The first meeting of the Regional Task Force for Research on Avian Influenza was convened 3-5 March 2008 in Bali, Indonesia. The Regional Task Force establishment of the Task Force followed recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Health Research (ACHR) in March 2007. It was attended by nine Task Force members. During the consultation, the Meeting on Avian Influenza regional AI situation was reviewed and an overview of selected research topics presented. The Task Force members discussed gaps in knowledge in the following areas: surveillance in clinical and community settings, clinical management, virology, socio-behavioral change, socioeconomic impact, the animal — human interface and vaccine development. Prioritization of specific research areas should also be undertaken at a country level according to the context.
