Chapter 4 The right-wing media enablers of anti-Islam propaganda Spreading anti-Muslim hate in America depends on a well-developed right-wing media echo chamber to amplify a few marginal voices. The think tank misinforma- tion experts and grassroots and religious-right organizations profiled in this report boast a symbiotic relationship with a loosely aligned, ideologically-akin group of right-wing blogs, magazines, radio stations, newspapers, and television news shows to spread their anti-Islam messages and myths. The media outlets, in turn, give members of this network the exposure needed to amplify their message, reach larger audiences, drive fundraising numbers, and grow their membership base. Some well-established conservative media outlets are a key part of this echo cham- ber, mixing coverage of alarmist threats posed by the mere existence of Muslims in America with other news stories. Chief among the media partners are the Fox News empire,1 the influential conservative magazine National Review and its website,2 a host of right-wing radio hosts, The Washington Times newspaper and website,3 and the Christian Broadcasting Network and website.4 They tout Frank Gaffney, David Yerushalmi, Daniel Pipes, Robert Spencer, Steven Emerson, and others as experts, and invite supposedly moderate Muslim and Arabs to endorse bigoted views. In so doing, these media organizations amplify harm- ful, anti-Muslim views to wide audiences. (See box on page 86) In this chapter we profile some of the right-wing media enablers, beginning with the websites, then hate radio, then the television outlets. When I began this project, I never imagined that I would interview anywhere near this many people, but now, almost five years later, I cannot imagine the project without the information gleaned from these invaluable interviews. Fox and his appearance in a campaign advertisement for a candidate in favor of stem cell research. As the co-founder of the Congressional Working Group on Parkinson's Disease, I took offense to your comments, and I sincerely hope that such uninformed statements about people suffering from Parkinson's will not be repeated on your show. I hope you will take this as an opportunity to learn more about Parkinson's Disease, its debilitating effects and the research being conducted to find a cure. To that end, I have enclosed a primer by the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke entitled Parkinson 's Disease: Challenges, Progress, and Promise. It is highly informative, and I hope you will take the time to read it. As you deliberate the stem cell research issue in the future, I hope you will consider that it represents serious hope for those afflicted by Parkinson's, as well as a number of other life- changing diseases. Jeff Striegle Jeff won a Formula Indy championship in 1986. After his racing career ended he wanted to stay connected to auto racing. He got behind the mic as the PA announcer at Berlin Raceway in his home state of Michigan where he worked for 6 years. From there Jeff submitted an audition tape to MRN and was asked to do a live audition during the 1996 Daytona 500 weekend. His first race as a Motor Racing Network turn announcer was for a NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series race at Texas Motor Speedway. Off the track Jeff is also involved with a racing based charity called Racing Awareness. Racing Awareness works with patients and families from the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital of West Michigan providing them a welcome diversion from the healthcare process utilizing the sport of auto racing. In 2019 Jeff is celebrating 23 years with the network and currently co-anchors our race play by play with Alex Hayden and Rusty Wallace.
