalist reading of Ellis’s American Psycho, a novel whose claustrophobic narrative represents the world of late capitalism at the level of its concept (“This is not an exit”). Lacking any sense of a horizon, Patrick Bateman experiences the world as radically closed. Because he is incapable of recognizing an elsewhere, he cannot imagine an otherwise; demonstrating no awareness of antagonism, Patrick acts it out in increasingly brutal and frenetic outbursts of violence. Where American Psycho presents Patrick’s sadistic violence as a symptom, my second chapter suggests that Fight Club’s consensual beatings treat violence as a fetish.

Le premier titre est L'Ile au trésor ("The Sea Cook") de Robert Louis STEVENSON, roman d'aventures classique s'il en est, qui bénéficie ici d'une nouvelle traduction, intégrale, due à Geneviève PIROTTE, d'une présentation extrêmement soignée, et des superbes illustrations en quadrichromie de Newell Convers WYETH (1882-1945), reproduites d'après ses originaux pour l'édition Scribners à New York en 1911. Un magnifique travail de reconstitution, qui ne peut qu'inciter tout lecteur à un retour aux sources de sa passion littéraire et poussera le bibliophile à remplacer l'édition de sa bibliothèque par celle-ci. Un volume 18 X 23,5 cm de 274 pages pour une somme, finalement modique, de 580 FB. Il est à noter que paraîtra sous peu La Légende de la vallée somnifère de W.IRVING, titre qui devrait plus particulièrement allécher les amateurs de fantastique. Les mêmes éditions, rappelons-le, ont vu le roman Le Pic des ténèbres de Roger LELOUP (déjà renommé pour ses récits de SF en BD) couronné par le "Grand Prix de la SF française" (section jeunesse). [Blaylock and I sat in the lobby of the Austin Wyndham, taking a break from the antics of ArmadilloCon X, where I quickly plied him with some Bass Ale, his favorite brew. My intention: to make him feel at ease. I wasn't blind to the fact that he was wary of this interview, almost wary of people in general. This was the same man who inscribed my copy of Homunculus at ArmadilloCon last year with, "For Glen, who has just listened to my first-ever reading. I'm shaken by it, and can't think." This same timidity comes across in his writing, which makes it that much more honest. Rummaging in my backpack, I pull out back issues of Nova Express and hand them to him, then reach over to the middle of the table and turn the recorder on.] James P. Blaylock: Hmm. I'm sort of partial -- in magazines of this sort--I'm a little partial to non-fiction anyway. I don't know why this is. I really like SF Eye, for example, it's a very readable magazine. My least favorite was the fiction issue, just because their non-fiction has been so good and their interviews have been so good, that I wanted more and more and more of that. "Titus Alone" anticipated many of the tropes of steampunk. Titus Alone [1959] by Mervyn Peake The fourth work in Peake's Gormenghast series, following Titus Groan, Gormenghast, the novella Boy in Darkness and the partial novel Titus Awakes. The story follows Titus' journey in the world outside Gormenghast Castle, which he left at the end of the second book. Titus encounters numerous wondrous scientific advances and dazzling technologies.
