  • What's Behind a Marathon? Process Management in Sports Running
sustainability Article What’s Behind a Marathon? Process Management in Sports Running Events Aurora M. García-Vallejo 1,* , Alberto Albahari 2, Vicente Añó-Sanz 3 and Aurora Garrido-Moreno 2 1 Doctoral Program in Economics and Business, Department of Economics and Business Administration, Universidad de Málaga, 29016 Málaga, Spain 2 Department of Economics and Business Administration, Universidad de Málaga, 29016 Málaga, Spain; [email protected] (A.A.); [email protected] (A.G.-M.) 3 Department of Physical Education and Sports, Universitat de València, 46010 Valencia, Spain; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected] Received: 15 June 2020; Accepted: 23 July 2020; Published: 26 July 2020 Abstract: The repercussion of urban running competitions such as marathons is tremendous, and the planning of these races involves a large number of strategic decisions. For this reason, this study analyzes the processes of organizing large marathons in Spain. The aim is to propose a systematic and sustainable model of excellence for the organization of sports events based on process management. To design the model, we followed a qualitative methodology using information obtained in 18 semi-structured interviews. The interviewees were experts in charge of the five most significant marathons in Spain (Barcelona, Madrid, Malaga, Seville and Valencia). The final contribution of the study is the proposal of a process map developed by identifying the main areas of competence and tasks, the relationships among the areas, and the timeline of these relationships. The process map unifies the processes established based on the preceding information and classifies them as management, core and support processes.

  • Press Release
PRESS RELEASE AIU AND VALENCIA’S MARATHON AND HALF MARATHON IAAF GOLD LABEL ROAD RACES JOIN FORCES TO FURTHER STRENGTHEN THE INTEGRITY OF THE RACES 19 September 2019, Monaco: The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) and S. D. Correcaminos Valencia – the organisers of the famous Valencia Half Marathon and Valencia Marathon – have joined forces to put in place robust integrity measures around the 2019 edition of the two races in the Spanish city. In June 2019 the IAAF Council approved the introduction of a new anti-doping programme in 2020 to be overseen by the AIU which will focus on a large pool of professional road runners competing in IAAF Label Road Races. The new programme will be funded by contributions from IAAF Label Road Races, together with athletes and athlete representatives. S.D. Correcaminos Valencia, which has been one of the key advocates of the new anti-doping programme has decided not to wait until 2020 and moved to enhance the integrity of its 2019 events by signing a separate Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the AIU. Under the MoU for the Valencia Half Marathon and Valencia Marathon, the AIU will develop and execute a bespoke anti-doping programme ensuring that the elite runners in the fields are all properly subjected to intelligence-led testing tailored to their participation in these races. Both the Valencia events are IAAF Gold Label Road Races and among the leading races in the world over their respective distances. “I want to thank the organisers of the Valencia marathon for making this commitment to clean sport.

  • Urban Marathons; Rhythms, Places, Mobilities
URBAN MARATHONS This original social science text approaches marathon running as an everyday practice and a designed event, to draw upon and contribute to the literature on practice theory, urban events, rhythmanalysis and mobility. It bridges sport studies and discussions within sociol- ogy and geography about practice, movement and the city. Inspired by theoretical debates about embodied and multi-sensuous mobilities, social and material practices, and urban rhythms, this book explores the characteristics of marathon running as a bodily practice on the one hand and, on the other, marathon training grounds and events as unique places. This account takes marathon running seriously, using socio- logical and geographical theory to understand the practice in and of itself. Based on original empirical research and accessible to readers, taking them to training sessions in Copenhagen and to marathons in Tokyo, Kyoto, Berlin, Frankfurt, Valencia and Copenhagen, it draws out the globalised, codified and generic nature of marathon practices and design, yet also brings out the significant local differences. The book examines in ethnographic detail how marathon practices and places are produced by various materialities, cultural scripts, experts, runners and spectators, and practiced in embodied, multi-sensuous and ‘emplaced’ ways by ordinary runners. It develops a sociological practice approach to marathon running and geographical understanding of marathon places and rhythms. It demonstrates that marathon running is of broad interest because it calls for and allows lively and expressive ways of conducting and writing research and understanding the becoming of bodies, the intertwin- ing of biological and mechanical rhythms and the eventful potential of streets.
