  • North West Wales Itinerary: the Castles and Town Walls of Edward I
North west Wales itinerary: the castles and town walls of Edward I From 1276 Edward I, King of England, established a mighty set of castles and towns in north Wales as part of his military campaign to defeat the Welsh princes. Amongst the castles built by Edward I are Caernarfon, Conwy, Beaumaris and Harlech, which collectively hold World Heritage site status. The castles represent the best castle building skills in Western Europe at the time, which were built over a short timescale and on a hugely ambitious scale. With massive curtain walls and towers and powerful gatehouses, the ring of castles has a powerful presence in the landscape of Snowdonia and symbolises the huge effort by Edward I to dominate north Wales and fight against the Welsh resilience. Conwy Castle and Town Walls Each castle has individual stories to tell.... Conwy Castle was built by Master James of St George and is amongst the finest surviving medieval fortifications in Britain. It’s hard to believe that it was built at breakneck speed in four short building seasons between 1283 and 1287. Climb the towers and turrets and find out how the Welsh captured the castle in the 15th century from the English rule. To get the full picture, head for the battlements, where there are breathtaking views across mountains and sea. Harlech Castle Caernarfon Castle and Town Walls Harlech Castle’s battlements spring out of a near-vertical cliff-face. After all these years Caernarfon’s immense strength remains Edward’s tried and tested ‘walls within walls’ model was put together undimmed.

180 2. SUMMARY DESCRIPTIONS OF PASSAGE TOMBS IN COUNTY DONEGAL The sites in the Kilmonaster cemetery, c. 2.5km N of Castlefinn, are described first, followed by the more isolated sites in the county. Of the twelve cemetery sites described by Ó Nualláin (1968b), eight are included here in the order of the letters he assigned to them. One, Croaghan/Glensmoil (Site L), is included among the isolated sites in the county, and three are described in Appendix 1 (Nos. 42, 67 and 68). The isolated passage tombs in the county are arranged in alphabetical order. An asterisk preceding a townland name denotes some uncertainty about the classification. THE KILMONASTER CEMETERY Kilmonaster Middle (Site A). OS 70:14:6 (44.7 5.3). ‘Giant’s Graves’ (applies also to Site D) (1948–54). OD 100–200. H 273 976. This monument consists of a cruciform passage tomb standing close to the western edge of a large mound. The mound has been planted with trees, and its original perimeter is distorted by fences, but it appears to have been round in outline and c. 23m in diameter. It is now c. 1.5m high. A number of kerbstones can be identified, some of quartz. There are a large number of scattered quartz fragments on the surface of the mound. The surviving tomb structure is 7m in overall length, and it is aligned approximately W–E. Little now survives of the passage, which is entered from the W, but it was at least 3m long. The northern transept, at right angles to the inner end of the passage, is 1.1m long and narrows from 1.1m wide at the front to 0.9m at the back.

  • BRON Y FOEL ISAF, Dyffryn Ardudwy, Gwynedd, LL44 2ZH
NORTH WEST WALES DENDROCHRONOLOGY PROJECT DATING OLD WELSH HOUSES - MERIONETH BRON Y FOEL ISAF, Dyffryn Ardudwy, Gwynedd, LL44 2ZH HOUSE HISTORY April 2013 Peter Thompson Llwyndu Farmhouse Llanaber, Barmouth Gwynedd, LL42 1RR North Wales Dendro Dating Project: Bronyfoel house History 2013 Bron Y Foel History Introduction and summary Bron y Foel Isaf is located near the village of Dyffryn Ardudwy in the parish of Llanenddwyn, Gwynedd. It is centred at NGR SH 60262459. It is placed on the Statutory List of Buildings of Architectural or Historic Interest and listed Grade II*. It is located on the National Monument record of Wales PRN 28204. A recording of the buildings was made in December as part of the North-West Wales Dendrochronological Project (NWWWDP). The record formed part of an individual survey that was determined by dendrochronological sampling and analysis which established an initial construction phase of 1588-1614 with later adaptation. Bron y Foel Isaf originated as a substantial storeyed house with gable chimneys, consisting of 4 bays divided by three trusses. The outer trusses consisted of principal rafters with raking struts while the central truss is in the form of an A frame run round internal faces with mortises to accept a boarded partition. The ground floor was initially divided into stereotypical accommodation of hall, cross passage and service or store room. A basement sits below passage and service room. A remarkable latrine block exits from the service room and rises to two storeys and is placed to evacuate waste over a small stream. The latrine block is unique in this region of Wales and gives rise to the idea that the influence for its construction came from elsewhere and particularly the buildings at the St.
